I’ve gotta say, speaking of Jack Bros… I’ve been playing Persona 4 Golden, and it was pretty hilarious to see Jack Frost, et al in a completely different style of game. 🙂

I think I scored Space Squash a couple years back for $70 or $80 – great deal, it’s by far my favorite of the Japan-only releases (not that I’ve gotten a chance to play the “big 3” … but my FlashBoy’s on the way, hehe).

Agreed, that’s about as nice a box as I’ve seen.

I was just happy to finally cobble together a box, manual, and cart, although I did it over a handful of auctions… and even so, the box I have isn’t exactly in the best of shape, considering what I paid for it.

Congrats!

I had one of these, briefly, several years ago – the only games I ever got for it were NiGHTS (which came with it) and a Star Wars one that seems to have fallen off the planet… I think it was called Rebel Forces? It was a shooting gallery style game, and the cartridge art around the edges had pictures of Stormtroopers.

In any case, as a kid, I remember being pretty severely disappointed, after convincing myself that the system was going to be a lot cooler than it actually ended up being. It would be cool to dig it out again, though, for old times’ sake.

Possibly DS game cases? A while ago they re-released every Mario-themed DS game in a red box (in the US at least), so it was easier to spot “Mario” games on the shelf. (I think this coincided with the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which was also in a special red case.)

They look a little thin for that to be the answer, though. Very cool looking, whatever they are!

Edit: Got ’em! Check these out:

Thanks, Dor-Si! My Japanese collection is much more lacking, and hence out of frame. 😉 I’m working on it, though, with renewed effort!

Guys, we’re gonna need to make another repro CIB soon. My stacks are uneven. 😉

Edit: hmm, not sure why that’s coming through sideways. Sorry.

Keep up the good work, Tusk (and, of course, everyone else involved in these projects)!

If anyone’s still on the fence about a Bound High repro, let me re-emphasize how thrilled I am with mine. 🙂

No fear of that, the VB has been a pretty permanent fixture on my desk since I got it a couple years back. That won’t be changing anytime soon, especially not with new things to try out on it coming down the pipe!

It came at a pretty opportune time, though, as I’m in the process of moving my stuff into my fiancee’s apartment. 🙂 Hooray for transport!

Much as I’d like to think that, it’s really up to bigmak what happens at this point. I can’t fault him at all for wanting to avoid a potentially huge hassle and play it safe – at great personal loss, no less. He must have put a lot of thought into how to move forward – heck, he probably still is.

I always assumed stuff like that was Nintendo covering their butts with a warning label, and people over-reacting in the extreme (the game tells me I might get a headache, OH MAN I’VE GOT A HEADACHE NOW).

When I first showed my (very nearsighted) fiancee my 3DS, though, she complained almost immediately that it hurt her eyes to look at the 3D effect. I spent a while with her trying to help her find the all-important viewing “sweet spot,” and even once she found it, it was unpleasant for her.

Interesting article… although I think it might be a little premature to call the Vita a total flop, given that it’s still being sold and actively developed for. It hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, sure, but it’s building a respectable library.

I’d also never heard of the TurboExpress before… interesting stuff. I’m kind of a portable game aficionado… further investigation definitely required. 🙂

Dude, bigmak, what an incredible bummer for you… especially after everything you did to lay hands on the proto in the first place. The community at large thanks you a thousand times over.

There will always be those out there looking to ruin other peoples’ good times, though. I certainly can’t fault you for making the choice you’ve made, even if it causes the collector in me to weep a little.

I’ll certainly be donating, regardless, as thanks for the sacrifice you made. If there’s anything else I can do to help, say the word.

Quick question for Virtual Ben and thunderstruck –

Great work on the box art and label/logo! Just a couple thoughts – would it be possible to incorporate the logo into the box art rather than just having plain text? Also, the bullet points at the bottom – if this is meant for an actual boxed release, would it be better to put these on the back of the box? Having them on the front makes it a little noisy, aesthetically.

Just a couple thoughts. Keep up the awesome work!

I’m definitely in for this, as well. Just say the word when the gears are in motion. 🙂

I love the sudden surge in VB energy!

Congrats!

You did get a good deal on it – I managed to score my copy for $80 as well, but they’re frequently on ebay for $200-300, which is pretty outrageous given that it doesn’t actually seem to be all that rare (more in the realm of Virtual Fishing than, say, Space Invaders).

I’ll have to dust this one off and give it another spin… it’s been a long time. 🙂

Congrats, and welcome to the club!

Unfortunately, you’re not going to get a lot of answers to these questions, because no one really knows the full answer for certain. There are a lot of rumors floating around about these games, and not a lot of facts to back them up.

All we really know is that there are probably still prototype carts out there, since they were briefly demoed at shows, but whoever’s ended up with them isn’t talking. Even if they were, it’s unclear how far along in development they were – they’re likely unfinished, whereas Bound High! was close to completion at the time it was canceled. Dragon Hopper is probably further along than Zero Racers, just based on the comparative amount of information we have about both.

Just got my 2nd VB unit, to replace the one I had which was starting to have glitchy lines in the left display. 🙁

New unit’s serial number is: VN101687483 (USA)

I’d absolutely spring for a repro cart of this, it looks incredible! Great job!

Truly incredible news, and something I never thought we’d see happen. Put me down for a complete set!

This community truly goes to some great lengths to keep the VB feeling fresh. 🙂 Who would have thought that so many years later, we’d be seeing “new” releases again?!
