Well, here’s another GIAD (game in a day) entry… on the way home from work today I decided on a game similar to Flappy Bird (I’ve always liked those kinda games on the TI calculator and Palm Pilot).

Anyway, I wanted to submit SOMETHING, so here’s Flappy Cheep Cheep… I think it turned out better than my last GIAD (which was pretty unplayable :-P). And I may be a bit biased, but I think it’s better than the actual Flappy Bird (it’s not ridiculously hard, and there’s actually some variety). πŸ˜‰

i’ve played a few good flappy bird clones over the past week. i just saw an “another world” themed version was just released, and was playing that tonight. it made me think about what the game might be like on the vb, and then i saw your entry.

cheers!

Hah. I hoped I could skip this trend. Now I need to try it.

Hahaha, that was my thoughts exactly. Guess I’ll be playing a version of it after work though =P

Made it to 13. Man that stuff is addictive.

I love the Mario world theme and yes its very addictive, I got to 16. Abit more practice I think.

$&^#% I can’t make it past 12. Apparently I suck at these types of games. Very cool game.

I can’t believe you made this in a day. It plays really well, and I have to admit, it is addicting. I like the multiple scrolling backgrounds with appropriate depth. It’s cool the see the original Super Mario scenery scrolling in 3D on our beloved system. Great job, man!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Heh, sorry… I might have made it more difficult than I needed to. I started it out pretty easy, but by the end of the night, I was easily making it into the 30s… so I decided to tighten it up a bit. I guess maybe I got kinda good at it while “play testing” (though yes, those downward moving pipes are the #1 killer of cheep cheeps for me πŸ˜‰ ). It definitely gets more exciting after 25 though. πŸ™‚

I did find it to be a bit easier to play on the real VB than an emu (larger screen size or something).

I never played the original, but I got most of the way through Jetpack Joyride on the PS3 (which is just a more complicated version of F-B). Your version is fun, but it has to be harder than the original.

Heh, no… here’s a pretty good copy of the original: http://flappybird.io/ . The pipes are close together (both vertically and horizontally), and the screen is oriented vertically, so you can’t really look ahead very far. The original is pretty ridiculously tough. πŸ˜›

This is a great little version! Also very impressive for just a days work!

Fun little port. Blown away that it was done in just 1 day. Great work!

dogp: your physics are great. the game is easier than the original and feels much more natural. i’m rather enjoying this one. do you have any plans to add any background music?

Thanks… yeah, I was trying to make this more playable than the original… though I didn’t want it to be too easy. Has anyone made it past 25 yet? That’s where it gets more exciting.

I’m still considering adding some BG music and sound effects… it shouldn’t take much to do, so it’d be nice to cleanly “wrap up” the game. I was going to put some in, but ended up spending the time on moving pipes and other playability stuff. I’m pretty terrible at making music (and most artsy kinda stuff), so I figured rushed sounds would turn out bad anyway. πŸ˜‰

I wanted to see if there is something at the end. It is very hypnotic to look at even without controlling something.

I couldn’t get farther than 11.

You know what would be a nice touch? Having Mario running away from you at the right side of the screen. It would be like those stages with the bridges where cheep cheeps fly out everywhere.

Well, after a few attempts, I made it to 25 exactly… I was just about ready to stare excitement in the face, but got a pipe in the face instead. πŸ™‚

I’ve actually never played the original Flappy Bird, but this version just has to be way better, since it has both Mario and VB awesomeness.

That’s a great idea… you could slowly start to catch up to him, and to finish a level, you have to crash into Mario to kill him (and maybe if you miss him, you’d have to try the level again, like when you miss the exhaust port in the Star Wars arcade game).
