Hey everyone,
I have spend an huge amount of my time on a work related project for the last months. The good new is: I finally see light at the end of the tunnel. Probably in July (maybe a little bit earlier) I will be done with most of it.
That’s why I am already thinking about making a new VB game. I think I can create a pretty cool game after what I learned with GameHero. I went through several ideas and I think I found something I would like to do. The basic idea is an Adventure-Game that is a mixture of Pokemon/Zelda and Teleroboxer. However, I will figure the details out as soon as I start.
This time I am going to aim high. This means it is going to be a real game. It will have a box as well as a manual. All of this will take a lot of time though (I still have a job and everything), so don’t expect me to be finished any time soon. I will publish a demo once in a while though. I am planning to program some tools to make the game development a little bit faster. If a tool turns out to be useful, I will publish it as well.
As soon as I am in the mood, I will start with some concept arts. For now there is just the working title “Lost in Time”. I also want to so some final fixes to GameHero. I guess nobody ever played through the whole game. However, I still feel like I should do this.
Cheers,
thunder
Sounds awesome. I will be eagerly awaiting this one. I would really love to get a complete in box copy! Keep us informed. Also, i have not had very much time to play GameHero, but from what i have played, it rocks. Thanks for your contributions to the vb community.
Wow, that sounds like a pretty cool game genre combination! Definitely looking forward to it…
I’m interested, I can see the Pokemon/Zelda thing but Teleroboxer could be really weird.
Looking forward to playing it 🙂
Let me know if you want any carts making.

You can count on me being a purchaser of this game. I am so looking forward to it! 🙂
🙂 thx for the nice words everyone. I didn’t made allot progress though. I was very busy the last days… primarily with playing Zelda and watching movies.
However, I started collecting some images so I can build some first graphics. I will then use those to build a first demo.
The basic idea is a sword fighting game, that works pretty much like Teleroboxer. I think it would look cool, having a sword flying in your face, forcing you to block and dodge, waiting for your chance to hit back. Every defeated enemy will drop an item that will help you in your next fight.
I was also thinking about having a Zelda/Pokemon like overworld that connects the single fights. However, I think I will skip that for now and just go with a menu.
OK, just to give you guys some updates on this one:
I started collecting some images I will use as templates for drawing some game elements and the first opponent. I am not really skilled in drawing, but I knowhow to copy stuff from others. I also already started drawing stuff with inkscape. As soon as I am done with this basic stuff I will produce some actual code, so I can see if works the way I imagine.
Well, it has been quite some time since I did something on this project. I already regret talking about it before I really started. However, the thing that has been sucking up most of my free time is done now (almost). Everything is written and submitted and now I am really really tiered.
I will be on vacation for the next and after that I will start programming. This will be fun.
This sounds like an awesome idea. No instant combat like in Zelda, but kinda like Pokemon where you get sucked into a fight as you walk. The first person perspective sounds like the perfect fit for the VB. Especially if you have a menu system for things like item use or something during the fight.
If you ever want help with graphics, I’m a graphic designer. And while I’ve never worked on a game before, I know I could easily create sprites. I just like the idea of the game so much, I really would like to help if I can.
Keep up the good work. I hope I can try a demo before too long. 🙂
Omg, this sounds like it would be a fantastic game on Virtual Boy! Absolutely fantastic!
the vb is the perfect system for homebrew. there are so many things yet to be discovered. the vectrex now has more completed homebrew games for it than were retail releases. i hope one day the vb has the same.
good luck with your project!
thunderstruck, I’m ready to make you a cart of GameHero. Is the ‘polishing’ finished yet ?, and did you do a label design ?
I’m jealous. I have no compatible skills to aid in development of a VB game. I would love to help had I possessed any necessary skills because I am already dying to play “Lost in Time”
I am just coming out of my vacation (on week London, pretty cool City) and noticed all of the responses. I guess now I have to program something…

That would be great. I usually steal everything together by redrawing stuff with Inkscape. Would be great to have something unique.

I totally forgot I asked you about that. I guess GameHero will stay as it is, so that I can move on with something new. I will write you am PM as soon as I produced a label.

It actually is not to complicated. You just need some basic c-programming skills. Nothing that couldn’t be learned within acceptable time.
i do not want to derail this discussion but i did want to comment on the final polish.
Yeah, some of the songs are not perfect. Some of the high pitches can’t be played by the VB. Also the converter does only allow to convert one track of the midi. That’s why some nodes are missing. As the VB can play several tracks it would be possible to change this though. Also the nodes don’t fade in and out. I tried to do that but somehow didn’t get it to work. Finally some songs are played a little bit to slow. This is caused by the fact that the timing for the nodes is not done with interrupts.
it seems that you know exactly what is missing from your first game. adding these things would be the polish that the game deserves. none of us are in a hurry for a cart. i think many of us would really enjoy it if you were able fix up the game and add that final polish. however, everyone understands if your heart simply isn’t in it. i think all of us have reached a point at one time or another where we felt it was time to move on to a different project.
I love the idea of the game you are making, I can’t help you with it as I have no knowledge about it, but when you are finished I’d like to buy a couple of cartridges with the box and instructions.
Well, I have been working on this. I created the logo and came up with a new name. Too bad I can’t change the name of the Thread.
More important, I started creating a basic animation system. In GameHero I simply coded the movement of all sprites. This time I want to create a more generic approach. This should make the further game development easier. Finishing this will take me some time though.

All great things take time! I’m just excited about the concept of having another great game to play! >:]
