I was playing around with carbon fiber 3D printed cases in addition to the link cable work. The Onyx prints didn’t come out so well but the SLS HP PA12 prints are not bad. Still too expensive though at $24 per case.

The SLS prints also seem to mark up easily as well. Seems like the cart dust cover model here on PlanetVB may be too tight in dimensions. The SLS dust cover won’t go on the VB connector without pushing pretty hard. The cases are a bit tight as well. The plain case less so than the fully detailed one.

The plain covers print better than the fully detailed one with Nintendo writing on the back. The current models have the text too shallow for 3D prints. Virtual Boy shows up on the back using a 75um SLS print and an 100um FDM Onyx print but the smaller text at the bottom doesn’t show well with SLS and not at all with FDM Onyx.

I think the 3D models also have the screw depths too short or the screw on the back cover too deep as when you tighten the screws down they want to push through the front covers. You can see it in the pics of both the FDM Onyx and the SLS HP PA12 prints.

I’d like to try an SLA Formlabs Tough Resin print as well but they’re even more expensive than SLS. Seems like at this point donor carts are still the best option.

Wow, so is this a 100% donor free, fully functioning cart you are proposing, or did I forget a part that would still be from donors? Either way, if seems like the VB Grail is getting closer.

Look what we have here. Full Formlabs2 printer, wash kit, and cure system. 🙂

Ooo, that is pretty.

That’s a gorgeous setup

Dude yes! This is a resin printer right?
I’m very curious to see how a VB case looks like coming out of one of those pools. 🙂

My friend makes a lot a mini-figures with a resin printer and they always turn out looking like it came from a mold. 😮

Yes it’s a resin SLA machine. Same machine that printed the transparent blue. They have some new materials now and a color kit so I’m going to try to get a semi transparent red.

First Durable resin prints. There are some artifacts due to me not washing it well enough. The big deal here is they can be dyed. Red dye is on its way. The material is a bit flexible but could be used for cases. Material cost comes out to $7 per case.

Outstanding! Those look awesome. Hopefully donor carts will be a thing of the past after too long.

Looks very good

They look great Kevin. Out of interest have you found an alternative to using donor connectors yet?

I have two more materials coming that I think should work well for the connector. I’ll get to the 3D model in about 1 month after the programmer stuff wraps up. My main concern is the electrical pins. Haven’t found a suitable replacement yet.

Sounds like you got it under control. The connectors have always reminded me of harddrive IDE connectors but I’m guessing you have already looked into this.

I’m also debating DYI injection molding. Since I have access to the Formlabs 2, I can 3D print molds good for 50 to 100 parts. Injection molder desktop machine is $1800. This would enable $1 or $2 cases and similar priced connectors.

First dyed red batch going in for final cure. Semi-transparent dark red.

I think you should use some low grit 60 sandpaper to make it look smooth. The current look is very scratched looking because of the 3D printing.

Thanks for the tip. There is a very small amount of rigides but it’s fairly smooth. The dye makes it look worse than it is. It may look better after the final cure as well. I’ll know later tonight. SLA prints in general are pretty smooth.

I may try a fine grit finishing in the next batch.

I would definitely like my VB Cart Programmer in one of those awesome red cases. I think it fits nicely with your fancy mini VB shell.

I’ve been debating that very thing. 🙂

Looks crazy awesome man! Good work!

I’m not 3d printing expert, but how come you’re printing them at a slight angle requiring all those support structures?
Would it not work to print the case face down?

The Formlabs printers want things at an angle.
