Hi all,

I live in the UK and have a Japanese Virtual Boy. I snapped up an AC adapter on eBay, but realised once I got it that the adapter is for a US Virtual Boy.

Am I running into danger if I plug this into my Japanese VB? What PSU should I put into it? Would a UK SNES PSU work, or do I need to do something else?

You need a EU or JAP adapter with a JAP adapter tap or US adapter with US adapter tap to get it working per specifications. Though using the US adapter will get you to the next problem, you need a converter from 110-220V then.

The US AC adapter plug requires a US SNES adapter. I’m not sure if the European SNES uses the same connector but I can confirm a Super Famicom adapter is a different cable (same one as the Famicom).

Okay, so it’s clear that this US adapter requires a US-style power supply. Just to be clear, even though the adapter is US, my Japanese VB can still draw power safely from it, right?

Yes, as long as you feed the US adapter 110V and use a US adapter tap.

I use a Jap adaptor tap and a UK Sega megadrive 1 power supply. Never had any problems.

EU adapters for NES and SNES give out AC while the Sega does DC, so that makes total sense!

Spot on my friend. To be fair you could feed in 9vac and the regulator would sort it out, but it would run hotter so you would possibly shorten its life span. Best stick with dc.
