I’m just wondering what everybody who is into emulation uses for playing VB games. I use Mednafen and it works pretty great and supports 3D via anaglyph, but it’s the only thing I’ve used for years. Emulation often evolves so quickly that I was wondering if there have been any advances in the more VB specific emulators. Mednafen is the only one I know of that supports 3D, but who knows what all is out there!
Whatever the Raspberry Pi uses if I am lazy. Otherwise I just use the real VB system. I’ve been playing a ton of it lately.
Yea, I play my system when I can, but these days I have the most time to play games when I’m on travel, so emulation is the way to go. Despite Nintendo’s marketing the VB as a portable system, it doesn’t travel so well. π
I’m pretty sure Mednafen is the only one still being updated (and even then, not all that often, since Mednafen is such a big project). TMK, it’s also the most compatible.
VBJin is just a repackage of the Mednafen VB core, anyway, and it probably takes a while for the developer(s) to update to the latest one (if it’s still being updated at all; I don’t use VBJin).
Also, I’m pretty sure every VB emulator has an anaglyph mode.
Yep, Mednafen all the way. Best compatibility and a built-in debugger makes it pretty indispensable for homebrewing. Its developer is really passionate about accurate emulation and is very talented too. π
Yes, Mednafen is still the go-to Virtual Boy emulator.
Let’s not forget Rustual Boy, though. It’s in very active development, release 0.2.0-alpha just came out a few days ago. Despite the “alpha” in its version number, it’s already running pretty nicely and has a high compatability, but it’s currently command line only.
If you’re interested in the development of Rustual Boy, its author, ferris, does regular live streams on Twitch (I use to watch the recorded streams on Youtube). He recently modded an old Virtual Boy with a serial port for more effective hardware fuzzing. Highly recommended watch, although I get barely half of the stuff he’s doing. π
I wish somebody would finally make or optimize a VB emulator for the (New) 3DS. The match would be perfect.
The screen of the 3DS is slightly bigger than the VB resolution.
That means no missing stuff on screen and no scaling needed.
Everybody would be finally able to play the VB games in the propper way. 3DS homebrew is widely adopted by now.
I know there is retroarch for 3DS which included mednafen VB but as far as I understand it plays with like 1 FPS. There must be more.
The VB emulator on the N3DS isn’t too bad but it desperately needs to include 3D for the full effect. The compatibility on the games isn’t that great if I remember right. It’s been a while since I fired mine up.
For me, it’s mednafen on the Wii. Works great and emulates almost every game very well π
