Hey Everyone. I had a few people ask me to make these. I know the “for display only” box exists. But what does everyone think about a box without that on it? Is it worth making or should we all just have to get that “FDO” box?
It’d essentially be the same box without the little box on the front that say for display only. Maybe add a UPC code to the back.
I’m not sure…I’d think it would have to be more different..or people will think it’s the actual box. But, what about a box for the demo red alarm/wario land ?

Now there’s a great thought! I would definitely be interested in boxes for my demos. The only drawback might be the limited number of people that have those carts. Also, how many people within that small group would be willing to pony up the dough for a box… Not sure the demand is there, but if it is, I’ll be the first in line! 🙂

Seems like the reverse of what you’re saying is bad? haha. If it were the same as the retail release for red alarm/wario and only had the “NFR” sign on it, wouldn’t it be confused as well?

I kind of agree with you here. It is available in some way, shape, form. So, why make one?
I’m going to go ahead and use this opportunity to throw in my support for the English version of SD Gundam Dimension War to be next on the list, which I know also Eric suggested not too long ago. I think the box should be made in the same style as all of the North American version boxes, so that it cannot be confused with the commercially released Japanese box (plus, if the game ever truly was commercially released in English, it no doubt would have conformed to the format to which all the North American releases conformed). Also, I already have an entire English instruction booklet made for the game, which can be freely used for this project, and I can clean it up and/or tweak it here and there if necessary, which won’t take me too much time. The format would have to be released in the same format as the Japanese manual, though, so the longest side being the vertical one. Moreover, I am confident that many non-Japanese speakers here and on other sites will never want to acquire the extremely expensive commercially released version and would rather have the version that they can actually read while playing.
(The only things not translated into English in this game are the credits. I’m guessing that thunderstruck – with his newly acquired, advanced ROM-hacking skills – could easily take the English credits that already appear on this site under the Game Credits tab for SD Gundam and replace the Japanese text in the current English-patched ROM… just sayin’ 😉

I was already wondering if there are some untranslated screens left in any of your rom hacks. I guess we can eventually translate all of them.

I agree on this.
It’s not a game that can be purchased legitimately in English and would be different enough to where it wouldn’t be mistaken for a legitimate product.
I don’t see any problem with a Mario’s Tennis reproduction box as long as your able to differentiate it from the original. It would be a good and afordable alternative.
A reproduction of the English patched version of SD Gundam Demension War sounds like a great idea.
My initial reaction to a Mario Tennis box is to be opposed to it. It seems likely that some people might order them and try to sell them as if they were the “rare” for display only boxes… but then again, sales are likely to be pretty low volume…
Making a box that’s mostly the same as the existing box can lead to consumer confusion… though not among the 20 of us that collect the system, I suppose… haha.

I think most of the people who are big into VB collecting already have the display box. I don’t have a problem with repro-ing the box. But I’m not sure how much demand is for it.

This pretty much sums it up, I think. Much as I’d love to continue to support the VB repro scene, I wouldn’t have much use for a slightly modified version of something I already have on the shelf. Might be neat as an “alternate edition” or something, though.
Now, a repro of translated Gundam… That’s another matter entirely. 🙂

When I was mentioning maybe boxes for the USA demos…I wasn’t thinking just a red alarm/wario box..maybe black/white (red/black 🙂 ?)..with a cut-out near the center so you can see the cart.
why not print something on the box that says its a reproduction? in fact, that should be considered so that something like this can be released without the fear of ripping off buyers.

+1, in my book. I like that the Bound High and Space Pinball boxes have the subtle nod about the Nintendo Seal of Quality, but I think if UT is to get into he business of reproing actual boxes, there should be some sort of “reproduction” label on it that’s visible somewhere on the front.

As far as the Mario Tennis box: I agree that it isn’t too hard to acquire a real one. There were several thousands of Blockbusters at one point in time. If they were all like the one in my town, then there were several of those Mario Tennis boxes at each location. I think the rarity of the box is a bit over hyped. Not sure if the demand is there to make it worth the time, but I could be wrong…
Re: USA demo boxes – Maybe a box with clear windowed cut-out? Ahh yes! That would been a keen idea. Perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but I still like to dream. Although, I imagine that would be a very limited market as well.
Also, the talk about translated SD Gundam in a US formatted box sounds amazing! I could definitely get behind that project.
