contains a list of controls, a guide to the enemies, a level guide, and a
game review.
*******************************************************************************
II. Adjusting the Virtual Boy
If you have never used a Virtual Boy before, here is how to adjust the
screen. On the screen that says 'Virtual Boy' and has squares in the
corners, turn the dial on top until you can see all four squares. Then use
the sliding bar until the screen is in focus.
*******************************************************************************
III. Automatic Pause and Low Battery
Automatic Pause
If you leave this on, the game will automatically pause every 15 minutes
to remind you to stop and rest your eyes.
Low Battery
If a flashing battery appears at the bottom of your screen, then the
batteries are low and need to be replaced.

IV. Basic Gameplay and Controls
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Introduction from the Instruction Book
"The Clash House Tower has been invaded by bad guys! It's up to Mario to
clear them out, throwing Koopa shells to knock them away. Take care as you
battle in dangerous rooms of narrow ledges connected by pipe."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. Start Screen

B button Press this to jump
A button Press this when holding a shell to throw it in the
direction you are facing
Start button Pause
Left Control Pad Move Mario
Right Control Pad Throw a shell in the direction you push. (Note: I find
this much easier than using A.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D. Basic Gameplay
The object of the game is to knock all the enemies in a level off the
ledges. You do this by hitting them with Koopa shells. There will always
be two Koopas. If one gets knocked off, another will appear to take its
place. Most enemies have to be hit on the side (throw from the background
while they are in the foreground or vice versa).
You start the game with three lives. You can get more lives by getting a
perfect in bonus stages or by reaching a score of 20,000, 50,000, 100,000,
... points. There is a way to get an additional extra life for this (see
the Secrets section below).
Every time you kill an enemy, the mushroom counter at the top of the screen
will decrease by one. When it reaches zero, a mushroom will appear. Grab
it to cause "Fever Time". During Fever Time, one hit from any direction
will kill an enemy. Any points received during Fever Time are doubled.
Please note that killing Koopas does not decrease the mushroom counter.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E. Scoring
Jump on a Koopa 10 points
Defeat Fire or Ice 50 points
Stun an enemy 100 points
Defeat an enemy 500 points
Technical Bonus
You will get a Technical Bonus for defeating more than one with a single
throw. You only get points for the highest one you get. Here is what
they are worth:
X 2 = 1000
X 3 = 3000
X 4 = 5000
X 5 = 10000
X 6 = 30000
Time Bonus
You will get a Time Bonus if you clear a level without making a "mistake".
A "mistake" is dying or losing more than one Koopa shell. The bonus will
be equal to your remaining time X 10.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F. Progress
At the end of a level that you passed 100,000, 200,000 ... points, you will
get a brief congratulation screen. The screen shows a "Mario" character
giving you an attaboy.
Points Character Message
100,000 Mario Good!
200,000 Toad Great!
300,000 Yoshi Wonderful!

V. Enemy Guide
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. General Strategies
- Once an enemy is stunned, you can hit it once from any direction to
knock it off. Try stunning several enemies at once, then knocking them
all off with one hit to get high Technical Bonuses. THIS IS THE KEY TO
GETTING HIGH SCORES!
- When throwing a shell across, use the blocks at the bottom of each side
to help line up your shot. For example, if you are standing four blocks
from the right in the background and you throw across, the shell will
hit an enemy located four blocks from the right in the foreground.
- If you hit any enemy that must be hit from the side in the face, it will
turn around and start going in the other direction. If two enemies bump
into each other, they will both turn around and head in the opposite
direction.
- When an enemy is stunned, you can hit it from any direction to knock
it off.
- After an enemy is stunned for a few seconds, it will recover and start
moving again.
- When you hit an enemy in the side, the shell will bounce off and head
back towards you. If you catch it, it will start glowing. The more
you do this, the farther you will be able to throw that shell.
- When there is only one enemy left, it will start moving faster.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. Koopa
These are the red enemies that look like turtles.
There will always be two Koopas available. If you knock one off, another
will come out of the pipes at the top. Jump on him to make him withdraw
into his shell. You can know pick up the shell. If a you leave it alone,
it will come back out of its shell after a few seconds.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C. Spike
The weakest enemy. He looks like a Koopa with a single spike on his back.
It him with a shell from any direction once to knock him off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D. Thorny
Thorny is black and has three spikes on his back. He is stronger than
Spike. Hit him once from the side to stun him, then again to knock him
off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E. Para-Goomba
These look like funky mushrooms with eyes and wings. They can't really
fly, instead they jump around making them difficult to hit. Hit him once
on the side to stun him, then again to knock him off. Try to throw the
shell as soon as he lands, he will pause for a bit before jumping again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F. Lobb
Lobb looks like a black suitcase with a skull and crossbones on it. Lobb
will fight back so be careful when facing him. He can throw iron balls at
you the same ways you can throw shells, even across. You have to hit him
in the side once to stun him, then again to knock him off. You have to
throw quickly before he throws a ball at you. If the ball hits the shell,
the ball will be blocked, but you will lose the shell.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G. Sidestepper
Sidestepper looks like a crab. To beat him you must first hit him in the
front or back to turn him sideways, then hit him in the side with a shell
to stun him, then hit him again to knock him off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
H. Big Boo
Big Boo looks like a ghost. They will turn invisible for a few seconds,
during which time you can't hit it with a shell, but it can't hurt you
either. To beat Boo, hit it in the side once to stun it, then again to
knock it off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Snake
Snake looks like, well a snake. She is by far the worst enemy in the game.
Snakes will lay eggs, creating more Snakes and things can get ugly in a
hurry. Try to take them out as soon as possible. When Snakes get big,
they are about to lay an egg. It will take a few seconds for the egg to
hatch. You can hit it with a shell, or just run over it even if you are
empty handed to knock it off. Beat a Snake by hitting it in the side to
stun it, then again to knock it off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J. Pokey
Pokey is a cactus that looks like three balls stacked on top of each other.
To beat Pokey, first hit the two sections under the head with a shell from
any direction, then hit his head once in the side to stun him, then again
to knock him off. He will regenerate missing sections after a short while.
If Pokey is the last enemy and only his head remains, he will move VERY
quickly, so whenever possible, make sure he is not the last enemy
remaining.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
K. Fire
Fire looks like a fireball. These can show up on any level. Fire will
appear on one side of the screen, then head towards the other side. You
can hit it with a shell to make it disappear. Your shell will go through
the Fire, so if you hit it from the side, you will lose the shell.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
L. Ice
Ice looks like an icicle. It will only appear in ice levels. You can hit
it with a shell to destroy it, but you can actually ignore it. Ice will
form at the bottom of a top level, slowly get bigger, then drop down. It
is very easy to avoid Ice.

VI. Level Guide
Before each level, you are given a preview of the type of enemies that you
will face. You start each level hanging from a chain in the middle. Use
the left control pad to change which direction you are facing, then press
R to jump off. After certain levels, you will play a bonus game for more
points and a chance for an extra life.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 1
Enemies: Spike 2
Basic Tactics:
This being the first level, it is very simple. The two types of enemies
here are Koopas and Spikes. To clear this or any level, you must knock
off all enemies except the Koopas. (It's okay to knock them off, but
in most cases it doesn't help your progress.)
Jump on a Koopa, then throw the shell at one of the Spikes. Then retrieve
the shell and hit the other one.
Expert Tactics:
Jump on a Koopa and get a shell. Hit the other Koopa in the side twice
with the shell to charge it up, then throw it at the Spikes for a 2X
Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 2
Enemies: Spike 3
Basic Tactics:
This level is actually easier than level 1. Jump on a Koopa and grab the
shell. Throw it at the lead or last Spike to kill all three in one hit and
get a 3X Technical Bonus.
Expert Tactics:
None
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 3
Enemies: Thorny 2
Basic Tactics:
In this level we get a new enemy, Thorny. To beat Thorny, you must hit him
in the side to stun him, then again to knock him off. Use the blocks at
the bottom of the ledges to line up your shots.
Expert Tactics:
Get a Koopa shell and stun one of the Thornys. Then let the other one
get close to it and then stun that one. Then take them both out with one
hit for a Technical Bonus. If the other Koopa gets stuck between them,
hit it twice from the side to knock it off and clear the path between the
Thornys.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 4
Enemies: Spike 2
Thorny 1
Basic Tactics:
Take out the two Spikes, then go after the Thorny.
Expert Tactics:
Stun the Thorny first, then take out all three enemies with one hit to get
a 3X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus Chance
Coins: 15
This is the first Bonus Chance. Try to catch all the coins as they come
from the background. Each one is worth 300 points. If you get them all,
you will be rewarded with an extra life. Each time you get a coin, the
four flags raise up a little. If you look at the spectators you will see
Luigi, Princess, Yoshi, and Toad.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 5
Enemies: Thorny 4
Basic Tactics:
The Thornys here are all in a row, making them easier to hit.
Expert Tactics:
Stun all four at once, this is done easiest when they are on the top ledge
in the foreground. Wait till they get in the middle, then stun the first
one, then the last one, then the two in the middle, then take them all out
with one hit for a 4X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 6
Enemies: Para-Goomba 2
Basic Tactics:
This level is the first one where Para-Goombas appear. To defeat the
Para-Goombas, hit them from the side once to stun them, then again to knock
them off.
Expert Tactics:
Stun both Para-Goombas, then take them out with one hit for a 2X Technical
Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 7
Enemies: Spike 2
Para-Goombas 2
Basic Tactics:
Take out the Spikes first, if you are lucky, one will bounce off one of
the Para-Goombas and head towards the other Spike giving you a chance
for a Technical Bonus. Then go after the Para-Goombas.
Expert Tactics:
It's a little bit tricky, but try to stun both Para-Goombas on the same
level, then wait for the Spikes to get close and then take out all four
enemies at once for a 4X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 8
Enemies: Thorny 2
Para-Goomba 1
Basic Tactics:
This is the first ice level. When you try to stop moving, you will slide
a little bit. Fortunately Ice will not appear in this level. Take out the
Para-Goomba first, then go after the Thornys.
Expert Tactics:
Try to stun all three enemies in the background, then take them out with
one hit for a 3X bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 9
Enemies: Lobb 2
Basic Tactics:
This is the first level where there are no blocks to help you aim your
shots across. This is also the first level where Lobb appears. Lobb can
throw iron balls at you. To beat him, hit him in the side with a shell
once to stun him, then again to knock him off.
Expert Tactics:
Stun one of them on the bottom back, then wait for the other to go to the
bottom back and stun it as well, then take them out with one hit for a 2X
Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 10
Enemies: Thorny 2
Lobb 2
Basic Tactics:
There aren't any blocks here to help you aim either. Take out the Lobbs
first, then go after the Thornys.
Expert Tactics:
Try to herd all of the enemies into the bottom of the foreground. Do this
by hitting them in the head to turn them around. Then stun all four
enemies and take them out with one hit for a 4X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 11
Enemies: Sidestepper 3
Basic Tactics:
There aren't any blocks to help you aim your shots. This is also the first
level where Sidesteppers appear. To beat them, hit it once in the front or
back to turn it sideways, then hit it in the side to stun it, then again to
knock it off.
Expert Tactics:
Try to stun all three at once then take them out with one shot for a 4X
Technical Bonus. The easiest way to do this is to herd them into the
background, stun the ones on the ends, then the one in the middle, then
taking them all out with one shot.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 12
Enemies: Thorny 2
Sidestepper 2
Basic Tactics:
The bad news is that this is an ice level and the first one where Ice will
appear. The good news is that the blocks are back to help you aim your
across shots. Take out the Thornys first, then go after the Sidesteppers.
Expert Tactics:
Try to stun all four enemies at once on the bottom level of the foreground,
then take them out with one hit for a 4X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus Chance
Coins: 20
Just like before, get as many coins as you can. The coins are worth 300
points like before, except there are now 20 of them and they are harder
to catch.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 13
Enemies: Snake 3
Basic Tactics:
Snakes are a real pain. Take them out as quickly as possible. To beat it,
hit it in the side with a shell to stun it, then again to knock it off. If
a Snake lays an egg, quickly knock it off with a shell or by running over
it to prevent it from hatching and creating a new snake.
Expert Tactics:
Jump into the foreground from the chain, then get a Koopa shell. Hit the
Snake coming through the pipe on the right to send it back in and to the
background. Stun it and the one next to it. Hit the Koopa from the
side twice to knock it off and charge up your shell. Stun the last Snake,
then take all three out with one hit for a 3X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 14
Enemies: Spike 3
Snake 2
Basic Tactics:
Take out the snakes first, then go after the Spikes.
Expert Tactics:
Try to stun the two Snakes quickly before they have a chance to lay eggs.
This is tricky because they start out on opposite sides. Once you stun
them, try to take out the other Koopa to charge up your shell, then take
out all five enemies with one hit for a 5X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 15
Enemies: Boo 3
Basic Tactics:
Hit Boo once in the side to stun it, then again to knock it off. They will
sometimes turn invisible for a few seconds. During this time, you can't
hit Boo with a shell, but it can't hurt you either.
Expert Tactics:
Stun all three at once, then take them all out with one hit for a 3X
Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 16
Enemies: Thorny 3
Boo 2
Basic Tactics:
Go after the Thornys first, then go after the Boos.
Expert Tactics:
Stun the two Boos first, then the Thornys, then take all five out with one
hit for a 5X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 17
Enemies: Pokey 3
Basic Tactics:
To beat Pokey, first hit the two sections under the head with a shell from
any direction, then hit his head once in the side to stun him, then again
to knock him off. He will regenerate missing sections after a short while.
If Pokey is the last enemy and only his head remains, he will move VERY
quickly.
Expert Tactics:
Knock the bottom sections off all three first, then stun them and take
all three out with one hit for a 3X Technical Bonus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 18
Enemies: Thorny 2
Pokey 3
Basic Tactics:

Levels 52 - 99
The remaining 47 levels don't contain anything you haven't seen already. After
completing level 99, the game goes back to level 1. There is no ending.

VII. Beating the Game
I have heard that once you beat level 40, you beat the game and get to
see an ending, but whenever I beat level 40, it just takes me to level 41.
This may be because I bought the game used and it only shows the ending
once, but I doubt this, since the game doesn't save high scores, it would
be unlikely it would keep track of which levels you have beaten. Or it is
also possible that the American version is different from the Japanese one.
I received an email from LJBad89 saying that when he beat level 40, he
didn't get an ending, but when he beat level 99, he did (he said it was
actually a decent ending). He also said that he did not have a score of
999,999 points when he beat the game.
I have yet to accomplish this, but I have heard that once you beat level
100, the game starts back at level 1, with the only difference being that
the enemies move much faster. To beat the game you have to get a score
of 999,999 points (I haven't been able to do this either).
I received an email from jmctoliver saying that once you get 999,999 points
you get a message saying you beat the game. Once you run out of lives, you
get a short cutscene where the flag at the top of the tower is lowered.
UPDATE:
KRI55E has confirmed that there is no ending. Once you beat level 99, the game
goes back to thefirst level.

VIII. Secrets
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Extra 1-Up
When you reach 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 150,000 ... points, you will receive
an extra life and the word 1UP will go across the back from the right to
the left. If you hit it with a Koopa Shell, it will split into two and you
will receive an additional extra life.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. Level Select
Not that big of a secret, but at the start screen you can choose between
levels 1-40.
I am convinced that there must be a code of some kind that allows you to
select levels 41-100, but I have yet to discover it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C. Level Skip
I have seen a level skip code on several websites where by pushing
left and right in a certain combination while playing you skip to the next
level, but have yet to get any of them to work.

IX. My High Scores
Note: Please don't send me emails about high scores, I am sure that many
of you can do much better than this.
Points Level Started Level Ended
383,720 1 39
The highest level I have reached when starting at level 1 is 39.
The highest level I have reached is 51 (I started at level 40).

X. Game Review
This is considered by many people to be the worst Mario game ever and I
have to agree. The original Mario Bros., which this game is a remake of,
was a lot of fun, but Mario Clash isn't as much fun. If you are looking
for something along the lines of Super Mario Bros., I suggest you try Wario
Land instead.
That being said, there is something about this game that makes me keep
playing it. The more you play the game, the more it grows on you. This
game isn't for everyone, but if you give it some time, you might find that
you really enjoy it.
Pros
- One complaint about Virtual Boy games in general is that they are too
easy, however this game is definitely challenging.
- Gameplay is fast-paced and addictive.
- The game does have some great 3D effects. The first time I played the
game, I was on the top level of the back and threw a shell at an enemy
on the front. I missed and the shell continued to come at me. I
actually ducked because it really looked like it was going to hit me in
the face. Try it. The opening cinema is another example.
- The levels, while all pretty much the same are nicely rendered.
Cons
- This game is REALLY challenging.
- No two player mode, which is sad because that was a large part of the
fun of the original.
- This game is very long and while you can start at any level 1-40, there
isn't any way to save your progress.
- Mario and the enemies look like cardboard cutouts.
- You must defeat all but two of the enemies by hitting them in the side.
More variety of ways to beat them would have been nice. (Why can't you
stomp on the Para-Goombas like you can in SMB 3?)
- Controls are very sluggish.
- Each level has only a front and back layer. Multiple layers would
have added more variety.
- The game doesn't save your high scores.
- Luigi, Princess, or Toad only appear as spectators for the bonus game.
