I enjoy imagining how various game types could look and work like on the Virtual Boy and would be interested in learning what you guys are having in mind. What are you dreaming to see on Virtual Boy?
Let’s all go crazy in this thread and sketch our wildest game ideas in the form of writeups, mockup screenshots or whatever.
Hopefully homebrewers can draw some inspiration, maybe even team up with mockup artists to make their dream a reality. Who knows what can come out of sharing your ideas here! :vb:
VVVBBB
I am gonna make a start with a hommage to an existing game. “VVVBBB”, a VB version of Terry Cavanagh’s action platformer “VVVVVV”, where you invert gravity instead of jumping.
During the past months, I have been working with jorgeche on a new version of the VBJaEngine, which saw a complete rewrite and is now much more capable and accessible than before. When I finally got the hang of it and understood enough of how things work in the engine, it became clear to me that all of a sudden I was able create any game I wanted for the VB. The “if” was no longer that important, but rather the “what”.
This is one game I imagine could be done relatively easy.

I would love to see this game on the VB! I have it on every friggin system it came out on and I can’t get enough
What about a “Dragon Hopper-like” top-down version, where your character moves about on either a near or far plane, and can “fall” between the two? The near plane will have to be represented by some kind of “screen-door” pattern, to make it transparent, but I think it could work.

I’d be all for that! VVVVV is a great game and it would be awesome on the VB!
As for game ideas:
1. Wolfenstein 3D? The Super Nintendo can run it without the aid of an FX chip, so maybe possible?
2. Runnerpack’s idea!
3. Anything wireframe – I still think some sort of racer would be cool. I think DanB had a great idea with Zpace racers. It was like Zero Racers but it ditched the corridor idea for an open space idea, which I think makes more sense (room for more interesting track designs, take advantage of the black background).
I’m a sucker for the 8-bit style games so I would LOVE to see a version of Mutant Mudds on the VB. It makes great use of the 3D features on the 3DS and reminds me a lot of what they do in VB Wario Land with the background and foreground jumping
Here’s a link to the game if you aren’t familiar with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1IPNG7mTcw
Aside from that game, Shovel Knight has been a fantastic game with tons of replay value to me.
As far as a whole new game, I wouldn’t mind anything with Yoshi or Kirby lol I’m simple to please. 😛
I personally would love to see a port of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. I think there is a lot of potential for the 3d aspect such as elevated playing fields and simple things like the jumping on trampolines. Not to mention that the game itself is pure fun! 🙂
I would love to see a port or homage to Metroid Fusion or indeed Metroid Zero Mission. Something about the Red and Black seems really appropriate for a Metroid / Aliens / Terminator game.
Additionally, I think Cave Story could be a nice one to see – the BV can easily handle the game and the PSP port showed that the frame can be adjusted to widescreen and improves the formula.
While I think of it – there’s an unfinished VB mock-up on this guy’s unpublished WIPs – saw it on Pixel Joint:

Apologies for double post, couldn’t go back to edit the previous.

Nice, looks like GTA. Cut it out and attached it.

I always though Tempest would be great on VB. Maybe one day I will make it now that Greg’s lib is there.

We need three things. a) a platformer (bc I love them) b) a racer and c) a RPG game.
Those three would make me buy you all nice things, if I had the money.

Tempest 3000 would be the BEST, sorry double post, just saw this.
+1 for Tempest/T3K. I wonder if Jeff Minter would consider a VB side project…
i would still very much like to see doom 1 and 2 brought over to the virtual boy.
here is an example from doom2 m1e1

And I am gonna double Ben’s offer! 🙂 Or did you mean $16k, thunder?
Anyway, simplified to using pre-rendered backgrounds, Virtua Boy Cop™ doesn’t sound that hard to make. Hmm…

He lies 😛 it was 16 dollars and some bbq sauce.
I’ll double that offer, that two lots of bbq sauce, who can say no to that? BBQ SAUCE! Lol.

It would be like the game that was attempted on R-Zone but will actually play well.
