Hello, everyone!

As the title says, I just got a Virtual Boy (for Christmas, of course). It wasn’t exactly a complete surprise; in my anticipation I’ve been browsing the website for the past couple of days. It makes me kind of sad because this system had (has for homebrew) so much potential.

Now… I guess a little bit about myself. I’m a college student (and factory worker in the summer) at the ripe age of twenty years old who loves retro video games. I began retrogaming/collecting in the middle of my ninth grade year. I didn’t like the direction gaming was going in being over-cinematic, too easy, and hardly a real game anymore and since I had always had my first system – the Sega Genesis – hooked up beside whatever I was into at the moment, I figured I had never removed my Genesis for a reason: old school is saturated in quality. So I grabbed a SNES and a year later the NES and it all snowballed from there. I now own over 750 games (340 of those being NES) and other old school gaming collectibles. I’m mainly active at NintendoAge.

As for the Virtual Boy, it garnered my interest this past summer. I had known about it before, but I never gave it much thought past the Angry Video Game Nerd’s videos about it. Considering part of the humor is how he exaggerates how “bad” something is, I figured the Virtual Boy couldn’t be all that bad. I read and read and it wasn’t long before I earnestly wanted one. And now I do!

I’ve already played it for about an hour and a half straight and I gotta say, it’s way better than people portray it. I’m convinced that many who bash the system only do so because of the bandwagon mentality. I feel completely fine! I love the system so much. Moreso than the 3DS… I actually like that it’s red and black, those are two of my three favorite colors. I like it’s quirky yet workable design, unique controller, and its history. It’s a very unique system that is very under-appreciated.

The games I currently own are: 3D Tetris, Golf, Mario Clash, Mario Tennis, Red Alarm and Teleroboxer. I expected to like Red Alarm and Teleroboxer, but I’m surprised as to how enjoyable Mario Clash and Mario Tennis are. Golf… not so much. I don’t like Golf though, so it’s not very surprising. I have mixed feelings about 3D Tetris. I’m probably going to go ahead and scoop up the rest of the North American releases before the end of January.

Virtual Boy does receive a whole lot of hate while 90% of it comes from people who never played it once. I recommend Japanese games also because they got a nice set of games.

Glad you’re enjoying the coolest video game system on the planet. I hope you decide to join the high score competition, especially for Red Alarm. Getting the high score on this site is pretty tough.

That doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I also feel that many who have played it did not adjust the settings to fit their needs, resulting in poor performance and a headache. I truly believe it.

What are the high points for the Japanese games? Right now NTSC is my priority, but I’m not narrow minded. 😉

For one Japan has a cheaper copy of Jack Bros, their boxed copy is 1/3 the price of our cart only copy.

But they also got Space Squash, VTetris, and Virtual Fishing.
There are other games too but I didn’t list then because they are way to expensive, and are better suited to be played on the FlashBoy+ (a virtualboy flash cartridge).

If you are looking for a really good game you might consider buying a reproduction of the unreleased game Bound High at: http://www.uncletusk.com/catalog/17 There is only a limited number so you have to be quick.

As Dreammary stated, a FlashBoy+ is also a great addition as you can play all of the Homebrews. If you want one just contact Minestorm (http://www.planetvb.com/modules/usercenter/index.php?section=profile&uid=545). He is 100% truth-worthy even though the ordering process is rather unusual.

I’ve noticed that; very interesting. I’m assuming it’s because Nintendo expected it to do better than in Japan and it was just as unsuccessful.

I’m kind of a purist and it’s worth the extra money to me to invest in the North American version of any game that was released here. I even did the same for Little Samson and Bubble Bobble 2 as opposed to acquiring their Famicom versions.

I just may go for Bound High. Thank you for reminding me. I remember looking at it a few days ago. I will probably contact Uncle Tusk on NintendoAge shortly. =)

I’ll probably become more interested in the FlashBoy+ as I get closer to having all the USA-releases. The definite advantage to that is certainly playing homebrews.

Yeah, man. The entire library (cart only) is cheaper than those two games (cart only) combined. I dunno if I’ll do CIB or cart only. I could always resell and upgrade… the problem is that I work during the summers and my Christmas breaks from college to earn money to live off of throughout the year so I don’t have to go to school and work at the same time. So I have a fixed budget and it’s not really practical this year. Maybe next – we’ll see!
