I’m working on finishing my gaming backlog, and among those is Mario Clash, the most recent VB game that I’ve acquired. I’ve not played too much of it, but I’ve found myself confused about the game’s structure, more specifically, what you got to do to just “beat” the game and see any sort of ending.
There are two sources of information that I can find, two guides on GameFAQs. One appears to show 40 levels… the other shows up to 51, but said there may be 99. Not really hard info.
I’d be cool with just getting through level 40 if that would constitute a “beat,” but here’s the worrisome information:
I have heard that once you beat level 40, you beat the game and get to
see an ending, but whenever I beat level 40, it just takes me to level 41.
This may be because I bought the game used and it only shows the ending
once, but I doubt this, since the game doesn’t save high scores, it would
be unlikely it would keep track of which levels you have beaten. Or it is
also possible that the American version is different from the Japanese one.I have yet to accomplish this, but I have heard that once you beat level
100, the game starts back at level 1, with the only difference being that
the enemies move much faster. To beat the game you have to get a score
of 999,999 points (I haven’t been able to do this either).I received an email from LJBad89 saying that when he beat level 40, he
didn’t get an ending, but when he beat level 99, he did (he said it was
actually a decent ending). He also said that he did not have a score of
999,999 points when he beat the game.
OK, so what does this mean, and what is the truth?
Argh… I have a few screenshots of when I beat it somewhere around here… can’t find them though π . Anyway, the game is beaten when you get 999,990 (I think, or maybe it’s 999,999) points. Basically, the enemies all walk across the screen holding white flags saying “we give up” or something like that. It’s not an amazing ending, but better than a lot of games :-P.
DogP
Does anyone have screenshots of Mario Clash being beaten? I can’t imagine that too many people will ever be able to accomplish this, so it would be really neat to have such screenshots posted online for everyone to see. I’ve tried searching for some online and can’t find any at all. I hope to make screenshots of each of the 100,000 point increments some time in the near future, but I don’t know if I’ll ever reach the 999,990 or 999,999 point mark that “beats” the game.
Ben, you could probably use Red Dragon’s cheat finder to manipulate the score to get there faster.

True, but where would the fun be in that? π
I know this is late, but you can see the whole ending of Mario Clash in this long play. π
It shows the ending at the 1:56:30 mark, and then the guy plays the rest of the 99 stages.
Enjoy! π
But truly this game has no actual end. It’s programmed to go on forever.
You win at 999,999 but then it cycles unending.
Still an ending. π
Not a bad ending, but I would have liked to at least see Bowser at some part in the game.
Watching the video again, I found something really cool. π
Everything 100,000 points, a different character(s) appears!
100,000-Mario
200,000-Toad
300,000-Yoshi
400,000-Luigi
500,000-Wario
600,000-Peach
700,000-Bowser!!
800,000-Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr.
900,000-Mario, Luigi, and Peach
EDIT:How could there be hate for this classic? Nintendo went all out for this game, and they did a more than ok job.
Oh man… I got to see up to Peach when I got the high score that I have posted on this site, but I had no idea what was in store for me after that.
I still hope to see the rest for the first time when I make it to those points in my own high score run on a real Virtual Boy, so I will do my best not to peek at those character medals from the video ahead of time. π

The video just makes me want to own the game even more. π
