I decided to take down my Virtual Boy off of my shelf and play a little Wario today only to discover the right lens has gone seemingly completely out of alignment or is glitching badly, I don’t know enough about the mechanism to really know. It was working absolutely perfectly last time I had it down a few months ago and this couldn’t have happened due to rough handling as I have babied it since I bought it. Can anyone tell me if what is happening, it kind of sounds like the glitchy display problem I have heard about but this is far more extreme then a few lines across the screen and everytime I’ve ever heard mention of it thats all that was ever mentioned. I am seeking any and all advice on how best to fix this problem if possible, this is the first issue I’ve ever had with my Virtual Boy and figured it was best to ask for advice before tearing it apart and attempting the oven method. I took a few photos through the right lens to show whats going on. Only the right lens is having an issue, the left lens is working flawlessly.

Definitely the normal cable problem.

Thats nice to know that its not something more serious. I was reading up on all the methods posted on this site to fix the probelm, its disheartening to know how difficult your permanent fix appears to be, especially since I have no where near the soldering experience nor equipment needed to do so. How long does the oven fix usually work for?

To my knowledge the soldering fix is permanent.

The easier fix, the “baking method”, may not be as permanent. Someone else more familiar with that method will have to chime in on that one.

Does anyone have any experience with this guys repair service? I just came across it and it so far sounds like my best bet since I lack the skills do do a permanent fix nor do I know anybody whom does. Can anyone attest to the quality of this guys repairs? http://www.johnnyphantom.me/Johnny_Phantom/Virtual_Boy_Repair.html

Only 2 folks offer the repair.

Johnny Phantom in the USA
TheForce81 in the Netherlands

I have never done personal business with either, but both folks seem to be nice VB fans. The only thing I can *attest* to is that shipping costs to Johnny Phantom will be much cheaper for you. 😛

Haha yeah it definitely will be, I’ve ordered enough things from all over the world to know how much more expensive shipping can be, ordered a book from the UK last year where the shipping was 2x the cost of the book. 😛 I fired off an email to Johnny Phantom, hopefully I hear back from him soon. 🙂

I’ve sent a couple emails to Johnny over the last few months with no response. He also hasn’t logged in to this site since September. He must too busy to do the work right now. It’s a shame, he’s missing out on some monies 😐

Damn thats a bummer Steve. :/ Hopefully he’ll find time to do both ours sooner then later. Or… I wonder what the shipping cost would be to send it to TheForce81 in the Netherlands, I’m guessing its a scary number.

Shipping to me from the USA shouldn’t be more than 10 bucks, had so many things shipped to me from the states. Even a complete VB was only 10 bucks in shipping costs. Though sending it back from me to you might be slightly more expensive, like 12-15 bucks. Accumulated it would be around 25 in total at most (if you just send the display units themselves in bubble wrap I guess you could send it over for 2 bucks) it still isn’t THAT expensive in my humble opinion 🙂

Hey TheForce81 I sent you a pm. 🙂

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead but I thought I should just post a final update. It took a long time due to shipping but my VB is finally back in working order and hopefully is for good now that both of its ribbon cables have been soldered onto the screens by TheForce81. I just want to say I highly highly highly recommend him for anyone looking for the same repair. Despite him being in the Netherlands shipping just the displays is really cheapHe went to great lengths to ensure I had 2 working screens. After they first arrived back to me after being repaired one of them must have been damaged from rough handling during shipping as it was still having issues so he had me send it back to him and he mailed me one of his own personal repaired displays that he knew was good so I wouldn’t have to wait forever. Shipping ended up taking crazy long due to the mail being well… the mail and it getting sent back to him after sitting around who knows where for a month. lol But in the end I got the display yesterday and just installed it and I am now pleased to say my VB is back in action.    Thanks again TheForce81!
