It’s a freaking Christmas miracle. On Dec. 26th I booted up my notebook and found a file called “Fishbone.[Merry.Christmas].vb” on my Desktop. So I went and checked the security tapes. You guys won’t believe it: A group of 6 Christmas-Elves showed up in my apartment and finished the game. I was pretty surprised at first but then deleted the file as I thought: “I don’t need help of a freaking Christmas-Elf”.
The next morning there was a new file called “Fishbone.[Not.cool.Bro].vb”. I checked the tapes again an the very same thing had happened. However, this time one of the Elves stared directly into the camera for half an hour after they were done. I thought to myself: “I’m afraid of no freaking Christmas-Elf” so I deleted the file again.
The next morning I found a file called “Fishbone.[Next.time.we.break.your.legs].vb”. Obviously I checked the tapes again. After the elves were finished one went over to my couch and took a monster dump directly onto it.
So, I decided to not delete the game this time and release it instead. As the elves reprogrammed the game from the scratch in Python I can’t make any changes to the game anymore, so please don’t ask for it.
Some cheats of the game:
– You can delete all highscores by pressing the left and right trigger during the Adjustment-Screen
– You can trigger the Credits-Screen early if you press left and right trigger during the Start-Screen
– You can deactivate the collision detection if you press up on both D-Pads during the Start-Screen
About the card release:
I can’t tell if the quality is high enough for a card release. However, I think it is as good as the Blox and Soviet Union games which are high quality games in my opinion. However, a card release will only happen if there is an interest. So if you want the game on a card just post it in this thread, this is not a pre-order though. Everything else will be figured out later.
OK, as I said: I can’t change the game anymore because of the Elves. Ask the Elves if you want changes. I will remove the Elf-Shit from my couch and play with my WiiU.
Happy New Year Everyone

Where’s the download for “Fishbone.[Next.time.we.break.your.legs].vb”? All I see is “Fishbone.Final.zip”!
🙂

I zipped the file so that it is smaller.
Wow thanks thunderstruck. I’m glad you changed your mind, sorry I mean the elves helped you change you mind.
Great work mate, now go take that well deserved break.
I loaded this onto my FlashBoy right away and began playing it. It is awesome! I think it is much better than the SU games. You gave a lot of attention to detail and the result is a high quality game. Ben’s graphics are very professional too. Bach’s music fits really nicely too, it’s much better than just sound effects.
I got to the end of Classic Fish with a score of 150. I love what you did with the credits. I still have to finish the other stages though.
I know you said you’re not going to change the game any more, but in case you change your mind and release updates, you should fix the background of Super Fish World (it jumps around a bit). A pause feature would be welcome too, unless it was omitted on purpose. And the score flickers when it is incremented, but that’s not so important.

I noticed that too. I’m not sure what causes this. I looks fine on the emulator. The Super Fish World is the most complexest one so I guess the amount of Sprites can’t be handled by the VB anymore. It would be a major effort to fix this that’s why I don’t do it.
There is no pause feature on purpose.

Bullshit! Here is a fixed version from the Elves. Some of the blocks still flicker but they say that’s a feature.

Hey, I am grumpy fish! 😀
I am glad the elves showed up, and they had a great idea with adding classic music, too. But did they forget to remove the “demo” label from the title screen?
It’s good to hear that the game is finish.
Awesome work thunder.

Yes, I would be very interested in getting this game on a card. You have definitely surpassed all of my expectations with this game, thunderstruck. The controls are solid, the graphics are very nice, the music rocks, the challenge is great, and the high scores add great replayability to this game. This game definitely gets a 10 out of 10 from me!
I’m assuming that Krisse will be adding this game to the high score section in the future. I’ll be ready for it!

Thank you, it was a hard piece of work and I’m happy I’m done with it. I learned allot of stuff during the development and think I could do a even better game now. I’m not sure what it is going to be though. There are so many genres missing that it is hard to choose one.
I would definitely buy this game. As Ben said this game is 10 out of 10, you should be very proud.
As for another game, I don’t know what you think about the driving/racing genre but I think the VB is missing this. Iv always liked the thought of a VB wave race.
Once again thanks for fishbones.
Irony [AHY-ruh-nee, AHY-er-] n. – Getting killed by the fish named after you.
Great work on the game, t.s.! It’s easily one of the top five homemade VB titles. The presentation is outstanding and the game-play, while a tad simple, is actually not bad. The public domain music was a nice touch 😉
It’s nice, it moves fast and has nice graphics. A greater variety of edible fish and enemies would be cool. But this is a definite thumbs up.
Some trivia:
– There are 16 different enemy types, 3 different victim types and of course the player fish in the game.
– Every stage consist of 51 unique screens which I created using a level editor that has been programmed from the scratch only for this game.
– Creating a single stage took me 1 and a half Superman movies (I ran out of Superman movies in the end)
– There are 5 different attack patterns.
– I tried to give every stage unique feel by choosing different sized enemies and different attack patterns.
– There are 8 different songs in the game. All have them have been converted from Midi files.
– There are 10 different screens in the game.
– I had to extend the engine to display text only for the credits screen
– The credits are utilizing the actual game-code to show off all of the enemies
– The stage-select-screen has been inspired by images of the Faceball stage-select-screen

Here’s some more trivia that I’m wondering about:
Is it possible to eat ALL edible fish that appear in each level?
Right now, I think it is only possible to eat 171 of the 172 edible fish in the Classic Fish level. There are two edible fish that get quickly covered up by larger fish that can eat you, and I’m not sure if the player can move fast enough to eat both edible fish before the larger fish cover them up. If that is true, then I can improve my current top score by 1. Otherwise, I will have to try to get the “perfect” score, which I believe should be 172, unless there are hidden or “secret” edible fish to find or secret ways to get more points, which I am currently unaware of.
As for level Phish Tahko, I believe that there are a total of 201 edible fish in the level, right? Nevertheless, I know that the 110th edible fish cannot be eaten, for it appears too low in the level for the player to be able to reach it. Thus, the best score one can get in this level should be 200, since I think I missed 2 other edible fish when I got my 198 score, and getting those 2 fish will be INCREDIBLY difficult.

I just counted them:
CLASSIC FISH: 172 Fish
SUPER FISH WORLD: 151 (76 x rip van fish + 75 x blurp)
REVENGE OF THE FISH: 200 Fish
PHISH TAHKO: 202 Fish
I added some of them as traps. It’s pretty impressive that you manage to collect so many of them. I actually tried to make sure that every victim is theoretically reachable. Seems like I missed one. Thanks for the hint, I fixed it. You should be able to reflash the game and still have your scores.
