While I was setting up to take the photo of my collection I noticed that my VB stand is around the wrong way. The ends point towards the user. I’ve never noticed before but it got me thinking.
So first I decided to try and put it on the other way. To put it the “correct” way. However the mount doesn’t work if I try to turn it around. The 2 plastic pegs in the stand seem to not sit into the holes on the underside of the VB.
Then I started looking online and there seems to be a mix of images showing the stand going either way. Even on here I’ve seen the stands different.
Am I just being too gentle with my VB or is there a real reason why the stands are different?
The ends of my stand point away from me. I keep the controller behind the stand while playing and “hug” the Virtual Boy as I play. I think that’s the way it was designed.

You’re being too gentle with your VB. The “official” way is with the medallion facing the user, like the JP counter models which use the factory stand. My VBs all go on their stands backwards easier than frontwards for some reason. This is why I think most infer that it must be the right way. However, with the medallion facing the user, the VB can be positioned closer to the edge of the tabletop for a more natural experience. The weight also seems more balanced (…maybe that’s just my OCD affecting my perception?). Mine always have the medallion facing me. Always!
There are a lot of printed materials such as, pamphlets, magazine ads, and most importantly, the user manual, all of which show the medallion towards the user. For me, that last one trumps all the naysayers and their Google/images with backwards stands.
There will still be those who prefer the other way around. For instance, left-handers might also benefit from a backwards stand as the tightening knob will then be on their dominant side. I say use whichever way floats your boat as long as it doesn’t fall over. 🙂
I have a habit of playing my VB while laying down. This is where having the ends pointing towards the user is great. It means the soft plastic ends sit on my chest or gut rather than the hard plastic corners.
