I never even realized this until today, so my apologies if this is old news to you all here on PVB.
I just picked up BlazBlue Continuum Shift II on 3DS today. The game has it’s share of probs (No online vs & …No Sleep mode?). Not my gripe, I read about these issues before making my purchase. Some people find the 3D backgrounds in this game to be a gimmick, but I say it looks better than no 3D. The big thing I noticed however is how smooth the game plays and looks with 3D turned off, and I’m not talking about the varying 3D depth-scaling pixelation on the console. I suppose this makes sense that a game would jump up in FPS with 3D disabled, it just never dawned on me before. I’ll mess with a few other games and see the results I get. I don’t feel that the 3DS is laggy with 3D on, so I figure most if not all games are at least getting a solid 30fps. I still think people may be able to get a competitive edge in online play on other 3DS games if they can get the substantial increase in FPS that I’m getting with BlazBlue when it’s switched over to 2D-mode/3D slider Off.
Opinions?
I tested the 4 games that I own, FPS issues noted below. I tested all moving fast, moving slow, standing still, having the camera rotate, and anything else I found relevant including different backgrounds.
Bust-A-Move Universe:
No difference at all. Zero FPS drop with 3D enabled. Pretty simple game, glad 3DS masters this one with ease.
Dead or Alive Dimensions:
Gameplay FPS seems pretty solid to me with 3D On, character sprites act normally, some backgrounds effects are more fluid at a *standstill* with 3D off (rivers/waterfalls/etc).
Street Fighter IV 3D Edition:
Gameplay seems pretty solid, no noticeable lag to character movement, backgrounds seem solid, however *all realtime* sequences seem to lag with 3D on.
BlazBlue Continuum Shift II:
Backgrounds lag heavily at all times, sprites lag during fast movement (Sprinting, jumping, etc). Turning 3D off completely makes this game virtually on par with the PSP version. I think this game was too rushed, and was maybe a PSP port with little 3DS planning.
I did read that for DOA its 60 fps in 2D and 30 fps in 3D, so you would get an advantage in 2d by having more cycles per second to get the combo presses inputted, not my thoughts just copying what i have read.
I don’t own DOA so don’t know how much of an advantage it would be.
I’ve not found many FPS problems, only Ridge Racer in certain parts does it lag when pressing nitro, but minimal really. I have started playing RR in 2D mostly now, i was finding as the races have got harder i end up twisting the 3DS in my hands at hectic times and get double images etc. I seem to do better in 2D, it is nicer looking in 3D and you get the ‘rushing’ sense better so for shear fun i re-race in 3D once completed and won etc. Wish they had implemented an online race option for RR, just have to hang til MK is out, DS MK online was mucho fun, Wii even better so I’m eager for 3DS MK.
Now if only i could watch some 3D trailers…… 😀
Maybe in a year or so, we’ll get more 3DS games that work more smoothly in 3D…

Things work fairly smooth now, I just think that Devs need to take more time optimizing. The 3DS is a fairly powerful little system, so I’m not especially worried. The game that gave me the most trouble, BlazBlue, was clearly just a rush job.
