I wonder if he will try to make it 3D in a future revision? Most of it wouldn’t necessarily lend itself to being 3D but some parts would I suppose.

Oh my gosh – this is cool! And is Bad Apple in 3D?

Nope, just 2D.

Thanks for chiming in with info for this thread! Glad to get some answers straight from the source. Is there anything left to discover in HF, I wonder? Waiting with bated breath for that patch!

You are right, it’s definitely a dog, my dog 🙂
I asked Mr. Anon to add him as an easter egg for ROM hackers.
I know that disassembling and analysing a ROM can be time consuming and quite disappointing if there are no secrets to be found.

@thunderstruck

Congratulations for being the first one who found Lucky! I think you deserve a prize. Send me a PM with your email address and I will send you something cool.

Btw. I remember that there were more debug menus which I activated through the emulator. I could for example >choose the stage or select the speed on the figther selection screen. I didn’t make and screenshots though.
I never figured out if there is a button combination to activate those.

That was probably just the selection screen from the VS mode.

BTW, regarding ROM hacking, I uncovered myself a rather big secret in a commercial VB game. By writing a bit of additional code, I was able to get the hidden content working. Considering that the game makes now much more fun, it’s quite strange that this part of the game has been disabled for the final version. I will release a patch in a few days. Till then enjoy the thrill of anticipation 😉

I’ve always wondered about this too, though I suspect it has been discussed before. I noticed that if I touch my multi-meter to the contacts of the US AC adapter tap with the US AC adapter plugged in it puts out about 12.5V DC. Granted this is “unloaded” since the VB isn’t turned on/attached, but I always wondered if I could safely come up with a way to take it easier on my system. Hopefully some of the electronics folks on here will chime in.

I currently use an Atari Jaguar Power Adapter (DC 9V 1.2A) plugged into the Japanese VB Adapter Tap, as I am told that using a lower voltage Power Source would extend the life of the VB(?).

With all of that being said, is using the standard U.S. Power Tap bad for the VB, as it is used with a 10V AC Adapter?

There is a page for it on this website with a couple of pictures.

Performance made a Power Tap?

Can I get a photo of one?

I’ve always thought that when people would refer to it, that they were actually talking about an actual power adapter (that plugged into the wall), and not a tap.

Never been before but always wanted to go. This year I resolved to finally go and I’m all set!

Hey gents i should be going.

Have any of you been there before?

Agreed. Also, anyone chime in that’s going to Classic Game Fest in a couple weeks in Austin. I’ll be there!

I’m in the Fort Worth area. Funny you asked because I was thinking it would maybe be cool to have meet-ups every once in a while if anyone is nearby. Especially since link cables are finally hitting the scene.

I pulled it out and extracted the board and it looks to be in pretty good shape. It’s all yours. It will probably be a few days before I can get to the post office though. I’ll PM you details.

So I was playing the other day as Ben and it seems like your character is a re-skinned Ryu as far as moves and whatnot. Is that true, or do you have any other non-Ryu special moves? I tried a few things but couldn’t get anything to work.

I have a for parts VB that I bought years ago that was broken. I don’t remember what was wrong with it. I needed it for the LEDs and controller connector board. Everything else should be present. How hard is it to remove the part you need?

There is a common problem. Because of a poor design choice by Nintendo, the ribbon cables from the main board were glued to the LEDs that make the image in each eye. Over time the glue degrades and contact is lost between the cable and the LED boards. The results is glitch displays, lines missing, etc. The fix is to properly solder the ribbon cable to the LED board but it involves that really fine soldering. All 2 of my 3 systems were glitchy, so I went ahead and had all 3 repaired (6 LEDs total) and a user on here RunnerPack did it for next to nothing in my opinion. I just opened up the systes, removed the LEDs, sent them off, then re-installed them. It was fairly easy on my end and all work great years later.

As for link cable support, only HF and a couple other homebrews support it. I’m hoping that a lot more will after cables go out to the community.

I’m a VB OG too. I specifically remember buying mine new at Walmart along with Galactic Pinball and Virtual League Baseball, though it was near the end. I wanna say it was $40 or maybe $60. And VLB was mis-marked so I got it for something like $5. I got my 2nd VB from my roommate who gave it to me because he lost some of my CDs and I got my third on eBay due to an offer I couldn’t refuse. All 3 boxed and in working order thanks to the handy work of @RunnerPack… all were repaired via the LED soldering mod. I added to my game collection as the years went on and felt like I found my people when I found this website! I can’t wait for the link cables that are almost a reality!

3?? haha wow! and what do you mean all had to be repaired? is there a common problem with them going out? last i checked mine still seemed to work great. now im worried O_O and doesnt the link cable ONLY work with hyper fighting? I dont imagine the function was programmed into any released games.

I know it’s overkill. I don’t *have* to use VB parts. I just had a vision of an adapter that mated up with existing VB taps/packs because I have a few of them. I know it’s not as clean as some of the other designs that use 3rd party AC adapters. And who am I kidding that I’d ever use a battery pack? It was just my take on the project though.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating for anyone stabbing anyone in the back or betraying confidence. We are nothing if we don’t stand by our word. I just don’t understand the logic of it all. What game developer have you ever spoken with that doesn’t want their game enjoyed by as many people as possible? The whole thing seems strange. And who do we even ask for release permission? I guess some of you know this guy but I don’t get it. Four years ago he dips into the site for 3 months, makes less than a handful of posts, drops the most badass VB game around, then vanishes!?!? It sounds more like an “anon”ymous handle for another user or something to me.

I’m a have in this scenario since I was lucky enough to get the game. I too would not release the ROM if I were y’all or if I knew how to dump VB games. But I feel bad for the “have nots” in the community and it seems enough time has passed. It’s like locking the Mona Lisa in your basement. One day someone will sneak in a camera and show the world what they’ve been missing and it won’t be on the owners own terms. That’s the nature of the world we live in.

Count me in for whomever makes a CIB of the translation!

Right now Hyper Fighting is probably my most valuable game. If the ROM is released that might change overnight, but I don’t care about that. It seems like the community at large should be able to enjoy this game. Sure it would be through an emulator, but it is just that good of a game and Mednafen does a great job at 3D. One of the best games on the VB imho. It’s only a matter of time before someone produces another run anyway. The genie is already out of the bottle. But what do I know.

I actually happen to have a model of the battery pack slot (attached). I included an STL and the original SketchUp model. I’ve never printed it, so I don’t know if it’ll work as-is, but I used calipers to get the dimensions, so it should be pretty close.

I downloaded the SketchUp viewer utility and took a look. That looks like just what I would need, just with a box attached to the “back” of it (where the controller would be). I don’t have this capability though unfortunately.

Thanks @RunnerPack. It’s more like option B. No VB controller would be involved (other than the plug donor). A picture here may help. Below is a picture of my adapter. I went with a more modular approach than most. Basically, for power I have 2 alligator clips that clip to the positive and negative clamps of an AC adapter tap or battery pack. My thought was how can I make it most flexible (and yes, since I was a soldering novice I went ridiculously conservative with the cable lengths, maximizing everything to give room for error). It works quite well because the clamps hold on tight to the tap and aren’t very touchy.

So I got to thinking, how could I make it prettier. I got 2 ideas:

Option 1: Fit it in an adapter tap. If there is enough empty space, I could put the shrink tube portion inside the adapter tab and have 2 exit holes (one for the SNES connector cord and 1 for the VB connector cord), mount the switch to the case, and solder the power wires directly to the tap.

Option 2: If I could get a project box that would mate with an adapter tap (or battery pack) I could just put the internals in there, again with 2 exit holes for the SNES and VB cords, with the switch mounted to the box. That option requires a 3d printer (which I don’t actually have access to) but is the preferred option since it maintains modularity with regard to power source.

So one of my hopes was to find someone that had hopefully produced the controller-side interface and could basically put a printed project box around that interface.

My current adapter works just fine, so I know this is overkill, but that’s what nerds do best, right?

So guys, I’m guessing that we think we have likely found everything that can be unlocked in the game since thunder went as far as digging into the code? I wonder if the programmer would confirm nor deny this? Is he a member of the community?

Wow Ben! Thanks for all the info! I’m so glad that I asked because this turned out to be a really fun thread. Those pictures are hilarious and he did a great job! One of the truths of life: sometimes all you have to do is ask and you’ll get what you’re looking for.

Well you touched on everything I saw rumored online and them some. What’s this “Lucky” business all about though… hmm…
