Actually you’re right. I remember that picture too, complete with the strange blurry rectangle above the cart and everything. If it is a typo and it’s $100..then I might actually be a little interested.
Haha yes! That blurry rectangle, I thought that was a half-assed Microsoft Paint censoring of something on the carpet, but I think it’s something plastic under the game. Maybe it’s that thing in Jack Bros level 3 or whatever that obscures part of the playing field 😉
Regarding availability, that makes sense about a small press but for such a good game, I don’t know why they do that. Must have been regional, my store in VT seemed like the first place the Jack Bros delivery truck stopped.
Based on pics and 3 seconds of gameplay I’ve seen of Dragon Hopper, I feel like that game has level design similar to Jack Bros…but you actively jump up and down to the different planes. Maybe?

While we’re on the topic of insanely over priced VB stuff:Holy crap, $1000 — and not even a box or manual! He’ll never sell it. I’m really glad I got both mine (w/o box, w/zeroxed manual) used, direct from Atlus. In the 90’s.
And now I can print a color manual from PlanetVB! 😀
Hmm, there’s something fishy with that Jack Bros. listing. I swear I’ve seen that cart for sale before, because I recognize the white carpeting it’s on haha. It was on eBay for quite a while, I believe in the $150-$175 range. The seller ID sounds familiar too. Hopefully it’s just a typo…
While I’m here, why is this game so rare anyway? I remember seeing a bunch of them at the KB Toys clearance sale, was it just a limited press??

What’s that case there KJ?? Looks like some fancy, color-matched homemade one 🙂And what is that giant Game Boy thing Arvester?
A quick Google of the number on there reveals it’s a generic case for AV equipment.
And that Gameboy display unit is awesome, Arvester. Want!
Hah, I was going to Google it but the tab was way over there and I was in a hurry O:)
And that Game Boy thing is awesome, how did you build it? Some kind of Super Game Boy mod??

I think it’s probably aimed more toward companies for advertising, trade-shows, etc. Although, no one’s stopping you from building your own and impressing the ladies at your next soirée 😉
Haha, that’s not a bad idea 0:). Kinda reminds me of Fry in Futurama, making 3D images with that Holophoner instrument to impress Leela.
Sadly I’ve wondered if the secrets would only be revealed once general interest dies down. If nobody is going crazy with anguish over these lost games, there’s no point in hiding the game to gloat. My hope is that the supposed owners would feel the urge to be the first to “donate” the ROMs. Would you rather sit on it forever or be canonized as the one who finally made the games playable to all? You can nurture a power-hungry mentality by being nice as much as you can by not giving people what they want 🙂

That’s pretty amazing! I haven’t had a chance to look up more information yet, but is it meant to be some fancy novelty you keep around your home?
As an audiophile and all-around snob too, I wouldn’t mind having some high fidelity recordings of all VB soundtracks. Jack Bros is one of my favorites to listen to, and surprisingly I think some of the tunes on Virtual Bowling and Virtual Lab were good. My iPod already has the Killer Instinct and Mario 64 soundtracks, wouldn’t mind a collection of two dozen albums by the artist ‘Virtual Boy’ either 🙂
I saw it in my old Nintendo Power magazines. In fact, that legendary issue (#75?) with the 3D cards was my favorite issue. Being a .poor farm kid in Vermont, I couldn’t afford one right away. My family gave me $100 for my birthday in mid ’96…by that time, KB toys had huge bins of VB stuff in the mall’s corridor. $25 per system…$5 per game, any game. I ALMOST bought Jack Bros because I loved the ghoulish artwork and storyline. “$5 for a cool looking game that I may never play? Sure!”. I remember holding a copy or two of the game, sealed, mint, only $5 each…then my stupid brother quoted some bad review and I scrapped the whole idea. My next crazy idea was to get an entire system’s library with console and AC tap for that $100, but I saved up for the N64 🙁
My first experience playing VB was the stand-up demo unit. The controller was like nothing I’d seen before, the graphics too.
The VB is stored up against my face with the power switch on 🙂
I keep a backup unit in my soft Performance bag in my game cabinet. My main one stays on my stand just sitting out in the open. I enjoy coming home and seeing it all ready to go. The backup backup one is in its box along with my other consoles.
I got that too 😮
It’s actually happened once or twice before since I joined last summer. I assumed it was some kind of server migration or site maintenance downtime.
What a shame, we had to kill time playing VB until it was back up 🙂
I got mine for about $55 CIB, near mint shape. It came from Australia so I think the exchange rate probably helped. But that was a lucky break since they usually go for more. If it makes you feel any better, I still haven’t found an affordable CIB 3D Tetris…
There actually is a conceivable way in which I could wire my drums into a VB controller to activate the various buttons.
Or, wire the VB controller into a drum module so each button plays a different sound/sample 🙂
When using the Nintendo stand, I can only play while lying on my back with the VB held on my face by gravity. Very rarely, I’ll go table-top style on my kitchen table, since it’s high and makes for a good angle.
Other times, I get tired of boring drummer practice routines and need a fun distraction:

For a quick/temporary fix, I’ve used a (black) zip tie before. The medallion has to be at least somewhat functional, but can still be badly cracked…open the stand’s legs to their intended position, and cinch the zip tie at the top of the legs just under the medallion. It keeps the legs from opening any further and worsening any cracks, plus the medallion keeps the tie from sliding up and out of a useful position.
Thanks, good advice everyone…I had a funny feeling about naming the output file after the emu., but when someone mentioned that in a post earlier I went and tried before reading how it messed up their program o:).
I could swear that I did get a padded ROM to work once or twice, but I’ll just learn to use the program right I guess haha.
So far I’ve played Mortal Kombat 2 and Super Mario Land 1. Did anyone get SML 2 to work yet? I see the gameplay demo come on, but get booted out of the saved file menu before I can play.
Has anyone else played Mortal Kombat on this? I would love to say I was the first person to do a fatality on the VB!
This is amazing! I, too, hope you keep working on this project. To some extent, I have lost interest in the GameBoy due to the overall color/graphics. But your emulator would make games playable again since sharp red and black 3D graphics are a HUGE upgrade.
Maybe someone can help me…I feel like I’m still doing something wrong with the setup. I’ve gotten it to work a few times, but it often happens that I get a 1MB output file, pad it to 2MB, and then the menu is blank once I get the loaded FlashBoy into my console. Last night, I tried using “>rominjector.exe gbemu.vb rom1.gb rom2.gb”, and I feel like that did in fact work. Then this morning, I had to re-download the program or it would say “0KB read, 65886 expected!” or whatever. Of note, when it worked last night, it WAS a 4MB file, and my FlashBoy would only flash to 50%…but the ROMs I had loaded definitely worked on my VB.
Last message, I promise 🙂
What about cutting a piece from this that will fit in the VB’s visor cavity:
Thinking about it now, do 3D glasses always have red on one particular side and blue on the other? I suppose having two left or two right lenses would work, but maybe one of each would look less goofy O:)
I was wondering about this possibility- you can buy super cheap 3D glasses (the old red ‘n blue ones) on eBay, for like $1 each. Could you theoretically splurge on two pairs of those, pop out the red lenses, and mount those over the VB’s eye openings instead of the originals? Like Morintari, I think the weird shape of the factory standard red lenses blurs the display somewhat for me. At least this would be a cheap, never-ending supply of replacements!
Also, my other plan is to experiment with a ‘vermillion’-lensed ski goggle (like: http://www.sporteyes.com/bolle-carve-ski-goggles.html ). Something tells me that mounting one of those could fix the “need visor!” issue, while replacing scratched lenses, and being very comfy as well :). Prescription ones can run like $70 +/-, but glasses users may like that option.
