Nearly every console has a showcase moment.
A special moment that highlights the abilities of a system and why it matters. An example may include Super Mario 64 for the N64 where it felt like a whole new world opened up when you were playing Mario in 3D or even messing around with Mario’s face in the title screen. Another example includes Wii Sports which highlights how motion controls can bring a level of accessibility and fun to all ages that a typical game experience doesn’t offer.
Many people believe that the Virtual Boy does not have a Mario 64 moment that showcases why the console exists as many games like Virtual Boy Wario Land or Panic Bomber can be played on a home console and don’t lose anything. Many people felt that there was no point for the console existing for how weird it is.
I disagree.
People may think this way from their own impressions but nearly everyone overlooks a particular game that showcases why the Virtual Boy matters.
That game is Teleroboxer.
This is the game that showcases the abilities of the controller, graphically pulling off sprites that the SNES would struggle with, and puts you into a brand new world that you are in the robot boxing ring ready to put up a fight.
Not only that but it has a high level of polish and fun that is difficult to find in other Virtual Boy games which makes it stand out.
This should have been the pack in title for the console instead of Mario’s Tennis.
Everyone in the Virtual Boy community sings high praises to Virtual Boy Wario Land yet a particular launch game gets overlooked.
I think if more people experienced Teleroboxer, more people would appreciate the abilities of the console and why it matters.
The biggest downside is its hard difficulty as a fighting game and yes this game isn’t a cakewalk. However for me most fighting games aren’t and even knowing I may suck at Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter for eternity, it doesn’t mean I don’t have fun losing and trying to get better.
Teleroboxer I feel has a fun level of difficulty that even a person that sucks at typical fighting games can still persevere in this game. (At least get the bad ending, I am working on getting the good ending and to beat the cat!)
I highly recommend playing Teleroboxer and experiencing the Virtual Boy showcase moments instead of overlooking it.
