Virtual WarZone, a lovingly created homage to the classic Battlezone for the Nintendo Virtual Boy, is very close to going gold and is now up for preorder.

The game, funded by RetroOnyx and developed by the VUEngine team, is available as a $150 complete in box (CIB) version including a physical 32 MBit Virtual Boy cartridge, label, dust cover, protective sleeve and box set with manual. A digital copy of the game for HyperFlash32 and HyperBoy flash carts will also be provided with CIB purchases. There is also a cart only version that includes only the cart and dust cover available for $99. A ROM only version is said to be also available for HyperFlash32 and HyperBoy owners eventually for $40.

Virtual WarZone supports the Link Cable for versus play, as well as RetroOnyx’s Rumble Pack for an even more immersive experience. Battery backed SRAM is included to save high scores and gallery unlocks.

The complete CIB version is expected to ship around April 2023, while the cart only version may ship sooner. Assumingly, the ROM only version will as well.

That’s a very interesting release. Congrats on the works. Will place a pre-order this week for a CIB.

Well now that’s quite tempting, always did like battlezone so this seems like a good fit.

I did write to RetroOnyx (thru the contact form on his site) a few days ago,. I asked if he had considered offering a package deal for 2 Virtual WarZones, since it works with the link cable. I also mentioned that I want a CIB, but I’d be pretty disappointed if I ordered that and the cart-only shipped ahead of it. Thus far, no response, but I know he’s a one-man shop, and this is holiday time.

It doesn’t usually take more than a day or two to respond. Try emailing him or contacting him on the Virtual Boy Planet discord.

Is this still available to buy complete in box?

Is there any news on the release? I preordered a CIB but haven’t got an update ever since.

A small number have shipped out, otherwise I’m waiting for more box sets. Supposed to arrive this Friday but I’m guessing holidays will slow that. You can always reach out to me directly. It’s just chance someone mentioned that you posted a question here. Thanks.

Thx for the info!

Bump

Just to close the loop here, units are shipping out. Preorders are 50% shipped as of today.
Best to use the PlanetVB Discord for any updates coming from myself and projects I’m working on.
I don’t check here very often these days.

Has this game a singleplayer ending? So can you beat it with an ending screen or is it just chasing new highscores?

Ordered the cart only today. I am not into the CIB-thing. Looking forward receiving the game.
When starting my virtual boy collection in Dec ´23 I only bought “cheap” games, now with expanding my collection they get more and more expensive 😉 But I think it is worth. And nice seeing a new game for this great console!

I encountered a bug yesterday: when I died for the second time the game freezes showing the attached image.
I could not do anything anymore which was sad since I had a new highscore.
Just wanted to share this.

Is the ROM out for this yet? I won’t spring for a physical cart, but I’d love to buy a ROM.

Thanks abarth. I couldn’t see it on the site at first.

I have FlashBoy+, I take it I’d have to upgrade. Hmmm….

Thinking of buying a HyperBoy and the WZ ROM now.

Right, I’ve ordered the HyperBoy. I’ll buy the WZ ROM as soon as I get the cart.

Looking forward to trying the new 32MB games.

I wonder if Retroonyx also sells this ROM when you have a HF32 bought second hand somewhere else.

BTW, I bought my HyperBoy from StoneAgeGamer. They have them in stock at the moment, but only in black.
