On the Space Pinball thread. TheForce81 was talking about how when he got the rom, he was told not to tell anyone about it. He said there was good reason the game was not available for download.
This got me thinking, and it seems to me that the only reason the game wasn’t available for download, was so people like Jojobean could just resell the game to people.
Also I’m pretty convinced that theres a rom of Dragon Hopper somewhere. On some thread about two months ago, someone was talking about a proto of Dragon Hopper being on ebay around 2005. So that proto being sold years ago, before the days when ebay became like 50% resellers, and people that collect games for profit. The game probably went to someone who wanted it, and might have gotten it dumped. Theres no known Dragon Hopper rom, but yet theres a rom of Faceball, and Space Pinball.
If you take that those are much rarer protos compared to DH in consideration, then why wouldn’t there be a rom of it out there. E3 and Nintendo Power previewed the game, and there are probably are few protos that Intelligent Systems had while working on the game. What I’m trying to say is, there way more protos of DH compared to the others, but yet no rom anywhere. It just doesn’t add up to me.
For any people who have roms of unreleased games reading this. Why not just release the rom. The only bad I see coming from it would be no more resellers ripping people off. So with no more people getting ripped off, and all of the happy people that would be able to play the rom, a lot of good would come from it.
Iv been thinking the same thing. its out there somewhere and most likely more than one proto copy too.
Just been fliking through some of the content on this site and in the VB image section there a flyer that mentions a guy who won the players poll contest to NOA and got to play dragon hopper, lucky fella! I wanna play it!
So if you are the lucky owner reading this, please please release it!
Pretty please!

When a dump is released it severely devalues the original. Space Pinball is one of the worst cases of this because a lot of the carts that were around were not original prototypes. If someone listed a copy of Space Pinball on Ebay a month ago it would probably go for 10x what it would now.

Yeah thats true. But whats good about the rom being released publicly, is that nobody will ever get ripped off with one of those fake Space Pinball protos again.
I don’t think the buggy version was not put up for download to make money out of it. Krisse was in possession of the buggy ROM and didn’t want to give people crappy ROMs, when it was fixed he immediately released the good ROM which was huge!
Though, in retrospect, it would have been better to have released the buggy ROM with a BIG disclaimer which would have avoided people like Jojobean to sell the ROM and lie about it. But in no way do I blame Krisse for this of course! I shouldn’t have done the deal myself in the first place, I myself am responsible for that (just to be clear I do not blame anyone else but myself in the first place and Jojobean in the second place).

I don’t blame him either, it’s perfectly understandable why he didn’t want the rom to be released. I was talking more about Space Pinball and how jojobean was trying to sell it to people.
Ahh yes, “Bound High for money”. I was a victim (or beneficiary) of purchasing this rom (Not from Jojobean, was an ebay auction for a flashboy). The concept of selling roms is frowned upon, and buying them is a kneejerk reaction from otherwise desperate fans.
I see nothing wrong in owning a proto and not dumping it. It’s a financial failure to do so if you had a serious monetary investment in the purchase of a prototype cart. While I would love for Unicorns petting zoos and VB dumps to happen at the whim of the community, the people that own said Unicorns and VB Protos really need to look at their best interest and weigh out the options. I believe KR155E really played the unfinished BoundHigh rom with utmost decency with respect to the tight-nit community. It’s simply a case of someone having something nice, trying to share it with those that the owner feels secure with it while they figure out what to do, and then one knucklehead ruins it by betraying their supposed friends for financial gains.
If I had Dragon Hopper would I dump it? Sure thing, but solely for the fear of bit rot and to an extent I’d build my own dumper. While sharing with the community is the ideal result, I’m not going to spend in the upper 4k figures just to flush my investment down the drain.
What do you think an official prototype Dragon Hopper cart is worth TODAY before the rom is released. Now say that the rom was released, what do you think said cart would be worth now? Charity only goes so far.
The mindset of group donations makes sense towards the release of a rom or repro cart, but by no means does a legitimate proto owner have any obligation to dump or release such a serious investment without incentive.
While yes, the games listed in the OP have been dumped, they are exceptions because we know who owns them and/or who dumped them. With whomever purchased D-Hopper in 05, expect to pay them for a release, or wait for the collector in question to resell the cart so one of us can buy it and go from there.
While folks like myself are eager to buy protos, including dumped protos, the rest of the ebay market will not be so enthusiastic. JoJo selling KR155E’s BoundHigh is the basis of where the seed of doubt is planted. Even in my most generous state, it would break my heart to see a donation to the VB community sold for profit on the black market.
One of the things I think an owner of a currently unreleased “prototype” cart should keep in mind is the uncertainty of who else has a “prototype” cart or reproduction cart of the same game and what one of those other people might decide to do with such.
Let’s say one bought a “prototype” cart of an unreleased game. Let’s say one had to pay $3,000.00 for it. The first thing to consider is: how sure are you that what you have is actually a prototype cart in the first place? How do you know that the previous owner didn’t simply have a reproduction cart made that just looks very much like the prototype? Thus, you may own a $3,000.00 prototype cart, or you may simply own a $3,000.00 reproduction cart.
The second thing to consider is: what might others who own the currently unreleased prototype cart or reproduction cart of the same do with their product? If one of them decides to have the game released publicly, you will still be out your $3,000.00 and will still have your “prototype” cart which could possibly be a reproduction cart.
Now I can fully understand why a person who paid a large amount of money for a game won’t simply release it online for free. That would be a very generous and gracious gift indeed. However, if an owner of a prototype cart or reproduction cart, who paid a large amount to acquire such, decides to allow a fundraiser to occur for the release of the game, many good things can result for him or her:
Lots of people each pay an amount for the ROM to be released. Each one gets to decide how much simply playing the game is worth to him or her and pays that amount. Thus, nobody who participates in the fundraiser is ripped off because each one knows what he or she is getting and knows what it is worth to him or her. If the fundraiser reaches the target amount of what the owner of the proto/repro cart paid for the original game, the game is released, the owner is now no longer out the $3,000.00 or so and still has his either very rare prototype cart or else phoney prototype-reproduction cart. If the target amount is not reached, then obviously not enough people care about the game and the community doesn’t deserve to have the game, so the owner keeps the cart and game itself and the people who contributed to the fundraiser get refunded the money, assuming the person who collected the money was a trustworthy middleman. Now in the case of the ROM’s release, the other owners of proto/repro carts of the same game will still be out whatever money they paid and will always have the doubt as to whether or not what they have is genuine, but the one who allowed the fundraiser to occur is out no money, still has a special item, whatever it may be, and has the personal satisfaction of contributing a good part to an elite community. So each owner of such carts must decide: might another jump on this opportunity and/or would it be best for me to jump on this opportunity? Of course, the other danger is that someone else who has a ROM of the game in question might just let it leak for free, in which case everyone with the cart in question is out a lot of money, while the community that did nothing to deserve it is very happy indeed.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

Benjamin I think that’s the most astute case for dumping carts I ever saw. In the case of Space Pinball, i was dumped, but it was also kept quiet which I find quite odd. In some ways I’d prefer a rare cart owner to just keep the cart rather than dump a backup and share with a few sworn to secrecy.
Either way it’s a sore discussion because prototypes can go for such ridiculous amounts of money. I’m not sure quite where I stand, but I think all historic games should be at least backed up.
My personal peev is when I see folks on assembler or Digital Press trying to sell a protoype ROM for the same amount they bought the cart for, with no fundraiser option or preview as to what the cart is. To me, that’s the sign of a scammer.

Do I understand this right, someone was selling a FlashBoy with the BoundHigh ROM flashed on it ?

Unfortunately yes.
This happened around two years ago, and at the time a lot of people were getting scammed with the glitchy rom of Bound High. After someone got ripped off. A thread about the glitchy rom got started, and just to save people from getting ripped off eventully caused the roms public release. The links to both the thread about the FB with Bound High on ebay, and the other one that led to the glitchy roms release is below.

I agree with poeple not losing out on money, i woundnt want to spend 3k and release a ROM. But i would go down the fundrasier route to try and make somthing back on it even if it wasnt the full amount (but that me as a VB fan).
I just wish i was in a postion to buy these protos outright.
I dont want to see anyone out of pocket, but i personally dont want to go without these games. I hate the fault that they are only kept in a very tight circle but i respect these poeples wishes.
Just a thought, has anyone ever contacted nintendo explaining we are community of VB fans intrested in unreleased games. I know its a really long shot but even if we got a little something out of it, pictures/videos, its better than sweet FA.

That wouldn’t be a bad idea. But how would we even be able to contact Nintendo?

Good question, I was just sorta throwing the idea out there. I was hoping someone might know someone who knows someone. 🙂

Maybe someone does. It would also be cool if we could figure out a way to contact Intelligent Systems, or a former employee who worked there when the game was being finished. While Nintendo might give info or maybe a picture, it seems like Intelligent Systems would release a rom if either company were to. Because Nintendo has probably gotten no telling how many letters about putting unreleased games on virtual console with no results.
While you’re asking, see if they have any cart cases and connectors lying around. There’s got to be boxes of those in a warehouse somewhere.
I do have contacts at Nintendo, but not really NCL (Nintendo Japan), which is where you’d want to direct the question.
Having said that, I really wouldn’t expect them to release anything like that, especially for their ugly son…
Certainly no chance via the official way. What we need instead is current or ex-employees at Nintendo or first/second parties who have access to such stuff and are willing to sell it on the black market or simply leak it. I think I don’t have to mention the tons of luck which are a requirement. 😉
I’m not under any illusion they would release a game but I just think it would be great if we could get some in game shots and a video. If you don’t ask you don’t get.
