It has long been a desire of mine to translate into English a lot of the Japanese articles that have been written in magazines, etc. concerning games for the Virtual Boy that ended up never getting commercially released, since this is about the only access that we have to such games, unless their prototype cartridges happen to surface in the future and fall into the hands of one or ones who desire to dump the ROMs and release the games online for all to play. It looks like I will now have time in my life to work on such, and I hope to release all of my English translations on this thread. Now, it is important for the reader to understand that I myself do not know or speak Japanese, so I rely on the use of translation software programs such as Google Translate, SDL Free Translation, and BabelFish, as well as online Japanese-to-English dictionaries, such as Denshi Jisho – Online Japanese Dictionary. I do strongly believe that these programs allow me to create rather accurate English translations of Japanese text; nevertheless, there may still be errors on account of my lack of understanding of the Japanese language. As for the titles of certain Japanese games that never got released, I don’t know if there is any way to know what the “official” English titles would have been if they had ever gotten released in English. Nevertheless, I shall try my best to come up with what would have most likely been the English titles for these games, if they had gotten localized in North America. With that being said, the first article that I’ve translated into English appeared in the 367th issue of Famitsu Magazine, dated December 29, 1995, on page 243, and it was a write up for the unreleased game, whose title I have translated into English as “Doraemon and Nobita’s Heart-Pounding Ghostland.”

Cool. Well, I already started working on translations for the rest of that page, so I guess I will post my independent translation results here for comparison purposes and not finish doing the rest, since it seems that my translations are in agreement with his.
By the way… have you ever learned of what ITC stands for and, thus, know what game company it refers to?

●アスミックでは、とにかく撃って楽しめる3Dシューティングを出すとのこと。
●At Asmik, they are producing a 3-D shooting game, in which shooting can be enjoyed somehow.
●ヒューマンではファンタジーの世界を舞台としたアクションゲームを開発中。
●At Human, they are developing an action game that is set in a fantasy world.
●バップの『バーチャルダブル役満』は通信対戦可能なものになるらしい。
●Vap’s “Virtual Double Yakuman” is likely to be a game that allows link play.
[Ben’s Note: From this, it seems that the reason why “Virtual Double Yakuman” never got commercially released, though it was under development for such a long time, is clear. They obviously wanted it to be at least a 2-player game and were waiting on Nintendo to commercially release the link cable, which ended up never happening. This also explains why V-Tetris, though it was originally expected to be a launch title, ended up getting delayed, since BPS likely would have wanted it to support the link cable and ended up releasing it as a 1-player-only game once they realized that the link cable wasn’t going to get released any time soon. This also explains why Faceball never got released, since they certainly wanted it to support the link cable and didn’t simply want to release it as a 1-player-only game. It seems that Nintendo being slow / hesitant at mass producing the link cable could have caused several titles never to get commercially released before the plug was pulled on the Virtual Boy.]
●現在発売日未定となっているソフトに関しては、ほとんどのものが年内発売を目標としているとのこと。
●Concerning software for which the release date is not yet decided, most of the developers said that they’re aiming for releases by the end of the year.

Compile: Aside from foreign markets, we believe that both its performance and construction are not suitable for the Japanese market. Currently, we are not considering producing any software.
Sammy: We would have liked it to be completely portable in its design. Although we have the intention to produce software, further details are still to be determined.
Shogakukan Productions: We think that the technology and the pricing strategy are as expected. A problem is that the hardware’s characteristics might limit the software variations.
T&E Soft: We think that fun and excitement can now be pursued differently than with software in the past. We are currently developing a shooting game called “Red Alarm.”
Technōs Japan: We think that it is straining on the eyes. As a company, we have no plans to produce Virtual Boy software at the moment.
Tecmo: The game screen gives you the sensation of being in a mysterious, other world. It’s interesting. We feel, however, that its mounted appearance is a bit too far ahead of the times.
Toho: The ability of third parties to supply software and a variety of content are going to be key. As a company, we would like to release software that makes use of Godzilla by the end of the year.
Nihon Bussan: We are currently considering whether or not to produce software. If we decide to begin production, something with a 3-D maze sounds interesting.
Hudson: It can provide a 3-D world, which cannot be experienced with conventional video games. We have already started producing software.
Pony Canyon: We think that it’s one of those items that could be rather fun. If we want to produce something, an adventure game would be nice.
Masaya: Its main body is nice. Although we do not currently plan to enter the market, if we decide to begin production, something like “Tobidasu Aniki” (“Pop-Out! Big Brother”) might be good.
Yanoman: Although it would have been nice if it was a little smaller, we think that it provides fun and excitement that you absolutely cannot get with other hardware.

Some thoughts from Ben about the ads appearing in the back of CoroCoro Comic’s Pop-Out! Panic Bomber: Virtual Boy 3D Book:
In the 323rd issue of Famitsu Magazine, dated February 24, 1995, Toho Co., Ltd. said, in response to the manufacturer’s questionnaire that they received from Famitsu Magazine, that they were thinking about releasing a game for the Virtual Boy that would make use of Godzilla by the end of that year. This could explain why the 3-D ad for the movie “Godzilla VS Destoroyah” appears in this Virtual Boy-focused book made by CoroCoro Comic. Since “Godzilla VS Destoroyah” was publicly released by Toho on December 9, 1995, one possibility for what transpired is that Toho was waiting to see how much money they would make from the release of their movie, before deciding whether or not it would be a good idea to begin development on the Virtual Boy game that would incorporate Godzilla, which likely would have been based on this particular movie. Thus, since they would have already had plenty of time to see that the Virtual Boy was not doing well commercially by the time of the movie’s release, they would have decided not to begin production on the game at all. Nevertheless, at the time that this comic book was being made, Toho may have very well still had plans to produce the Virtual Boy game, which could be why this ad appears in this magazine, in order to get Virtual Boy fans thinking and excited about Godzilla.
(See previous post on this thread for Toho’s mention of the Virtual Boy game that would incorporate Godzilla)
As for speculation on the ad for the Racing Mini 4WD machines, there was a video game in development for the Nintendo 64 called “Tamiya Racing.” This game ended up never getting released, and very little, and seemingly nothing certain, is known about its origins. Could this ad in the Virtual Boy-focused comic book indicate that the developer who worked on Tamiya Racing for the Nintendo 64 originally wanted the game to be released for the Virtual Boy but then ended up moving the game over to another platform once it was determined that the Virtual Boy would be a commercial failure, as is known to have happened with other games that ended up never getting released for the Virtual Boy, such as in the case of Virtual Jockey?

I guess this does indeed count as a translation for an unreleased game, since the Japanese version of its North American counterpart, 3-D Tetris, never got its commercial release, though there were certainly plans to do so. Your duty is to protect the city along the gulf coast by shooting down missiles that come flying from the back of the screen. Enjoy an unprecedented sense of play with the double cursor system, where you control 2 cursors at the same time with both the left and right control pads. Before you clear all 9 stages, a super-huge battleship awaits you!

I finally managed to figure out that “長州 力” is what appears on the Player Select screen of New Japan Pro-Wrestling: Fierce Fighting Legends. This translates to “Riki Choshu.” Since the first image in the upper left of the screenshot appears larger than the rest, this means that this is the image that is being selected and that, therefore, shows the face of Riki Choshu. Hence, Riki Choshu is another New Japan Pro-Wrestler who would have appeared in the game.

3D画面でボールをぶつける!!
Bash a ball within a 3D screen!!
Compete in a versus ball-throwing battle with an opponent in a space enclosed by walls above and below and to the left and right. Try to bash a ball into an opponent, inflicting damage, by reflecting it off a wall or obstacle. Whoever inflicts more damage within the time limit is the winner. Reflecting off walls is the key to victory.
In the lower left screenshot:
うまくぶつけろ!!
Bash it well!!
▲天井も反射に使うことが可能。
▲Even the ceiling can be used for reflecting.
◄ステージが進むと敵も強い。

It’s Doraemon’s first appearance on the Virtual Boy, and this time, the setting is an amusement park at night. Doraemon’s great adventure unfolds as he has some fun in the deserted theme park, while taking on the ghosts of the night!

Though fundamentally a side-scrolling action game, it is also packed with Virtual Boy elements, such as attacks from the back of the screen. Also, you won’t want to miss the mini-games typical of an amusement park, such as a roller coaster and bungee jumping!
