Just visited the maker bot site which is a community of 3D printer models that can be downloaded and printed.

Below are a assortment of Nintendo printable projects or replacement parts and accessories.

This got me thinking about our good friend the virtual boy. I am curious if anyone might have access to a 3D scanner & if so would they be willing to scan the Virtual Boy visor plate. This would be a great addition to the 3D printing community and great for anyone that has access to a 3D printer. This might also open new doors for cartridge creation as well.

If any of you can get me a 3d scan of the plate in any of the following formats I will gladly convert and clean it up for submission. *.obj,*.stl(binary),*.max,*.3ds

This is a great idea, especially for things like the VB that were so thoroughly abandoned.

A new dust cap for games would probably go a loooong way around here, if they’re cheap enough to order.

I think I saw that minestorm was 3D printing the housing for the link cable, so he might have access to one…?

I have been wanting to do the visor housing, just finding time to measure and model it, one day I’ll get round to it, but if someone does scan one I’d like a copy too.

I get some stuff printed with Shapeways.com, I have VB cart cases & dust cap in my shop there.

I will point out my user name is Hedgetrimmer, the VUE(xpert) part is a title PlanetVB gives once you have posted a certain amount of times, you are VB Gamer.
Anyway it would be interesting to see how they turn out if you do get some made.

Sorry that was really dumb of me. I’m in the middle of changing it.

I may just be showing my ignorance here but if it’s $40.00 USD to get a part made at shapeways. Why don’t we make say 12+ of the dust covers connected loosely like they do when you buy a model. When we get the product disconnect them and sand down the rough edges ourselves? I may not understand the process but to me it makes more sense.

I imagine, as times goes by, that 3D printing will be the last savior of VB Enthusiasts who aren’t willing to sacrifice cartridges anymore, etc. Good on both of you guys for getting started around here. 🙂

The two models I really want to make for 3D printing are the visor plate, and possibly a tripod mount, so the Virtual Boy can be attached to a normal camera tripod.

The real accomplishment will be making the connector. Seeing as how I easily found pins that fit a cart (and made a “cart console plug” from scratch), it’s reasonable expect being able to come up with spring-loaded sockets capable of being inserted into a remade cart-socket-housing. And of course have provision for locking the sockets into each place….

Just wanted to chime in to thank you guys for the dust cover model. Got a 3D printer recently and I’m currently working on printing covers for the games that don’t have them. First one came out great so I’m pretty optimistic. 🙂

Don’t know if this is the right place to ask but is there anyone who has a 3d model of the actual shell of the Virtual Boy anywhere? Mine seems to have some (currently) superficial stress fractures that I don’t like…
