Original Post

I just received my Oculus Rift DK1 (from eBay; hardly used and super cheap!), and I need some stuff to play on it. Any recommendations? I would prefer things that are free/cheap and have low system requirements (although I plan to use this as an excuse to finally upgrade my PC a little).

I know I’ll need to upgrade for all but the simplest things, because it was even a little laggy in the “getting started” demo that comes with SteamVR (the one with the Portal AI core).

Also, is anyone doing any VR development? I’ve never really been able to get anywhere with Unity, but that’s probably the most widely supported DIY platform for VR. Are there any others? How hard is it to use the Rift SDK and straight C(++)? Any code samples?

Since there doesn’t seem to be one, we can also use this thread to discuss general DK1-related topics (but please no DK2- or CV-only stuff; if/when I upgrade, it will be to either the Vive or PSVR).

ShopGoodwill is another place to check out for a DK1 or DK2 (they drift by every once in a while).

Re: VR development. My work largely uses Unity, though you can pretty straightforwardly use something like OpenVR to definitely develop for the Vive and Oculus (for sure CV1 & DK2, don’t know about DK1) with C++. Seems like people have previously looked into DK1 with Open/SteamVR!

Can’t think what games would be good using the DK1 off the top of my head since I’m not super familiar with its capabilities. πŸ™

Shouldn’t the SDK be enough for straight C++ development? There’s also a book and its example code. That’s just what I found with a quick search; there’s probably more stuff out there.

I’ve been briefly exposed to Unity and I think it sucks and is full of bugs. You will probably find it too complicated if you’re used to low-level development.

As for games, there’s a bad Insmouse clone with cheap jumpscares; an old demo of it runs on the DK1. The famous roller coaster demo (or at least an old version of it) and other demos also run on it, but that’s all I remember.

If you can find a library that targets more than one VR headset and/or operating system, then I’d be interested in that too, though the VB is currently all I own. πŸ˜‰

Get a virtual boy emulator going on it!

I might just start looking for DK1’s if they’ve gotten fairly cheap. Would be cool to try out.

Zelda VR should work on DK1:

Looks like the project got stuck, unfortunately. But someone re-posted the last published build (beta 2.0) here:

VBjin-OVR works great with my CV:

I’m a 3d artist, not a developer, but with Unity I got my first simple VR scene working on my CV pretty easy, I find 😎

As near as I can tell, the current SDK doesn’t support the DK1. I’ve been trying to find a copy of the latest SDK that does support it, but so far it’s eluding me…

Maybe the example code from that book will help, but it’ll probably just rely on me having the SDK files to link against.

Sorry I don’t have time to reply to everyone individually, but I do appreciate the links and info, so please keep them coming!

I don’t know what the last version is either, but Archive.org seems to have them:

The DK2 came out in July 2014, so at least the versions from November should still work.

Thanks again, HorvatM. I haven’t had the time to reply to this thread for a number of reasons, but I am still following it, and I do plan on getting this thing fully set up and usable (including some kind of tracked wand controllers; I’m looking at a single- or dual-camera PS Move setup, at least for the short term).

I bought a new (bare-bones) PC to run VR games on, but I’m having trouble setting it up (two different SSDs I’ve tried are completely undetected by the BIOS). I’m going to go ahead with a mechanical drive for now and just live with the loading times.
