On 64DD.net, we are collecting 64DD serial numbers to get an idea of production quantities and stuff. Wouldn’t it be cool to have a listing like that here too? If you want to participate, post your serial number(s) and I’ll add it to the list.
Do you want to know how the checksum at the end of US serials is computed? See here.

Is the white box demo unit like the one pictured in this thread?http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=4678&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&type=&mode=0&start=150
Please do share pics of the VN90000057[5] unit.
Hey guys, im trying to load pics on here but im not sure what
im doing wrong. I hate to make myself look retarded but im
really not so tech savvy, please hang in there, ill get the
pictures up soon as i figure this out…thanks for your
patience.
Well here it is, next to a normal serial #.here are the differences i could find between them.
1) the barcode, letters and the numbers are bigger in size
2) the sticker itself is a bit more rounded on the corners
3) its hard to see in the pics but there is old sticker residue
In the corners not fully covered by the rounded sticker,
indicating there was once a different serial# at one point.
4) out of all my other vb units with ac adapters made in jpn
this one came with an ac adapter made in china with different
textured plastic.

Heres what the seller of the unit sent to me when questioned
about the serial

When you say you have an “AC Adapter” made in China, do you mean the adapter itself, which plugs into a wall outlet, or the tap which plugs into the VB controller? If it’s simply the adapter, then it would make sense since any Super Famicom adapter can work in a VB, but if it is a tap, that would be remarkable.
I just can’t imagine anybody hoaxing a serial number like this, especially given the history concerning how it was originally acquired and then sold again to you, and I don’t think the sticker residue would necessitate that another serial number was removed. It could just be that this one was put on a little sloppily, which one might expect to happen early on in a production run with the first units being made. One might also expect the style of the serial number and bar code to change very early on in a mass production run, too, after the first few units were made, which would explain the differently sized barcode, letters, and numbers. I have to conclude that you have the 57th Virtual Boy made in the VB mass production run, which makes the “9” very interesting, especially since this is the first unit I’ve ever seen that falls within the first 100 units mass produced. It makes me wonder if the first 100 units or so might have first numbers ranging from 1 to 9, and then after that, the rest all begin with 1 for a specific reason. What that reason might be, I can only speculate, but I wonder: if a total of 10 million VB units had been made, perhaps those other numbers from 2 to 9 would have started to appear on new units after each million mark had been reached.

Very interesting find. If the tap its self is different but an official Nintendo product then I would go along with this serial number being official. I doubt as well that it is a fake but possibly one that wore off or was unreadable so a shop owner might have made their own to scan for inventory? Only problem I see with that is why use an official-ish style serial number?.
Just had another thought. Has anyone ever sent in a console for repair directly to nintendo? Perhaps the service center relabled them after repairs were made? It would be interesting if thats the case and you open it up to find out its been soldered.
Interesting discussion. Just wanted to say that the Code39 barcode also checks out. It’s a mystery to everybody.

My SN# is VN900006102 purchased at a New Orleans area Sears in early 1997.
concerning the “ac adapter” i guess i could’ve been more
specific.out of all my vb units with official nintendo
ac adapters (not the taps) that say made in japan, this one
came with a official nintendo ac adapter that says made in
china that has a different texture of plastic than the ones
made in japan.pluss the part that plugs into the tap is a
darker grey than the ones made in japan . both different
adapters mention snes and virtual boy on the plastic.
i also forgot to mention that the sticker on that unit is
alot shinier than the rest.
WOW check out the post before this one.
its another vn9 unit

This just confuses me even more lol. So we know they cant be the first off the production line as they purchased it in 1997. I feel confident in this because the earliest units were for Nintendo employees as both of mine were Nintendo sales peoples systems that were used to demo to retail owners. More over, it would be hard even for the Virtual Boy to have its initial production systems to sit on the shelves for 2 years. This shoots down the idea that they were refurbished systems which after looking into it made a lot of sense because they do indeed do this. These systems really are a curiosity.

Is it the Performance Adapter?

I’m pretty sure that the last I checked mine, it said that it was made in China.

Do the letters, numbers, and bar code on your VN9 unit look bigger than the typical ones, like with VUEFinder’s VN9 unit, or do they look the same size and style as the common VN1 units?
Here is a picture of my Serial number, hopefully this will help solve the mystery. Sears during most of the 1990’s had moved the video games to the children’s section of the store away from the electronics. They were probably sitting on the systems for a while. I purchased this one and another for a friend for the clearance price of $20 each. They had at least 25 units stacked up on a floor display unit. I remember that I wanted one of the systems for several months, and I finally had the chance to get one for a great price.

One thing I just noticed, there is another sticker below the top one. I pulled off the bottom to reveal the true number VN103133575. It may have been a refurbished unit. Sears must have been forced shipped these systems to get rid of them. I threw my box away years ago, I now wonder what number was on the box.

Thanks for the info johnme, that explains alot especially coming
from the original purchaser of the unit. This system has boggled
my mind for quite some time and now i can give it a rest.
Just a quick question for all Japanese Virtual Boy owners out there. Should the serial number appear anywhere else in the package (e.g. box, manuals etc.) aside from the bottom of the VB itself?
I just saw a boxed VB for sale at an online store that shows the serial number on the bottom unit as well as on a sticker pasted on the last page of the instruction manual. Is that normal?
Just looked, yep, it looks like on the back of the manual they put a sticker with the serial number near the bottom right.
Above it there looks to be a stamp of the retailer who sold it (complete with phone number…hmmm..*picks up phone*)
There’s also a date written in pen, I’m assuming the date it was sold to the customer? I can’t imagine it would be the date the retailer purchased it. I think they filled mine in wrong, there’s a 7 in the spot for the year, and an 8 in the spot for the month, day is blank. I’m assuming it was supposed to be Aug 7th.
It looks like all this would have happened at the time of purchase. Customer buys unit, dealer opens box, stamps manual with their store info, writes in the date, and peels a sticker off the box/piece of paper inside box. All this would be for warranty purposes.
