Has anybody ever caught a fisherman’s boot in Virtual Fishing instead of a fish? If so, do you remember if it was a single boot or a pair of boots? There is evidence in the code that either one or two boots can be caught, and I want to know if anybody has ever actually seen this and can verify whether it is one or two boots that can be caught at once.
That would be interesting to see, as its funny to catch junk. I unfortunately haven’t even caught anything ever while playing the game because it confuses me.
if it turns out that this was something removed from the game, it would be really neat if it was hacked back in.
Ben, are their any graphics for boot(s) in the ROM?
I’m on vacation so I’m nowhere near my collection, but isn’t there a picture of a boot/boots under the opening flap of the games box?

I found an array which contains all the fish-names. All of those fish are referenced in the manual. However, the last entry in the list translates to “boot” or “boots”. Not many actually played Fishing allot so it’s not entirely clear if you can catch a boot (or boots) in the free play mode.
If you want to help you could actually go ahead and play the free play mode for awhile. I can guide you through the Japanese menus. If you happen to catch a boot or boots make a screenshot and post it.
Mystery solved. It is a single boot and can be caught in free play mode.

I really want to pick this game up. I love fishing and many of the fishing simulation games that have been released throughout various consoles. I love that this game saves stats but, I know that the Japanese menus will certainly cause a bit of a hang up. I am aware that there are guides and FAQs to help along the way. Is it worth the price of admission?

Ben and I are actually working on an English translation patch for Virtual Fishing right now. The whole boot thing is just a tiny part of it. You can read about it here: http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=6156&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&type=&mode=0&start=0
