I. Introduction
This is a FAQ for the Virtual Boy game Insmouse no Yakata. It contains
a list of controls, maps for each of the game's 45 levels, and a mini-
review.

II. Adjusting the Virtual Boy
If you have never used a Virtual Boy before, here is how to adjust the
screen. On the screen that says 'Virtual Boy' and has squares in the
corners, turn the dial on top until you can see all four squares. Then use
the sliding bar until the screen is in focus.

III. Automatic Pause
If you leave this on, the game will pause every 15 minutes or so reminding
you to take a break and rest your eyes for a bit.

IV. Background Story
Unfortunately the manual is in Japanese, so I have no idea what the
background story for this game is. It is supposedly based on a Japanese
movie that was based on the story The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P.
Lovecraft.

V. Getting Started
On the title screen, you have a choice between starting a New Game or
entering a Password. Use the left control pad to select the option you
want and press Start.
If you choose to start a new game, you will immediately start out in the
first level.
If you choose to enter a password, enter your letters by choosing a letter
with the left control pad and pressing A. Press B to go back a space.
Press Start when you are done. You can press Select to return to the
title screen.

VI. Playing the Game

A. Your Screen
The view of the game is first person, the square in the middle of the
screen is what is seen through the eyes of the main character. At the
middle of the top part of the screen is the timer, you have until the
timer reaches 0:00 to reach the exit or your game is over. The timer will
start to flash once it goes below 0:30 to let you know you need to hurry.
At the top left is a box labeled SHOT. This shows how many bullets are
left in your gun. Below that is a box labeled STOCK with a number inside.
This number represents the number of times you are able to reload.
Below is a box labeled KEY, when you have found the key, it will appear in
this box.
On the right side of the screen is a box labeled LIFE. Every time you take
damage, you will lose a heart, your game is over when you run out of hearts.
Below this is a box labeled ORB. When you collect an orb, it will appear
here.
At the bottom of each side of the screen there is an empty box. When there
is a path to your left or right, an arrow will appear here to let you know.

B. Progress
Here is an ASCII representation of the game map as shown after you complete
each level. The circle representing the level you are about to play will
be flashing. After most levels there are two possible next levels. The
level you will play next depends on how fast you completed the previous
level. The better you do, the higher on the map you will travel. From
start to whichever ending you get you will play 13 of the game's 45 levels.
There are four endings to the game, to get Ending A, you must start at RoPE
and finish Hyde without dying. You don't have to stay on the top path, you
just have to reach (and beat) Hyde without dying.

C. Items
Items are located in random locations throughout each level (I played the
first level multiple times and kept track of each item location, they were
all unique). You pick up an item by moving into the same square as the
item. There will be exactly one Key, one Black Orb, and one White Orb in
each level.
Key
The Key is the most important item in each level, you MUST have the Key
in order to go through the door leading to the exit.
Black Orb
This will show the key and item locations on the map screen, but not the
location of the White Orb. If you have the White Orb as well, the exit
room will be shown as a flashing square on the map.
White Orb
This will reveal the entire map on the map screen. If you have the Black
Orb, the exit will be revealed as a flashing square on the map.
Heart
Pick this up to increase your LIFE energy by one. You can have up to five
hearts.
Ammo
Looks like a bullet with "x6" on it. This will increase STOCK by one.
This most I have ever had is a stock of 4 plus the 6 bullets in the gun (30
shots total). I am not sure if this is the limit or not.

D. Gameplay
You will start every game with 3 hearts, 6 bullets in your gun, and 1 extra
reload (a total of 12 bullets). The object for every level is to find the
key and reach the exit before the timer expires. When time expires or you
run out of hearts, the game is over.
You press Up on the left control pad to move one step forward, Down to move
a step backward, and Right or Left to turn and face in that direction. Use
the right control pad to aim and the R button to shoot. Press R to reload
your gun. You can only reload if your gun is empty and you have STOCK > 0.
Press Select to bring up the map screen, press it again to return to the
game. The timer stops while you are on the map screen. Press R, L, A, B,
Start, and Select simultaneously during gameplay to reset the game.
Each level is populated with a fixed number of monsters, however they come
back to life shortly after you "kill" them, so move fast. Monsters will
start out in the same spot, but will roam around. They can't go through
doors, but sometimes a monster will break through a wall. Monsters need
to be shot with 2-8 bullets to kill them. Each monster will always take the
same number of hits to die, no matter where you shoot them. When monsters
are hit, you will see a small splatter of blood letting you know you
connected. Monsters have to be in the square adjacent to yours to damage
you, but you can damage them at a distance. Monsters can move towards you
or away from you and will also strafe side to side. You cannot go past a
monster, you must either kill it or find another path.
Your remaining ammo and hearts carries over to the next level, but if you
use a password, you will begin with the default 3 hearts and 12 bullets.

E. General Strategies
- CONSERVE YOUR AMMO! Ammo is very scarce, only attack monsters if it is
absolutely necessary.
- The best way to conserve ammo is to go around monsters whenever possible,
only attack if your only path is blocked.
- Move quickly and be sure to check your map constantly to make sure you are
not searching for the key in the same area over and over again.
- The monsters regenerate, so make sure to search that area immediately. Also
try not to kill a monster near the exit unless you have the key, otherwise
wise you will end up wasting more ammo killing it a second time.
- Once you find the key, head straight for the exit!

X. Game Review
This is a poor game, I wouldn't even consider it a real first person shooter.
Copies of this game are rare and expensive. Don't feel bad if you never get a
chance to play this game, you aren't missing anything.
Pros
- The only FPS made for the Virtual Boy.
- Some of the graphics look pretty good.
Cons
- The monsters come back to life after a few seconds.
- Aiming takes way too long.
- Monsters take a lot of bullets to kill and bullets are very scarce.
- Monster animations are kind of jerky, especially when they get closer or
move away from you.
- All of the levels look the same.
- Items are randomly placed in the levels so you spend too much of your time
hunting for keys.
- The music is terrible.
