During the last coding competition a new member going by the nickname Red Metal joined planetvb. He planned to submit a VB port of Snatcher, a game that I had never heard of. After 7 post he stopped writing updates. Almost exactly one year ago someone else posted that Red Metal had passed away.
That post choked me up quite a bit. I had never talked to him but from his post I could tell that he was a very nice person. I felt like I missed my chance to get to know him. I tried to express that in a post but somehow my words felt meaningless to me.
It sparked an idea though… I could create a Snatcher port in his memory. So I started learning about the game and all the different versions. After playing it for a bit I came to the conclusion that it’s too complex. But somehow I couldn’t let the idea go.
One year and something like 200-300 hours of work later I have a first demo done. You can play up to the point where you leave for Alton Plaza. The Jordan Computer, inventory and shooting games are fully working. I had to skip the save feature and the video phone for now. To my knowledge it is furthers a homebrew Snatcher port has ever gotten.
Here are some features:
– Dynamic dialog system with alternating answers
– Dynamic inventory (Select button) that reacts to people in the room
– Every image has been converted to 3D
– PCM music and sound effects
– In game Jordan computer fully working
– Shooting games fully ported
Special Thanks go to:
– Bigmak and Minestorm for testing.
– Horvat for sharing his PCM code. In the end I wrote my own but it sure helped allot.
– Benjamin Stevens for testing and helping out with the transcripts.
I’m well aware that there are some imperfections in the game. I will continue polishing what is there and extending it until the game is fully completed. Even if it takes till the 25th vb anniversary.
I hope this is something Red Metal would have enjoyed playing.
Happy 20th anniversary everyone.
Thunderstruck – I think it’s fair enough to discuss these things now, even if the game isn’t going the be finished any time soon.
Do you think you’ll design the game to fit on the flashboy in parts ? if not, it will have to have a physical release of some kind so people can actually play it on hardware. The music/graphics and feel of the game is some of the best on the virtual boy, but it will eventually end up being the largest virtual boy game.
Even if you split the game into 16 meg parts, people would have to have multiple flashboys or constantly be flashing different parts of the game.
I don’t know what the correct answer would be, but you’re the one working on the project and your opinion is the one that really matters. What do you think ? What would you like to see ?

That’s the plan. I don’t see the point in having a physical only release.

Not constantly, but once in a while, yeah.

If there is ever an physical release I would like to see a cheaper card only option. I would also like to see money being donated to charity.
i’ve never sat and played snatcher all the way through on the sega cd. is there much backtracking? as far as the FB goes, is the save overwritten with each new flash? i like the idea of giving to charity, that is a great idea.

I’ve never played it all the way through either, but unless you are extremely thorough during your first playthrough, some backtracking will be inevitable (didn’t take an item you realized you needed, forgot a piece of information given to you by someone that is necessary to advance, etc), but I never found the gameplay to be tedious at all.
Excellent idea giving to charity 🙂

The FB keeps the sram unless another game overwrites it. Snatcher usually allows you to backtrack allot but certain areas are not necessary to progress. I might have to cut some of those.
On a different note, there are 3 Easter eggs hidden in my demo. One is in the Jordan computer (because I forgot to remove it), one is a reference to the Japanese version and one is breaking the 4th wall. Did anyone happen to find one?

Couldn’t find any of them… Any hints? 🙂

A planetvb member can be found in the computer, one of the shooting sections leads to the 4th wall breaking and the reference to the Japanese version is hidden so well, it will never be found.
Looking up PVB members was the first thing that came to mind, but looks like I just did not look up the right names. Or, in, other words… I knew you’d do that. 😉
It’s amazing how much effort you put into this!
What is there looks great, would be amazing to get a small team working on this in spare time and maybe get a full playable version someday.
Thanks for your work and interest, and very cool you started in memory of the original maker.
Thunder, any update on this by chance? We could also play thru the English game and start screen grabbing and writing down dialogue.

I did start converting more of the game but did ran into several problems. I actually did not program my converter very clean so it is rather hard to understand what I did back then. I will have to rewrite most parts. Due to some health problems I wasn’t able to do much during the last 4-5 month. Right now I’m programming a 2-player game, which will hopefully not be as complex.
After that I will most likely go back to Snatcher. I will try to make the tools I’m using less bound to my development environment so someone can help drawing depth maps and stuff.

Hi thunder, I would feel happy to contribute some 3D conversion to this project 🙂

That’s cool. But as I said, it will take some time until I get back to it. However, I do have another game I’m working on for which I could need someone how is able to draw some nice looking items.
I wanna say WOW! I played thru this now that I got my Flash Boy Plus and holy smokes! This was amazing! This was actually the first thing I flashed onto my Flash Boy Plus. Loved it.
Now if only: Intro and moaaaar! 😀
Anyways, well done!

Unless someone comes up a good way to do bank switching and increase the amount of storage on a flashboy plus. Maybe FB++ with 32MB and flash menu and possible bankswitching thru some quirky means. Well feels like that’s not gonna happen 😛 Edit: Nvm, just saw the post below this one, hahaha 😛

Thanks man, appreciate it. Not sure how to split up things now that Kevin is making bigger carts. We will see.
Not really. I got caught up in other projects. Still planning to restart on day though.
I understand. It would be awesome…
