I’ve compiled a list of the Virtual Boy mentions in the final issue of Nintendo Power:

– Pg. 38 1994 Year in Review: VR 32 announcement
– Pg. 39 1995 Year in Review: Virtual Boy Arrives
– Pg. 40 1996 Year in Review: Nester’s Funky Bowling
– Pg. 49 Canceled Games: Dragon Hopper (screenshot)
– Pg. 63 Former NP staffer Scott Pelland says that several staffers had to be excused from working on VB games due to nausea.
– Pgs. 94 & 95 Nester & Maxwell comic (first and last panels) On the dresser there’s a Virtual Boy and a copy of Nester’s Funky Bowling.

Unfortunately no VB games were listed in their all time top 285 Nintendo games. The list was skewed towards more recent titles, more than 2/3 were released after 2000.

Sweet, thanks for the details, now to get a copy for my library.

I was personally very pissed off about this. There were several things that list needed.

-Ocarina of time should not be #1
-maybe one shooter(Axelay)
-Megaman 1 and 3 are grouped together, so why’s Megaman 2 so high!?
-NO virtual boy games at all
-NO game & Watch games, which sounds stupid, but it’s true
-NO imports what so ever, which is wrong on many levels
-Donkey kong is on the list but not DK Jr or Mario Bros?!
-Where is Wario Land 4?

Now, I understand that it must be very hard to make any top list. ESPECIALLY a top 285 list, but the list was seriously lacking, and something tells me that it was more so slapped together.

Here’s a link with the list:

I agree that it does feel slapped together, like they each put together a list of their 20 or so favorites then haphazardly ranked them.

I could easily name ten games you could argue for top 50 that weren’t included at all:

– Double Dragon (NES)
– StarTropics (NES)
– Bubble Bobble (NES)
– Super Mario Land (GB)
– Rise of the Phoenix (SNES)
– Wario Land (VB)
– Perfect Dark (N64)
– Eternal Darkness (GCN)
– Resident Evil (DS)
– Okami (Wii)

…and that’s not including imports like Mother, Mr. Gimmick, etc.

I do have to give them credit for including #202 on the list, the obscure GBC port of Metal Gear Solid is my favorite Metal Gear game and I would argue it’s the best GBC game period.

Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are definitely the top 2 Nintendo games in my book, though I’d probably put Mario 64 over Ocarina of Time.

Mario 64 I agree with, but not Ocarina. I like Majora better than Ocarina.

At least they don’t seem to have gone the path some do with these kinds of things – I vaguely recall one list of the “top 100 Nintendo games” which ended up with Tetris at the #1 spot. Not because it was the best game of them all, but because it was the most important apparently. That’s not how it works!
