So, I’ve found the schematic for the regulator board for the VB, however really all I need to do is replace the voltage regulator on the board. Can anyone tell me what volt. regulator chip I need? 3.3v or 5v? I can’t find a local heatsink to make the schematic safe.

You need a 5V regulator, but the stock regulator also produces a POR (power-on reset) signal that must be emulated for the VB to boot. Also, if you use a switching or LDO regulator, and keep the input voltage low, you should be fine with no heatsink.
