I. Introduction [INT]
This is a FAQ/Walkthrough for the Virtual Boy game Bound High!. It contains a
complete walkthrough of all the levels, a list of all passwords, and a mini-
review.
Bound High! was developed by Japan System Supply and was supposed to be
released in 1996 for the Nintendo Virtual Boy. Unfortunately, by the time the
game was finished, Nintendo had already pulled the plug on its red-headed
stepchild and Bound High! was never commercially released. That's a real
shame because it is such a fun game and makes better use of the Virtual Boy's
3D than any of the 22 commercially released games.

II. Adjusting the Virtual Boy [ADJ]
After the Precaution Message the Adjustment Screen will be displayed. Taking
the time to properly adjust the Virtual Boy will reduce eye strain and maximize
the 3D effect. It is recommended you adjust the Virtual Boy before each play
session.
Adjustment procedure:
1.) Press your face firmly against the eyeshade. Please note that if you
typically wear eyeglasses or contacts then you will need to wear them
will playing the Virtual Boy.
2.) Rotate the IPD dial left/right until you can clearly see four VB boxes in
the corners.
3.) Move the Focus slider to the center position then slide it left/right
until the screen is in focus.
4.) Continue to tweak the IPD dial and the Focus slider until both the center
image and the four VB boxes are in focus.
5.) Press start when you have finished.
**IT IS VITAL THAT YOU PROPERLY ADJUST THE VIRTUAL BOY TO AVOID EYE STRAIN**
*******************************************************************************
III. Auto Pause [AP]
Every Virtual Boy game has an Auto Pause feature. If Auto Pause is active,
the game will automatically pause after about 30 minutes of gameplay and
display a splash screen reminding you to take a short break to rest your eyes.
The Auto Pause menu will be displayed immediately after the Adjustment Screen
when you first power on the Virtual Boy. Auto Pause always defaults to ON
and can be toggled ON or OFF by pressing left/right on the left control pad.
Press start or A when you are done.
**IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU ALWAYS LEAVE THE AUTO PAUSE FEATURE ON**
*******************************************************************************
IV. Getting Started [GS]
Press start on the title screen to bring up the main menu:
The Adventure of Chalvo
The Adventure of Chalvo is the main game mode in Bound High!. You guide
Chalvo through 4 worlds with varying stages. Each world has an end boss as
well as a final boss at the end of the game.
Score Attack!!
In Score Attack!!, your goal is to reach a certain score threshold. After you
clear the first 16 stages, 4 more will become available.
Random Game
In the Random Game you are given two lives to complete as many random stages
as you can. These are VERY challenging and I honestly haven't made it very
far so I don't know if there is an end goal or they continue forever.
Pocket and Cushion
Pocket and Cushion is similar to pool or billiards. The object of the game
is to knock one or more balls into the hole(s) before the timer expires. In
order to clear a stage, your score must reach a certain threshold.
*******************************************************************************
V. Basic Gameplay [BAS]
Objective
The object of the game is to clear the playfield of enemies by either
destroying them or knocking them off the edge.
Controls
The controls couldn't be any simpler, just use either control pad to guide
Chalvo as he bounces.
Lives
Chalvo will lose a life whenever he falls off the playfield. When Chalvo
loses a life you must begin the stage over again. Lose all your lives and the
game is over.
You can earn extra lives by landing on the 1 on a 1/0 tile, by landing on a
1up tile, or by killing enough baddies in a single combination.
You also earn extra lives when your score passes 20,000, 40,000, 80,000 and
100,000 points.

VI. Adventure of Chalvo [ADV]
...............................................................................
A. Overview [ADVO]
The Adventure of Chalvo is the main game mode in Bound High!. You guide
Chalvo through 4 worlds with varying stages. Each world has an end boss as
well as a final boss at the end of the game.
...............................................................................
B. World 1 [ADV1]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Stage 1 [ADV11]
Bound High! starts off as easy as possible in order to give the player a chance
to get used to the controls and gameplay. There are only 5 enemies and none of
the tiles here break when you land on them.
The baddies here are called Pachins, destroy them by simply landing on top of
them. Killing a Pachin will release three small "orbs" that will destroy any
Pachins they come in contact with.
Unlike in Super Mario Bros., bouncing on multiple baddies without touching the
ground does NOT net you bonus points. However, you CAN get bonus points by
killing multiple Pachins simultaneously OR by hitting other Pachins with the
"orbs".
Defeat all five Pachins to advance to Stage 2.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Stage 2 [ADV12]
Stage 2 throws a new wrinkle into the mix: the "plain" tiles will disappear
after you land on them!
Take care of the six Pachins like before to move onto Stage 3.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Stage 3 [ADV13]
Stage 3 introduces the next type of tile: the rubber tile. Landing on a
rubber will launch Chalvo higher than usual.
There are 8 Pachin here, giving you more chances to knock them into each other
and score some bonus points.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Stage 4 [ADV14]
Stage 4 introduces yet another tile. The "sparkly" tiles are electrified,
landing on them will briefly stun Chalvo.
There are nine Pachin here, eliminate them to move onto Stage 5.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Stage 5 [ADV15]
In Stage 5 we finally meet a new enemy, the Dragonfly. Dragonflies are a lot
quicker than Pachins! More importantly, bouncing on a Dragonfly will NOT kill
it! In order to exterminate these pests, you must knock them off a ledge OR
destroy the block they're on, dropping the to their doom.
In addition to the Dragonfly, there are 8 Pachins to deal with. Once you've
defeated all the enemies you can move on to the game's first Plasma Stage.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
6. Plasma [ADV1P]
Plasma Stages are different than standard stages. The goal is to knock a pair
of plus (+) and minus (-) orbs together to make them disappear before the timer
expires. The flashing pair is worth a whopping 6,000 points!
Eliminate all the orbs before the timer expires to earn a 1-Up! After the
Plasma Stage is over you will receive your first password.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
7. Stage 7 [ADV17]
We meet a new enemy in Stage 7 that I'll call the "Jellyfish". Jellyfish are
basically slow moving Dragonflies, in order to defeat them you must knock them
off the edge.
There's also a new tile in this stage, the 1/0 tile. This tile alternates
rapidly between 1 and 0, if you land on the block while the 1 is showing you'll
earn a 1-Up!
Defeat the 12 Pachin and 3 Jellyfish to advance.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
8. Stage 8 [ADV18]
Is that a slot machine??? Why, yes, it is! Knock a Jellyfish into the hole
to start the one-armed bandit. There are four Jellyfish so you have up to four
chances to score big.
So far, I've only managed to line up the BAR symbols, which netted me a cool
10,000 pts.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
9. Stage 9 [ADV19]
There are 6 Pachins and 4 Jellyfish in Stage 9. The "ropes" connecting the
platforms can be safely landed on BUT keep in mind Chalvo will bounce much
lower than usual when doing so.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
10. Stage 10 [ADV110]
The tiles here spell out "B H" for Bound High! Quickly take out the 10
Pachins and 5 Dragonflies and get ready to face the game's first boss.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
11. Boss [ADV1BOSS]
It sure is nice of the game to give you a rundown of the boss's weak points,
isn't it?
The boss of World 1 is called Power Demogogue. He is a large snake that moves
quickly around the playfield. He has a spiked tail that acts just like an
electrified block, landing on it will briefly stun Chalvo.
You need to destroy Power Demogogue's body first. Land on body segments to
make them disappear. Once all the body segments have been destroyed, he will
move much slower and his head will become vulnerable. Land on his head three
times to finish him off.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
12. Bonus [ADV1BNS]
After you defeat Power Demogogue you'll be treated to a Bonus Stage. The goal
here is to flip as many of the ? tiles as you can before the 20 second timer
expires. Each ? tile will flipped will either earn you points or produce an
enemy. Try to line up Chalvo so he lands on the horizontal edges between the
? tiles, doing so will flip FOUR of them instead of the usual two.
After the Bonus Stage is over you'll receive another password.
...............................................................................
C. World 2 [ADV2]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Stage 1 [ADV21]
The first stage of World 2 has 12 Pachins and 6 of what I call armored
Jellyfish. Landing on an armored Jellyfish will cause Chalvo to wildly
ricochet. Typically, you will defeat them using Pachin pellets or bouncing
on their block to drop them into the abyss.
The black square in the top left of the playing field is a black hole, land
on it to activate. The black hole will vacuum up nearby baddies.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Stage 2 [ADV22]
There are 8 Pachins and 4 Jellyfish in this stage. There's also a 1/0 tile
that may give you a 1-Up.
This is the first stage where you'll encounter wind. Wind will blow Chalvo in
the direction of the "arrows". Be on the lookout for meteors flying below
the playing field, that is an indicator that a gust of wind is imminent.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Stage 3 [ADV23]
Stage 3 contains 8 Pachins. This stage is tricky because it's mostly ropes.
As you recall from before, when Chalvo lands on a rope he will bounce much
lower than usual.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Stage 4 [ADV24]
In addition to the 8 Pachins, Stage 4 introduces TWO new enemies that I will
call Crabs and Turtles. Turtles are the trickier of the two, when they are
electrified landing on one will stun Chalvo.
The playing field also has a new feature: mines. Remarkably, these mines are
not hazardous to Chalvo! Landing on a mine will cause it to shoot out 4
"Pachin pellets".
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Stage 5 [ADV25]
There are 16 Pachins and 8 Jellyfish in Stage 5. The new block for this stage
is the trampoline. Landing on one of the three trampolines will launch
Chalvo skyward causing him to land with much more force than usual. This is
great for taking out tougher enemies, but be careful, landing on tiles will
destroy them no matter the type. Trampolines disappear after a single use.
Also of note: because of the sheer number of baddies in this stage, it's very
easy to start a chain reaction that will earn you a 1-Up!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
6. Plasma [ADV2P]
The game's 2nd Plasma Stage plays just like the first one. Match the four
+'s with the four -'s to make them disappear. Match the flashing orbs for
bonus points.
After finishing this stage you'll receive another password.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
7. Stage 7 [ADV27]
There are 6 Jellyfish and another slot machine in Stage 7. The new tile for
this stage is the arrow tile. When an enemy touches an arrow tile, they are
carried along in the direction the arrow is pointing. The direction can be
toggled by landing on the tile.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
8. Stage 8 [ADV28]
This stage contains two large Turtles. Use the trampolines to land on the
large Turtles to split them into four small Turtles. Keep in mind that the
trampolines will disappear after you use them.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
9. Stage 9 [ADV29]
There are 8 armored Jellyfish in Stage 9. Use the arrows to herd as many as
you can onto the platform on the right then land on the black square to
activate the black hole. Eliminate any stragglers by bumping them into an
arrow tile facing the edge.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
10. Stage 10 [ADV210]
This stage sure is crowded! There are a whopping 16 Pachins as well as 6 Crabs
and 2 Turtles.
Land on the mines to send out pellets, with a little luck you can start a large
chain reaction that can earn you lots of points and even a 1-Up!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
11. Boss [ADV2BOSS]
The boss of World 2 is called Hades Balancer. He has two long arms with spikes
on the ends.
The first thing you need to do is get rid of his arms. Land on the round
segments to make them disappear. As his arms get shorter, he'll spin faster.
Please note that during this time it is safe to land on his face. You won't
do any damage, but it is a lot safer & easier than trying to land on the
disappearing tiles.
Once Hades Balancer's arms are gone (except for the two spikes on each end),
land on his face three times to finish him off.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
12. Bonus [ADV2BNS]
After you defeat Hades Balancer you'll be treated to a Bonus Stage. The goal
here is to flip as many of the ? tiles as you can before the 20 second timer
expires. Each ? tiles will flipped will either earn you points or produce an
enemy. Try to line up Chalvo so he lands on the horizontal edges between the
? tiles, doing so will flip FOUR of them instead of the usual two.
After the Bonus Stage is over you'll receive another password.
...............................................................................
D. World 3 [ADV3]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Stage 1 [ADV31]
The difficulty starts to really ramp up in World 3. The first stage STARTS
with 9 Pachins and 6 Armored Jellyfish. The block with a hole in it is a
generator block. Generator blocks will generate new Pachins at fixed intervals
for a finite amount of time.
Wind is particularly perilous here. The trampoline in the bottom left and the
mine in the top right are both traps meant to lure you out where the wind is
most deadly. Ignore them both and keep Chalvo in the middle of the playfield.
While you *can* use the trampoline to destroy the generator tile, I recommend
just waiting for the generator to run out.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Stage 2 [ADV32]
Stage 2 begins with 16 Pachins and 4 generators. Like Stage 1, the trick here
is to stay in the middle of the playing field to survive the wind while you
wait for the generators to finish popping out Pachins.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Stage 3 [ADV33]
Stage 3 has two Pachins and a new enemy called Billye. Landing on Billy causes
a large explosion that will destroy any enemies & tiles in the blast radius.
The force of the explosion launches Chalvo skyward just like a trampoline.
If you're skillful (and lucky), you can bounce on Billye to destroy the left
Pachin and generator and destroy the right generator when you land.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Stage 4 [ADV34]
Stage 4 has 4 Pachins and 8 Rocks. Rocks are very sturdy and only move a
slight distance when Chalvo lands on them. You can knock the Rocks into the
hole to activate the slot machine.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Stage 5 [ADV35]
The fifth stage of World 3 has 16 Pachins, 2 Turtles, and 3 Squid. Squid are
like Rocks that are made of rubber.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
6. Plasma [ADV3P]
The game's 3rd Plasma Stage is lot trickier than the first two. The plus and
minuses start on opposite ends of the playing field connected only by a narrow
strip at the top.
After finishing this stage you'll receive another password.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
7. Stage 7 [ADV37]
Stage 7 contains 1 large Turtle, 4 small Turtles, and 4 Pachins. There is a
1/0 block and a black hole block in the top left of the screen and four magic
tile blocks in the bottom right.
Use one of the magic tile blocks to create blocks around the black hole so
the small turtles will be able to wander close enough to get sucked in once
it's activated. Then you can use the trampoline in the top left to break
the large turtle into 4 smaller ones.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
8. Stage 8 [ADV38]
The eighth stage of World 3 has 2 Turtles, 6 Rocks, and 16 Pachins. There are
also two generators and a slew of electrified tiles. I recommend taking out
the Turtles first since their electric shocks can be tricky to deal with.
* Stage 8 has a portal to Another Stage hidden randomly under one of the
blocks.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
9. Stage 9 [ADV39]
Stage 9 has two large Turtles, 16 Pachins, and 4 generators. You can't break
the large turtles up this time so you will need to use finesse to defeat them.
Try to isolate them by breaking the tiles around them then use either Pachin
pellets or bounce on them with Chalvo to knock them off an edge.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
10. Stage 10 [ADV310]
Stage 10 has 16 Pachins and 6 armored Jellyfish all isolated on their own
tiles. Try to land on the armored Jellyfish dead center, this way they'll
still get knocked off but Chalvo won't wildly bounce of them. When the
meteors signal that a gust of wind is approaching, quickly make your way to
the four rubber tiles in the center to ride it out.
* Stage 10 has a portal to Another Stage hidden randomly under one of the
blocks.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
11. Boss [ADV3BOSS]
The 3rd Boss(es) of Bound High! are the Gutter Slides. There are four Gutter
Slides and they will dart around the background then briefly rise up even with
the play field. This is your opportunity to damage them. It seems daunting at
first but once you get the timing down it's actually not that difficult. You
need to land on a Gutter Slide three times to destroy it. Destroy all four
Gutter Slides to win.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
12. Bonus [ADV3BNS]
After you defeat the Gutter Slides you'll be treated to a Bonus Stage. Like
before, the goal here is to flip as many of the ? tiles as you can before the
20 second timer expires. Each ? block will flipped will either earn you points
or produce an enemy. Unlike the first two Bonus Stages, there are now some
rubber tiles sprinkled around the play field.
After the Bonus Stage is over you'll receive another password.
...............................................................................
E. World 4 [ADV4]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Stage 1 [ADV41]
World 4 starts by introducing yet another new enemy, the Honeybee. Honeybees
are a much faster version of Dragonflies! Besides the 4 Honeybees, there are
16 Pachins and 4 small turtles to deal with. There are also 4 mines you can
use to help dispatch the baddies.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Stage 2 [ADV42]
Stage 2 has 14 Pachins and 8 small Turtles. With a bit of luck, you can use
Pachin pellets to take out most of the Turtles. There three trampolines here
but I prefer not to use them.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Stage 3 [ADV43]
Masks make their first appearance in Stage 3. Masks are best described as
Rocks made out of rubber. You *can* use the arrow blocks to knock the 8 Masks
into the slot machine but I personally feel it's not worth the risk of losing
a life.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Stage 4 [ADV44]
Stage 4 has 6 Pachins and 8 small Turtles. There are also 4 generators. By
this point you should have no trouble clearing out the enemies.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Stage 5 [ADV45]
Stage 5 has 12 Pachins, 4 Masks, and 1 Billye.
The Billye is quite difficult to deal with. Landing in Billye will launch
Chalvo skyward and away from the playfield, resulting in almost certain death.
The trick here is to bounce the Masks into Billye so that he'll get knocked off
the edge.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
6. Plasma [ADV4P]
The game's final Plasma stage is actually a bit easier than the one in World 3.
Try herding all 8 orbs into the center of the playfield before trying to match
them up.
After finishing the Plasma stage you'll receive a password.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
7. Stage 7 [ADV47]
Stage 7 has 16 Pachins, 4 Turtles, and 4 Masks. There is a 1/0 tile in the
lower right of the playfield. The Masks are isolated on single tiles, try to
land on them square so Chalvo isn't sent flying in an awkward direction.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
8. Stage 8 [ADV48]
Stage 8 looks scarier than it really is! There is a single Mask in the top
left of the playfield and a 1up tile in the bottom right.
What you need to do is bounce on the large tile in the center then head for
the 1-Up tile. After collecting the 1up, CAREFULLY make your way along the
ropes to the Mask.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
9. Stage 9 [ADV49]
Stage 9 has 8 Turtles. Use the Black Hole tile in the bottom right and the
four mines to take out as many of them as you can then bounce the rest off
the board.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
10. Stage 10 [ADV410]
Stage 10 has 7 turtles. By this point you should know how to deal with them...
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
11 Stage 11 [ADV411]
That's right, World 4 has a Stage 11. Take out the 4 Turtles first then
bounce on Billye to advance to the boss fight.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
12. Boss [ADV4BOSS]
Death Octo is the boss of World 4. He's basically a Hades Balancer with four
arms instead of two.
Each tentacle has four segments, bounce on a segment to destroy it. Once the
tentacles are destroyed land on his face three times to win.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
13. Bonus [ADV4BNS]
The game's final Bonus stage is pretty much like the other three, the only
difference is that there are electrified tiles sprinkled around the playfield.
After the bonus stage is over you'll receive a password.
...............................................................................
F. Final Boss [FINAL]
Bound High!'s final boss is Mother Spiderly. This bout is an endurance match,
Mother Spiderly has four forms. Die and you have to start over from the
beginning.
Mother Spiderly starts out as a giant spider that moves quickly around the
playfield, occasionally destroying tiles as she passes over. Your goal is to
land on the jewel on her forehead FIVE times.
After landing five blows to the jewel, Mother Spiderly will sprout four
tentacles and spin around the playfield. Once again you need to land on
the jewel on her forehead FIVE times.
Mother Spiderly's tentacles will then transform into Pachins and spikes.
During this time, Mother Spiderly's head will remain still in the center of
the playfield. IGNORE IT, landing on her head now will send Chalvo flying
wildly and most likely will result in death! Instead, kill the Pachins and
knock the spike's off the playfield.
Now that only Chalvo has cleared the Pachins and spikes, land on the jewel
ONE time to finish off Mother Spiderly and beat the game!
...............................................................................
G. Powerups [PUPS]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Round Bomb [PUPS1]
The round bomb will cause a countdown that starts at 3 and decreases by 1
with each bounce. After the 3rd bounce Chalvo will explode destroying nearby
tiles and enemies.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Lucky Star [PUPS2]
Lucky Start has a 10 second timer. During this time points are increased.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Super Chalvo [PUPS3]
Super Chalvo lasts for 10 seconds. During this time, Chalvo is much larger
and more powerful than usual. He is also unaffected by wind during this time.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Stop Watch [PUPS4]
The stop watch freezes enemies for 10 seconds.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Magic Tile [PUPS5]
Magic tile has a 10 second timer. During this time, a grid will overlay the
playfield. Chalvo can land ANYWHERE within this grid, any holes he lands in
will be filled with plain tiles.
...............................................................................
H. Tiles [TILE]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Plain Tile [TILE1]
Plain tiles are solid red and are the most common type of tile. Plain tiles
will disappear after Chalvo lands on them.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Strong Tile [TILE2]
Strong tiles will not break when Chalvo lands on them.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Large Tile [TILE3]
Large tiles are solid red and are the size of four plain tiles. Landing on a
large tile will cause it to disappear.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Rubber Tile [TILE4]
Rubber tiles are like strong tiles except they cause Chalvo to bounce higher
than usual.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Electrified Tile [TILE5]
Electrified tiles are "sparkly". Landing on an electrified tile will briefly
stun Chalvo.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
6. 1/0 Tile [TILE6]
1/0 tiles will rapidly alternate between the numbers 1 and 0. If Chalvo lands
on the tile will a 1 is showing then he will earn a 1up.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
7. Rope [TILE7]
Not really a tile, ropes connect areas of the playfield. Landing on a rope
will cause Chalvo to bounce much lower than usual.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
8. ? Tile [TILE8]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
9. Black Hole Tile [TILE9]
Black hole tiles have a large black square. Bounce on a black hole tile to
activate it. Once activated, black hole tiles will vacuum up nearby baddies
for a few seconds.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
10. Mine [TILE10]
Land on a mine to send Pachin pellets north, south, east, and west.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
11. Trampoline [TILE11]
Land on a trampoline to launch Chalvo sky high. Chalvo will land with much
greater force than usual, allowing him to destroy blocks and defeat baddies
he normally couldn't. Trampolines disappear after a single use.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
12. Arrow Tile [TILE12]
When baddies touch arrow tiles, they are forced in the direction it is
pointing. You can toggle the direction arrow tiles point by bouncing on them.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
13. Pachin Generator [TILE13]
Pachin generators will generate a finite number of Pachins. It appears that
they won't generate a 2nd Pachin till the first one they generated has been
destroyed.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
14. Another Stage Entrance [TILE14]
Another Stage entrances look like plain tiles with a "scorch mark" on them.
Landing on these will take Chalvo to Another Stage.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
15. 1up Tile [TILE15]
Landing on a 1up tile will give Chalvo an extra life. So far, the only 1up
tile I have found is on Stage 4-8.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
6. All Pachin [PUPS6]
Turns all enemies into Pachins.
...............................................................................
I. Enemies [ENEM]
Note: The fan-made instruction booklet only contained names for a couple of
enemies, for the rest I have just called them whatever object they look
most like to me.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Pachin [ENEM1]
Pachins are the most common enemy in Bound High!. Bouncing on a Pachin will
pop it, releasing three "Pachin pellets". These pellets can destroy other
Pachins or knock stronger enemies back.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Dragonfly [ENEM2]
Dragonflies are stronger than Pachins, you must knock them off the playfield
to defeat them. Dragonflies can also fly, meaning they can cross holes in the
playfield.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Jellyfish [ENEM3]
Jellyfish are kind of rubbery so bouncing on one will send Chalvo wildly in
the opposite direction.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Crab [ENEM4]
Crabs are similar to Jellyfish, just not as "bouncy".
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Turtle [ENEM5]
Turtles come in two varieties: large and small. Landing on a large Turtle
after bouncing on a trampoline will break a large Turtle into four smaller
ones.
Small turtles can be electrified, meaning that if Chalvo lands on one while it
is flashing he will be temporarily stunned.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
6. Billye [ENEM6]
Billye is kind of like a trampoline except it is harder to control Chalvo
during flight. Landing on a Billye was cause him to explode, destroying nearby
tiles and enemies.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
7. Rock [ENEM7]
Rocks are kind of like small Turtles but they are never electrified.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
8. Squid [ENEM8]
Squid are bouncier versions of Jellyfish.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
9. Honeybee [ENEM9]
Honeybees are faster versions of Dragonflies.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
10. Mask [ENEM10]
Masks are like rubbery Rocks.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
11. Pac-man [ENEM11]
Take too long to complete a stage and a "Pac-man" will appear. Pac-man will
move in a straight line either horizontally or vertically, gobbling up any
tiles and enemies in his path.
...............................................................................
J. Bosses [BOSS]
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1. Power Demogogue [BOSS1]
Land on his head three
times to finish him off.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. Hades Balancer [BOSS2]
Once Hades Balancer's arms are gone (except for the two spikes on each end),
land on his face three times to finish him off.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. Gutter Slides [BOSS3]
Gutter Slides to win.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4. Death Octo [BOSS4]
Death Octo is the boss of World 4. He's basically a Hades Balancer with four
arms instead of two.
Each tentacle has four segments, bounce on a segment to destroy it. Once the
tentacles are destroyed land on his face three times to win.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
5. Mother Spiderly [BOSSF]
K. Another Stage [AS]
Occasionally when landing on a plain tile you will uncover an entrance to
Another Stage (looks like a charred plain tile).
Another Stage is like a mirrored version of the current stage with stronger
enemies. The color scheme is also reversed and every Another Stage I've
ever been to has had a 1/0 tile.
Completing Another Stage will take you to the next "normal" stage. If you
die during Another Stage, you will be taken back to the stage you came from
and the entrance will no longer appear.
*******************************************************************************
VII. Score Attack!! [SCO]
In Score Attack, your goal is to reach a certain score threshold (see chart
below). As soon as you reach the score threshold, the level will end, even if
there are still baddies left on the playfield.
Once you clear a stage a star will appear next to it and your password will be
updated. After you clear the first 16 stages, stages 17-20 will be unlocked.

VIII. Random Game [RAN]
In the Random Game you are given two lives to complete as many random stages
as you can. These are VERY challenging and I honestly haven't made it very
far so I don't know if there is an end goal or they continue forever.
*******************************************************************************
IX. Pocket and Cushion [POC]
Pocket and Cushion is similar to pool or billiards. The object of the game
is to knock one or more balls into the hole(s) before the timer expires. In
order to clear a stage, your score must reach a certain threshold (see chart
below). You earn 3,000 points for every ball you get into a hole and 100
points for every second you have left on your timer.
When you clear a stage, a star will appear to the right and your password
will be updated. After clearing the first 16 stages, stages 17-20 will be
unlocked.

XII. Game Review [REV]
Bound High! is a canceled game that was supposed to be released in 1996 for
the Nintendo Virtual Boy.
The object of the game is simple, bounce on enemies to destroy them or knock
them off the edge of the playfield. Falling off the edge yourself will cost
you a life. Lose all your lives and it's game over.
Bound High! has four game modes to play:
The Adventure of Chalvo
The Adventure of Chalvo is the main game mode in Bound High!. You guide
Chalvo through 4 worlds with varying stages. Each world has an end boss as
well as a final boss at the end of the game.
The Adventure of Chalvo is my favorite mode in Bound High!.
Score Attack!!
In Score Attack!!, your goal is to reach a certain score threshold. After you
clear the first 16 stages, 4 more will become available.
Score Attack!! does require a bit of skill and strategy but it's too similar
to the Adventure of Chalvo for my taste.
Random Game
In the Random Game you are given two lives to complete as many random stages
as you can. These are VERY challenging and I honestly haven't made it very
far so I don't know if there is an end goal or they continue forever.
Random Game is definitely my least favorite mode in Bound High!.
Pocket and Cushion
Pocket and Cushion is similar to pool or billiards. The object of the game
is to knock one or more balls into the hole(s) before the timer expires. In
order to clear a stage, your score must reach a certain threshold.
Pocket and Cushion is a lot of fun and is my favorite game mode after the
Adventure of Chalvo.
Every play mode except for Random Game makes use of passwords to save your
progress. While not as convenient as a save battery, this is a nice feature
that allows you to play the game in bite-sized chunks (which is perfect for the
Virtual Boy!).
The graphics themselves are standard for a Virtual Boy game but the use of 3D
is top notch. The way the camera follows Chalvo as he bounces is smooth and
totally lifelike. The sound effects and music are fine, but nothing earth
shattering.
Bound High! is a truly enjoyable game that makes outstanding use of the Virtual
Boy's 3D effect. This game is a must play for fans of Nintendo's red-headed
stepchild!
Pros
+ Simple yet fun gameplay
+ Passwords save your progress
+ The absolute best use of the Virtual Boy's 3D
Cons
- No save battery
- Game was never released
