Thanks for the help, you are an absolute lifesaver! I’ll hook it up to my scope tonight and see what it does!

That’s great! Glad to hear you were able to find/fix the problem! I was referring to very-VERY old posts with media like pictures and such not showing up, but after another look I found them like the newer-media bunched together in that new slideshow-like feature you implemented, which is definitely more aesthetically pleasing than having the pictures take up 10-pages-worth in length of posts by itself! Excited to see more additions to the site in the future!
Does anyone know how they even plan on distributing the VB release if the goal gets hit? I’m assuming it would just be a digital release like the game to play on emulators or a flash cart if you have one, and I’m guessing everyone gets one that donated enough to get the pc version? There isn’t much info on the part most people would be donating for. (Which I agree, it should have been a goal met for the funding goal, not as a stretch goal, which this and other factors are making me hesitate on donating)
It looks like it’s gone, as I can’t find it anywhere. I really enjoyed that feature and the checklists, but I know KR155E will be updating in the future, we just gotta give him time to add back some of the old-site features that people enjoyed. making a thread or poll of what people want added back might be a good idea to see what people want added back and what people didn’t care much for, I think that would probably be best in keeping the website enjoyable for everyone moving forward.
Or get someone to solder them for you, which NES Freak is pretty fantastic at (here’s a link:)
Virtual boy Permanent Solder Screen Professional Repair Service
If re-capping or soldering based on troubleshooting doesn’t work, then it may be an individual part going bad, but this is a lot less common and would take some more troubleshooting, but hopefully I could at least steer you in the right direction to go about fixing your VB! 🙂
(also apologies for multiple posts, but it won’t show up as one post like it used to, guess that’s a glitch with the new website)

It may also just be that both the LED’s in both eyes have gone bad, try putting in mario clash again and pushing buttons on the controller for a minute to see if the music changes. If it doesn’t, then it’s refusing to boot so it’s probably a capacitor that went bad, (could be something else, but probably a capacitor somewhere) BUT if you can go through the menus and hear the music changing and buttons being pressed, then it could be the LED’s going bad. It’s the most common problem with Virtual Boys, but also the easier fix. The ribbon cable is held on by glue instead of soldered to the LED board from the main motherboard, and overtime it seperates, so to fix it you’ll have to either solder the VB ribbon cable yourself if you have some solder experience (here’s a great video tutorial that I used to solder my VB eyes:)
Most likely problem is one of the capacitors throughout the virtual boy going bad, this is a common problem, and two of the virtual boys have had capacitors go bad in two different places from each-other. The older they get, the more likely they are to succumb to this problem, and luckily you can replace them opretty easily if you know how to solder. Console5 makes a complete re-cap kit with every capacitor to their specifications for replacing the entire console’s capacitors, which you can find here:

turquoise-colored VB for $295, looks like they did a pretty good coating job on it. I don’t know if other people’ll find it noteworthy but I think it’s interesting because of how few color mods I’ve seen of the VB; The only other I’ve seen being the “Virtual Girl.”

that’s pretty sweet! I might be interested in getting one of those for myself, especially since this is the only one out there now, and it looks great! 🙂

a single black line is a dead led on the board. its not your ribbon
I have a system that I got the permanent solder fix for about 4 or so years ago (by a skilled member of PVB, not some eBay hack) and it had worked fine but recently now has a single dead line in one display and I had been meaning to ask this too.
So it sounds like that LED board is shot and just needs to be replaced? (i.e. can’t be repaired somehow?)
Unfortunately yes, the LED’s on the board are so tiny, replacing it without a robot isn’t possible. If you want a new one, you’d have to get an additional VB unit, since you can’t get the actual LED board anywhere else. (I had to get another donor VB for this reason, but it’s not a bad idea for other replacement parts as well) I recommend buying a “broken” one so you can get a cheaper donor since the displays may only need soldered to be fixed most of the time.
depends on how destroyed it is, it still could be salvageable. if the LED board is still salvageable, you could wire it up physically with wires, which would work like a soldered VB, so it would last longer and keep it from having any display issues due to the glue originally used to keep the VB ribbon cable in place. Unfortunately there’s no alternatives to the LED board or LED’s, if that’s shot, you’d unfortunately have to get another whole VB unit for new LED boards to donor.
Here’s an article about alternatives to the cable, unfortunately RetroDan isn’t making replacement cables anymore to my knowledge, and there’s no guide on how to solder new wires up, but it can give you an idea on how it’s done:

Wow does that look beautiful, the sleek design definitely brings out the awesome lcd labels and looks so dang unique and incredible. Can’t wait to get this thing once it finally comes out (and the red board is a great touch) I’m glad things are still going along smoothly despite all the Covid delays. Looks fantastic so far!

Wow, no idea how I could miss that, I looked everywhere but the obvious, thanks for the reminder Thunder 😅
Back on topic, really looking forward to seeing the prototypes when they’re finally completed, can’t wait to see all the features and awesome additions you added Kevin, the flashing eyes on Do-Do are a great addition to the coolest multicart in existance 🙂
Speaking of discord, does anyone have a link to the planet VB discord? I somehow lost it since my link isn’t working and I can’t find a new link anywhere…
The carts are still coming along great, especially with all that’s going on surrounding the shops you’re using, which must be a huge pain to have to deal with, especially being out of everyone’s control. It looks great so far, and obviously no one’s expecting it on time due to these circumstances. It being late is completely understandable, and it at least gives some time to get the case designs you’re working on down, which look fantastic. Hoping the rest is running a little smoother for you through all this, and you can get enough progress done on everything that makes you happy. 🙂
I’d say that looks pretty good! It might need a few coats of solder and some time to rest (a few I did took up to three coats to have a good connection because of the glue) So I’d try a few more before giving up on it. As for the LED, the virtual boy is in desperate need of a replacement LED option. Once an LED goes bad on one, or gets lost/damaged, there’s no way to fix it unless you buy an entirely new console. As the LED’s are the most common part by far to go bad, creating a new one is a welcome idea, but would take machine-processed boards to assemble, and I guess the payoff and demand isn’t high enough to create something like this.
I’m not sure about the larger LED’s, they’re designed as the size they are to just fit on the mirrors, so multiple parts would have to be replaced to get larger LED to function properly, unless it did fit like you said might work. If one was made in the same size as the original however, there would definitely be an interest for them. (I’d buy some if they were available in a heartbeat)
Thanks for the updates over-time about the project, every update makes me that much more excited to see how all this will turn out. Take your time, getting something later in the best possible form is always better than getting it rushed out early. Looking forward to that first prototype!
Not anything new, but I missed this by about 30 seconds, and I am SOOO salty about it… Anyone else have a story of a crazy deal in the past they missed out on?
