That’s a great mentality, thunderstruck. Where do we ship the beer? haha.

I wish I could program for the VB (or anything). I’d happily do it for money, heh. One of these days I’ll have to try to learn…

IndieGoGo might be more suited to this case than Kickstarter — you can pretty much say “This is just to donate as a thank you for doing the legwork in getting the ROM.” and not have any rewards attached to it. You could *probably* coordinate the project with purchasing the carts, but I feel it’d be better to keep them separate and just let people either donate or buy through Uncle Tusk.

As for me, I’m in for the $200 donator’s copy. It’ll just be too cool not to have. 🙂

As for what ROM on what cart I’d be interested in, personally… I have no idea right now, haha. I’m torn. :p

Such a cool project! I’m totally going to check it out tonight when I get home. I really hope you do go the Donkey Kong ’94 route — having a huge, expansive game hiding behind an otherwise simple front is a fun trick. 🙂

Keep up the good work!

I know, I know – SUPER late to the game on this one…

Any of these still kicking around / available? I’m interested in a cart with label (don’t need box/instructions).

If not (which I assume is the case) then no big deal.

Thanks!

They’re not even listed on Uncle Tusk’s site (not even as “out of stock”; just gone), so I’d guess no. I’d wait for him for a definitive word, though.

Edit:// Actually, you might check out this thread

There are pictures of the prototype that Mr. G sent to DogP once.

And here is the front of the cart(first page of article scan), also a nice review. 🙂

Perfect! Thank you! It’s gorgeous. 😀

I absolutely love Galactic Pinball. The physics are a bit off, but since it’s a puck and not a ball, I let it slide. 🙂 It’s a lot of fun, though! I’ve played that more than any other VB game I own.

Wario Land is also very high quality. I really enjoyed it, but it’s been many years since I’ve played it. I think I should dust it off and go for the best ending. 🙂

I’ve had problems with dead SNES batteries, but never any leakage. I ended up buying a pile of sockets and CR2032 batteries so that I can make the SNES batteries replaceable… y’know, in 20 more years, when they’re dead again, haha.

I haven’t heard of any VB games with battery issues. I guess Warioland probably has a battery? Or did VB games save to some early version of flash? I imagine it’s battery-backed RAM of some variety, though…

I haven’t had any other consoles die due to bad caps, thankfully. I have a Game Gear, and last I tried it, it worked fine.

I don’t understand these people, if your not a fan of something why try mess it up for others (Not that they could anyway)? I’m not a big fan of PlayStation but if someone wanted to release a prototype of resident evil 1.5 or whatever else I would fully support them.
Silly people, still its all publicist I guess.
Sorry rant over.

Unfortunately, these are the sort of people who don’t give any thought to preservation of a legacy. They may not like the Virtual Boy (if they’ve even ever played one), but they don’t understand that ALL video games — much like books and movies and music — should be preserved.

There’s a section on Wikipedia for lost film and how people try their hardest to preserve every trace of film they can find. It always boggles my mind that people don’t care about our “heritage” when it comes to video games as well.

It can’t be Sunday soon enough right now!! Thanks for everything, man!

Heck yeah! I don’t know how much work it would take, but it would be really cool to be able to expand the game.

Okay, thanks to HorvatM and bigmak for testing this program. You guys rock!

First of all, the reason it wasn’t working right is because I typoed an instruction in the hex editor. I typed 00 02 where I should have typed 02 00. After fixing it, the program works great! I’ve attached the fixed ROM to this post.

Anyhoo, both users determined that the maximum effective brightness of the LEDs is in the neighborhood of 0x80; maybe a couple more, maybe a couple less. This is very important information.

However, I couldn’t get the math to line up. My current guess is that the maximum physical brightness of the LEDs is around 0x80, not that the emission period is necessarily saturated within the display period. I’m not really sure how to go about finding out, since by this point everything is hypotheical.

I apologize if I’m super off base here, but…

If it’s a timing thing, then one thing to consider might be the persistence of the human eye. The “refresh rate” of the human eye is on the order of 1/25th of a second. So if the light from the LEDs would need to be on for longer to create more brightness, the average human won’t see it.

Wikipedia article on persistence

This is fantastic news! Thanks to the both of you for doing this!

I’m 100% in for one of the regular carts. I’ll probably be be down for a donation cart instead once details emerge. I’d love to help support what you’ve done, but it’ll depend on when I get paid and what’s available, heh.

Super exciting! Not one but two “new” VB releases in recent memory! I love it!

I have at least two copies of Mario Tennis that I’m happy to donate for parts. 🙂

Looks fantastic! I can’t wait to get home and try it out. 🙂

If there’s a boxed release, I’m in. 😀

Just saw the Wired article and instantly ordered my copy via Uncle Tusk. I suspect my mailman will crush it into the mailbox, but I’ll hope for the best. Thanks to everyone involved for doing this! I sincerely appreciate a new reason to pull one of my VBs off the shelving. 🙂

I hope I was able to get an order in while there are still supplies! This is one of those little things that pops up to remind me: “You don’t check PVB enough these days!!!”

Also, if any more donor carts are needed, I think I have 4 copies of Mario Tennis these days; I’d be happy to mail a couple in.

I don’t remember if I’ve already replied to this thread or not… if there’s still a link cable up for grabs, I’d be in.

If not, oh well, I should visit more often, heh. 🙂

Greetings and welcome! I’m not exactly a regular around here but it’s always good to see new faces.

Good luck in acquiring the games you’re missing — I’m personally down to two or three games from a complete collection. I still need 3D Tetris, Panic Bomber and Jack Bros. I’d also like to add in a copy of Innsmouth no Yakata from the J-only side.

Enjoy your new purchase!

Two pics — one is a super-old one, but it has me with my Virtual Boy. I took it years ago when I got an order in from micromusic.net:

Here’s a few more recent ones:

Okay, I found out about these WAY too late. Are there any Flashboy’s still available? For how much? Where can I send money???? haha.

As far as I’ve ever discovered, the problem that causes the horizontal lines (and other corrupted display) has to do with the plastic ribbon cable connecting the ‘display board’ for each eye to the VB main processing board.

I took my two VB’s apart and I’ve got pictures, but my webserver is in a box at the moment so I can’t post them.

Basically, the cable is ‘glued’ to the display boards, and, over time, that connection wears away. I’ve heard about some people that have tried to warm up the connection to re-melt the solder and strengthen the connection, but I don’t know if anyone’s had regular success with it. Do it at your own risk, obviously.
