I. Introduction
This is a FAQ for the Virtual Boy game 3D Tetris. It contains instructions on
how to play, solutions for all 20 puzzles, and a mini-review.
There are three game modes in 3D Tetris: 3D Tetris, a 3-Dimensional version
of classic Tetris, Center-Fill, where you try to create symmetric patterns, and
Puzzle, where you try to build 3D objects using a pre-set series of blocks.
3D Tetris was released in March of 1996 and was the final game to be officially
released for the Nintendo Virtual Boy.

II. Adjusting the Virtual Boy
After the Precaution Message the Adjustment Screen will be displayed. Taking
the time to properly adjust the Virtual Boy will reduce eye strain and maximize
the 3D effect. It is recommended you adjust the Virtual Boy before each play
session.
Adjustment procedure:
1.) Press your face firmly against the eyeshade. Please note that if you
typically wear eyeglasses or contacts then you will need to wear them
will playing the Virtual Boy.
2.) Rotate the IPD dial left/right until you can clearly see four VB boxes in
the corners.
3.) Move the Focus slider to the center position then slide it left/right
until the screen is in focus.
4.) Continue to tweak the IPD dial and the Focus slider until both the center
image and the four VB boxes are in focus.
5.) Press start when you have finished.
**IT IS VITAL THAT YOU PROPERLY ADJUST THE VIRTUAL BOY TO AVOID EYE STRAIN**
*******************************************************************************
III. Automatic Pause and Low Battery
Every Virtual Boy game has an Auto Pause feature. If Auto Pause is active,
the game will automatically pause after about 25 minutes of gameplay and
display a splash screen reminding you to take a short break to rest your eyes.
The Auto Pause menu will be displayed immediately after the Adjustment Screen
when you first power on the Virtual Boy. Auto Pause always defaults to ON
and can be toggled ON or OFF by pressing left/right on the left control pad.
Press start or A when you are done.
**IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU ALWAYS LEAVE THE AUTO PAUSE FEATURE ON**
When the batteries get low, you will see a picture of a battery flashing
in the corner of the screen.

IV. Getting Started
After the very cool opening sequence, you arrive at the selection screen.
Use the left control pad to highlight an option and press A to select it.
...............................................................................
A. Game Types
You can choose between playing 3D Tetris, Center-Fill, and Puzzle. I'll tell
you more about each type in their respective sections.
After selecting either a 3D Tetris or Center-Fill mode, you will taken to the
difficulty screen. The difficulty (Easy, Normal, or Hard) determines which
blocks will appear while the level determines the speed at which they fall.
If you choose Puzzle, you will be taken to the stage selection screen. Here
you can choose the current stage or replay one you've already completed.
...............................................................................
B. Display
Select Display to change various display options. When you are done, press B
to go back to the previous screen.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Bright
Press left and right on the left control pad to adjust the brightness level.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Depth
Again you press left and right to adjust the depth. The higher the depth, the
more pronounced the 3D. Keep this low if playing the game is hard on your
eyes.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Eyes
Select this to bring up the standard Virtual Boy adjustment screen. When you
are finished, press B to go back to the previous screen.
...............................................................................
C. High Scores
Select this to view your high scores for the various 3D Tetris and Center-Fill
modes. Press A to view the next set of scores. Press B to return to the
selection screen. The cartridge has a backup battery, so high scores are saved
when you turn off the power (yay!).

V. Basic Gameplay
...............................................................................
A. Well
The well in 3D Tetris is only five layers deep. If you stack pieces higher
than that, you will lose the bottom layer. Lose all the layers and your game
is over. If you complete a layer after losing one, you will win it back.
...............................................................................
B. Controls
L Button: Changes well perspective
L Button + Left Control Pad: Control well tilt (block stops falling)
Left Control Pad: Move the block in its horizontal plane
Select: Toggle well rotation on and off
Start: Pauses the game
R Button: Makes the current block drop faster
Right Control Pad: Rotates the current block vertically
A Button: Rotates the blocks clockwise
B Button: Rotates the blocks counter-clockwise
...............................................................................
C. Radar
The five squares lined up vertically on the right side of your screen is your
radar. Each square represents one layer of your well. Falling blocks will
cast a shadow. You can use this to see exactly where your blocks will land.
...............................................................................
D. Blocks
There are a whopping 20 different types of block in this game! They start at
the top of the well and will descend towards the bottom. You're goal is to
position the blocks so they fill in all the empty space of a layer.
Some blocks are actually composed of two or more separate blocks. Once one of
these land, you can still maneuver the remaining piece(s) to a different
location.
*******************************************************************************
VI. Game Types
There are three game types to choose from:
...............................................................................
A. 3D Tetris
This is the classic Tetris we all know and love...in 3D!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Type A
The object here is complete as many layers as you can. You complete a layer
by filling in all the spaces. Once a layer is filled in it will disappear.
Apart from the fact that it now takes place in 3-Dimensional space, this mode
isn't that different from standard Tetris.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Clear It!
Clear five layers to complete a stage. You collect bonus points for each stage
you complete. Each stage begins with some blocks already placed, the higher
the level and difficulty, the more complex the setup.
Before each stage begins, you are given a chance to study the formation and
plan your strategy. When you are ready to begin, press A to cause the first
block to begin to fall.
After completing five layers, you move on to the next stage which will again
already have some pre-placed blocks.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Scoring
Scoring for this mode is very straight forward. You get points for clearing
layers, each of the five layers has a different point value. Multiplier
bonuses are added for clearing multiple layers simultaneously or in chains.
Base Scores
Lowest Layer: 1,000 pts.
2nd Layer: 2,000 pts.
3rd Layer: 3,000 pts.
4th Layer: 4,000 pts.
5th Layer: 10,000 pts.
Multiplier Bonuses
Clear 1 Layer: x1
Clear 2 Layers: x2
Clear 3 Layers: x3
2 Chains: x2
3 Chains: x4
4 Chains: x8
...............................................................................
B. Center-Fill
The object here is to create symmetric patterns around the center block. In
Center-Fill, the center of the well is a special location, any block dropped
there will disappear.
Once you have created a symmetric pattern around the center, a formation symbol
will appear on your radar at that level (see Scoring section for more on
formation symbols). If you place a block in the center square, that layer will
be cleared.
Just like in 3D Tetris, the well is only five layers deep. If you stack blocks
higher than this, you will lose the bottom layer. Lose all of your layers and
your game is over.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Type A
The goal is to complete as many symmetrical layers as possible. The well
starts out empty and new blocks fall from the top. The five layer rule is
still in effect; build higher than that and you lose the bottom layer, lose
all your layers and the game is over.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Type B
Pretty much the same as Type A, except you start out with obstacle blocks on
the lowest level. Every time you clear a new layer, new obstacle blocks will
appear.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Clear It!
Like in Type B, you start Clear It! with some obstacle blocks already in the
well, but unlike Type B, new ones don't appear when you clear a layer. Your
goal is to clear 10 symmetrical patterns to complete the level. At the start
of the next level, there will be a new set of obstacle blocks in the well.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Scoring
Scoring in Center-Fill is a bit complicated. The instruction booklet gives
the formula: score = A x B x C where A = 10x the number of blocks in the
layer, B = complexity (see below), and C = the layer's height in the well.
You also receive bonus scores at the end of the level which is equal to the
current score divided by the number of blocks dropped into the center.

C. Puzzle
Note: Check out the wonderful FAQ by KR155E, he has ASCII diagrams detailing
the solution for each puzzle!
Puzzle is my favorite mode in 3D Tetris! The object here is to place the blocks
in the proper order to create a 3D object. After you clear a stage you are
treated to a wonderful 3D animation featuring your creation!
The block orders are always the same for each puzzle but the pieces are
oriented differently each time, sometimes you have to rotate a block and
sometimes you don't. There are 20 puzzles in all and the game saves your
progress so you don't have to do them all at once.
Before each stage, you are given a chance to study the shape. You can hold
down the L button and use the left control pad to get a good look at the
object. After you start, the outline in the well disappears, but there will
still be hints in the radar to help you tell where the blocks should go.
Complete Puzzle mode to see the credits!

VII. Game Review
This is a very fun game that puts a great new twist on the classic Tetris
formula. There are enough game modes to keep you occupied for hours.
Pros
+ Backup battery saves your scores.
+ This game has some of the best 3D graphics available on the Virtual Boy.
+ It's Tetris.
Cons
- Wireframe graphics aren't for everyone.
- The frame rate is rather slow.
- No two player option.

VIII. Useless Trivia
- If you pay close attention to the serial numbers on Virtual Boy games
(and who doesn't) then you know that the 5th and 6th letters are supposed
to be the game's initials. So how on Earth did 3D Tetris end up being
"PB"?
The answer is that the never released Japanese version of 3D Tetris was
going to be called "Polygo Block".
- 3D Tetris was the last game officially released for the Virtual Boy :(
