I. Introduction
This is a FAQ for the Virtual Boy game Virtual League Baseball. It
contains a list of controls, an overview of gameplay, a roster for each
team, and a game review. Please note that I used the American version
of the game to make this FAQ. I have included a section on Virtual
Professional Baseball '95, which is the Japanese version of the game.

II. Adjusting the Virtual Boy
If you have never used a Virtual Boy before, here is how to adjust the
screen. On the screen that says 'Virtual Boy' and has squares in the
corners, turn the dial on top until you can see all four squares. Then use
the sliding bar until the screen is in focus.
*******************************************************************************
III. Automatic Pause
If you leave this on, the game will automatically pause after you have been
playing for 30 minutes or at the end of each game. Before it pauses in
the middle of a game, you will hear a tone. While the game is paused, it
plays a rendition of "Take me out to the ballgame".

IV. Rules, Basic Gameplay, and Controls
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Introduction to Baseball
A game of baseball lasts for nine "innings". An inning has two parts. The
first part is called the "top". During the top of an inning, the home team
plays in the field and the away team bats. During the second part or "bottom"
of an inning, the away team plays in the field and the home team bats.
The object of the game is to score the most "runs". A run is scored when a
runner reaches home plate without being tagged out. The run doesn't count if
another base runner makes the 3rd out before the runner reaches home. The
team with the most runs after nine innings wins the game. If the home team
is winning after the top of the ninth is over, they automatically win and the
bottom of the ninth isn't played. If the game is tied after nine innings,
additional innings are played until there is a team ahead after the end of an
inning.
The field itself is divided into two parts the "infield" and the "outfield".
The infield consists of the diamond area formed by the four bases. The base
at the bottom is called home plate. The base to the northeast of home is 1st
base. The base to the northwest of 1st is called 2nd base. The base to the
southwest of 2nd is 3rd base. The pitcher's mound is located in the middle of
the infield. The area to the north of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd bases is called the
outfield. There are three boundary lines on the field. The foul lines are
the lines that run from home plate through either 1st or 3rd base. A ball
that is hit by the batter and lands outside these lines is foul and the batter
is penalized with a strike. If he already has two strikes, he doesn't get
another one for hitting a foul ball. Runners cannot advance on foul balls, but
a fielder can catch a ball in foul territory for an out. The ball is then
treated as if it was caught in fair territory. A ball that lands between the
foul lines is a fair ball and the runners can advance. The third boundary is
north of the outfield, usually designated with a fence. A ball hit over this
boundary is called a "home run" and the batter and all base runners head to
home plate and each one counts as a run.
A team gets three chances or "outs" each inning. A player is out when he
gets three strikes, is tagged with the ball while not on a base, or a ball hit
by him is caught by the opposing team before it hits the ground. If the ball
is caught, the base runners must go back to their base and "tag up" before the
can advance. If an opposing player with the ball touches the base before the
runner gets back, the runner is out.
The game is played like this: The team in the field has nine players on the
field. The team batting has one batter in the batter's box and can have up to
three baserunners. When the ball is pitched, the pitcher must be on the mound
and the catcher in the box behind home plate, but the other 7 fielders can be
whereever they want. There is usually one fielder playing at each base (known
as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd basemen), one playing between 2nd and 3rd (the
shortstop), and three in the outfield (outfielders). Both teams have extra
players on their benches. You can make substitutions for pitchers, runners,
and fielders.
The pitcher will throw the ball to the catcher behind home plate. The batter
tries to hit the ball. During an at bat, the batter gets 3 strikes and 4
balls. A strike is a pitch that a batter swings at and misses or a pitch that
a batter doesn't swing at that crosses the "strike zone". The strike zone is
an imaginary 3-D rectangle that is the area directly over home plate that is
between the batter's knees and shoulders. A batter also gets a strike if he
hits a foul ball and has less than two strikes already. If a player gets
three strikes, he is out. A ball is a pitch that a batter doesn't swing at
that doesn't cross the strike zone. If a batter gets four balls, it counts
as a "walk" and he gets to go to 1st base. If there is a runner on 1st already
he moves up to 2nd and so on. If there were already three runners (known as
"bases loaded") the runner on 3rd goes to home plate and scores a run. If a
batter hits a ball in fair territory, he tries to advance as many bases as
possible without being tagged out. After the runner stops (or is tagged out),
the next batter comes up to bat. The runner can try to advance before or
during a pitch (called "stealing"). A runner cannot go back to a previous
base after tagging a new one and the bases must be tagged in order. Runners
on 1st must run to 2nd if the ball is hit. If a fielder tags 2nd before the
runner on first gets there, the runner is out (called a "force out"). If there
is a runner on 2nd and 3rd and the runner on the previous base is forced to
run, they must run too. If there isn't a runner on 1st, any runners on 2nd
or 3rd do NOT have to advance if they don't want to. Once the hitting team
gets three outs, that half of the inning is over and the teams switch.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. Rule Changes for the Game
- The slaughter rule is in effect. If a team is winning by more than ten
runs at the end of an inning, that team will automatically win.
- You cannot make a "double switch" substitution (e.g. sub for the pitcher
and a fielder, and have the new fielder bat in the old pitcher's spot and
the pitcher bat in the old fielder's spot in the batting order.)
- You cannot use a pitcher as a pinch hitter or runner.
- If you swing and miss for strike three and the ball gets away from the
catcher, you CANNOT try to run for first base, you are automatically out.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C. Getting Started
On the Mode Select screen, you can choose one of the three game modes.
Use the left control pad to select a mode and press start. Hit B if
you want to return to this screen.
Player 1 vs Computer
Choose from one of 18 teams to play a game against the team of your
choice.
All Star Game
Choose from one of the three league's all-star teams, then choose an
opponent.
Pennant Race
Choose a league or enter a password. Play against the other teams in your
league in a mini-pennant race. In this mode you play each team of your
league until you beat them once, then play the league champs of the other
two leagues. You then have to play the Miracle and Galaxy teams. You're
record doesn't count, you just keep playing a team until you beat them.
BGM
Press left or right on the left control pad to toggle the in-game
background music on or off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D. Basics
The first thing you do before a game is decide whether or not to use a
DH and whether you bat first or second. Press up or down to change the
DH option and left or right to change whether you bat first or second.
Press A when you are done.
On the next screen you choose your starting pitcher. As a general rule,
the lower a pitcher's ERA, the better he is. Players with stars next to
them are "hot" for that game, and will perform better than usual.
The next screen shows your lineup. On this screen you can change your
batting order and change a players position. Select exit when you are
done.
During gameplay, press start to bring up the adjustment screen. Press
Select during gameplay to bring up the sub screen. Here you can make
substitutions for pitchers, hitters, fielders, and runners. Please keep
in mind that once a player is taken out of the game, he will be not be
able to return.
A note about throwing or running to bases. To choose a base, press the
corresponding direction on the control pad. Right is first, Up is
second, Left is third, Down is home.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E. Pitching Help
To position the pitcher press left or right on the control pad. Press A
to start the meter, hit A again to release the ball. The higher the
meter, the faster the pitch will go, but if you stop it to the right of
the hash mark, you will throw a bad pitch. You can control the pitch a
little while it is in the air using the control pad. If you hold up or
down (start holding before you press A) the pitch will go high or low.
Use B instead of A to throw a forkball, a ball that drops into the dirt.
To attempt to pick off a base runner, press R or L, then hold the control
pad in the direction of the base you want to throw to and press A to
throw. Your pitcher will get tired as he throws, when he is really tired
he will start breathing heavily. You should then sub in a new pitcher.
A pitcher will use up about 50 stamina per inning, so be sure to keep an
eye on it by pressing Select and then relief pitcher. Be sure you don't
run out of pitchers before the game is over! Throwing a forkball or giving
up a big hit will decrease your stamina the most.
See the Easy Way to Win section for information on how to strike out nearly
every batter you face!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F. Batting Help
Use the left control pad to position the batter in the box and control
the swing. Press A to swing the bat. If you hold R or L, you will bunt.
If you have base runners, you can tell them to steal by designating a
base and pressing B while the pitcher is pitching.
When running, you make runners run to the next base by designating that
base and pressing B. Make runners go back to a base by pressing A.
If you want to change the batter, you can press Select and choose Pinch
Hitter.
It is very important to hold down A while swinging so you will follow
through with your bat and hit the ball harder.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G. Fielding Help
Use the left control pad to control the fielders. If the ball is in the
air, move a fielder under the ball to catch it. Use the ball's shadow to
help. The ball will be caught automatically if you are in the right spot.
Use A to jump or dive for the ball. Once you have the ball, designate a
base to throw to using the left control pad, then press A. You can also
run to a base by pressing B.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
H. Easy Way to Win!
First the good news...
Here is how to win a game easily. Choose a pitcher that throws from the
side (has a form of LS or RS). When you pitch, hold down on the left
control pad and don't stop holding it down until the pitch is over. Press
A to start the meter and try to stop it about two or three hash marks
before the big one. This will cause the pitch to be thrown very low, but
as long as it crosses the plate, it will be a strike. The CPU batters will
rarely be able to hit this pitch and won't be able to do much damage with
it when they do. Using this method you should be able to strike out at
least 20 batters, which means you won't have to worry about fielding that
many balls and your opponents won't score that much. This method also
drains about only 1 point of stamina per pitch, so any pitcher with stamina
100 or more should be able to pitch for the entire game! If you are having
trouble scoring enough runs, I would suggest using a DH, using this method,
the DH won't really help the CPU, but would give you an offensive boost.
Now the bad news...
Many teams have no pitchers that pitch side-arm, which means you can't
use this method with them. Many of the other teams only have one, and
that pitcher usually only has stamina of 50, which means he will most
likely be able to go no more than six innings.

This is probably the best team to use the Easy Win method with. I would
recommend going with Simpson unless Wright has a star beside his name.
In a DH game, I would make Baufield the DH and put Garcia in left field.

VI. Passwords
I got some of these from www.virtual-boy.org, some from www.vr32.de, and
some from actually playing, but I figured out the rest by playing around
with the password system. Those two semesters of Cryptology came in handy
after all (yes I realize the password system for this game is a joke).
Note: A H represents a heart, a D a diamond, a S a spade, and C a club.
PL is PAN-AM League, AL is Asian League, EL European League, WL
is World League, and SL is Special League.
Where it says vs. MISSINGNO, the name of the team is scrambled and
when you try to start the match the game locks up or resets.
Where it says vs. and then nothing or vs. then a team but no password,
I have a password for the match before or after it, but not that match.

VII. Virtual Professional Baseball '95 FAQs
1. What is Virtual Professional Baseball '95?
Virtual Professional Baseball '95 is the Japanese version of Virtual
League Baseball.
2. How are the two different?
Here are the major differences in the Japanese version:
- Most menus and all player names are in Japanese.
- The players look like monkeys without tails, (they are SUPPOSED to
be deformed, it isn't a result of bad programming)
- Most of the music is different.
- The teams are imaginary league teams, not imaginary national teams.
- It could be just me, but in the Japanese version, it seems like it
is easier to see the ball shadow while fielding and that the fielders
and runners move slower than in the American version.
3. Is the game really in orange, I thought the VB could only do red and
black?
The game is in red and black, the orange screenshots you may have seen came
from the box and instruction book.
4. Which version is better?
In my opinion they are the same, if you hated one you will hate the other.
They are so similar that most people consider the two as one game, no
different than the US and Japanese versions of Mario's Tennis.

VIII. Game Review
This game is considered by many to be the worst made for the Virtual Boy,
but I actually like it. It is far from perfect but is very entertaining.
This game is a lot like RBI Baseball for the NES with many of the same
strengths and weaknesses. You can often find new copies of this game for
only a dollar, so you have nothing to lose by giving this game a try. You
might just be surprised how much depth this game has.
Pros
- You can easily find an unopened copy for under a dollar.
- Game has a lot of depth.
- Plays a lot like RBI Baseball for the NES.
Cons
- The in-game graphics are really bad. It is often difficult to tell
fielders and baserunners apart.
- Fielding is tricky and takes a lot of work to get the hang of.
- Fielders run much faster than baserunners or than they can throw the
ball.
- It would have been nice if the right control pad was used for throwing.
- Pitchers get tired way too quickly.
- No MLB license.
- Game doesn't save stats.
- No season mode.
- Difficult to find and compare player stats. (This is the main reason
I wrote the FAQ and hopefully it solves this problem.)
- Game has a definite arcade feel to it, home runs are very easy to hit.

IX. Useless Trivia
Here is some useless and pointless trivia for your amusement:
- This is the only Virtual Boy game that had a sequel developed for it.
Virtual League Baseball 2 was supposed to be released in 1996, but it
never was.
- There is a misprint on page 33 of the instruction booklet. It has
India listed under the Pan-Am league instead of Cuba.

I would appreciate hearing what you thought of this guide and any thoughts
you have for improving it.
When sending me team passwords, please keep in mind that there are many
different passwords for each matchup. I would be interested in passwords
that are for matchups I don't have yet such ones that allow you to play AS the
Miracle and Galaxy teams.
