Hey all,
I’ve been lurking around here for awhile now off and on, and decided it was time to learn more about this fascinating system. So, I started making a little emulator using Rust, and I’ve been having a TON of fun doing so! π
Here’s what I’ve got so far. It’s currently source-only, and I have yet to implement some things (bit string op’s, fp exceptions, audio) and some games are a tad glitchy (enemies disappear in Vertical Force, invisible bullets in Space Invaders), but it’s going pretty well I think for how new it is.
Of course, I started this before knowing about Guy Perfect’s new emulator (and I don’t really know how that’s going), but hey, more can’t hurt, right? π I’m guessing in the next couple weeks I’ll continue to make good progress in terms of compatibility and performance. After that is a lot of polish to make it more end-user-friendly, but yeah. I’ll take that as it comes.
Additionally, I have a video streaming series where I livecode bits of different emulators and things, and I talked about this project in last Thursday’s stream (before implementing a lot more stuff since then). I’ll also be streaming more of the development this Thursday at 8pm CET, so feel free to join in on the fun if you’re interested.
So yeah, just thought I’d share. I don’t follow the forums here much (yet), but I also have to give you all props on this awesome site. It’s a fantastic collection of anything and everything VB-related, and it’s so heartwarming to see how much you guys clearly care about the preservation of this odd little system. I absolutely love browsing all of the different stuff you guys have up here; the disk images for the VUE debugger, the magazine scans, and the Sacred Tech Scroll in particular are some of my fav’s π
I finished up a coding demonstration for a prospective employer on Friday, and just sat down saying to myself, “it’s about time to get back to work on Virtual Boy stuff.” So I came here and saw this. Neato. (-:
We should talk. I’ve got a lot of refactoring to do what with the inclusion of a Java code base in the project, so it wouldn’t hurt to compare notes. You can find me on Skype at guy.perfect or on Discord at GuyPerfect#8467
@Guy Perfect: Are you on anything else, perhaps slack? I can probably find you on skype, but I’m not usually on there. Is IRC perhaps another option? π
I’ll be streaming again this evening at 20:00 CET where I’ll go over the latest updates and do some more livecoding for anyone who’s interested/curious: https://www.twitch.tv/ferrisstreamsstuff
Today’s stream is already on youtube π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-dm4z5fJ1U

It’s Discord or Skype for me. Anyone not on one of those has to avoid them on purpose. (-:
I’m not adverse to installing something, but it sounds like you’re already on Skype, so let’s go with that for now. You can use it through a web browser right here if you’re like me and don’t want to install the application.
Otherwise, it’s good, old-fashioned PVB message board, but I’d really like to have some real-time conversation on the topic when you have some time.
I actually forgot I had a discord account already! Sent you a request. I’m yupferris#1454. π
I’m happy to report that ferris and I will indeed be joining forces. The PVB emulator project will be on a public Github repository and gain the benefits of both our capabilities. I’ll have a formal announcement in the coming days.
