the 3 in 3DS is red. I have two theories.
1. Red is Nintendos official color, the logo is red and Mario too.
2. It’s an homage to the Virtual Boy, being their
first 3D experiment…
#1 is probably more likely but I want to think #2 is possible =)
2. It’s an homage to the Virtual Boy, being their
first 3D experiment…
Well, not really the first…

π
That said, I’ll go with #2 as well.
1. the red/black “3” could be a tribute to its predecessor the Virtual Boy
2. it is the third DS to have different features (the DS Lite and DSi XL didn’t have new features)
3. it is the third 3D attempt by Nintendo (1. Famicom 3D System 2. Virtual Boy)
4. red was/is still sometimes related to the Nintendo logo, and Mario of course
5. 3DS is also called 3DS because its a 3D DS
6. because red + black = sexy π

1. Possible (sorry Protoman, it wasn’t the first 3-D offering from Nintendo).
2. Wrong: the DS Lite added two more back-light brightness levels source.
3. Wrong: they had working prototypes of both Gamecube and GBA with a similar parallax-barrier display. Source: “Iwata Asks” articles (don’t have time to find a link).
4. Already mentioned. But, I would like to add evidence: the 25th anniversary red Wii Mario bundle.
5. Really?! π
6. heh

I meant stuff like the “menu” where you can select to play the game and such… the DS Lite has the same menu as the DS and the DSi XL has the same menu as the DSi
also, I meant the 3D attempts they actually released, not prototypes
another thing I’ve wondered… do you think there will be a red/black 3DS due to something Mario (like his newest game that would come out on the 3DS)?
They made a red/black DS so I’m sure they will have a red/black 3DS at some point, and it probably won’t have anything to do with the VB.
I wonder how companies come up with their logos. Somehow I doubt it’s red because of the VB (since even Nintendo seems to hate the VB on some level) but I guess we’ll all keep dreaming that it’s true. π On a side note, I’ve always thought the base DS logo was dumb. It doesn’t even say “Nintendo DS”, it says “Nintendoods” (or now I guess it says “Nintendoo3ds”.)
