I just get a black screen on my VB when I try this on my Hyper Flash 32. Do I need to do anything special to get this to work on my cart?

Where does one get the printed inserts?

Speaking of the cases…are those custom VB cases?

Awesome! Thanks for the heads-up on this! I’m snagging one for sure.

Although the game seems to be working it also suffers from a lot of slowdown. Additionally, the sound is mixed really weirdly: the sound effects are loud while the actual music is barely audible. I was wondering whether these are regular features of the game or problems with the rom.

Not at all. This game is one of my all-time favorites, and I’ve never experienced slowdown or the audio oddities you mentioned. I played it only on real hardware, so yes either your emulator is having issues with the ROM, or your computer may not be sufficient for playing this game emulated.

Just put a very small “or” between the 5 and the 4 and you’ll be fine. 😉

Sounds like an interesting project though, seriously.

Cool, I can live with that. Thanks for the update.

Is this still something I could get in on? Do I just need to donate a cart? I’ve got one I’m willing to chip in, if that’s all I need to do.

I really just need to get a PCB laid out for it, but figuring out the mechanicals of making it all fit nicely into a VB without hand-wiring a bunch of wires is time consuming.

Who says it has to fit into a VB? 🙂

How about a prototype box that sits outside and connects into the needed places via some sort of cable? I’m sure any of us that love to tinker would gladly have an extra box connected into both our VB and TV and not give you any grief over it!

Feel free to save the internal mod for version 2 of the release once we’ve helped you get all the bugs out of it! 😀

Donation made (guess I should’ve mentioned my username in the donation notes…LOL)!

This is such a great thing you’ve done for the VB community! Hopefully this will inspire others who may be in a similar position with unreleased games (like G-Zero!) someday.

Thanks again bigmak!

The one thing so far I hold in great disdain about some of the games available for purchase on the 3DS is that the Super Game Boy features were stripped from games such as Game & Watch Gallery, Donkey Kong ’94, et al. Why is a brand new *3D*, *COLOR*, state-of-the-art system relegating these games which shipped originally with superior color palettes and audio to a dismal monochrome existence.

It just bums me that I can’t fully _replace_ my old games with these downloads because they are technologically inferior. I guess that isn’t going to be a problem for anyone who didn’t play those games originally on an SGB, but…I did…so…it bugs me.

*sigh* Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox now. Thanks for letting me inject a tiny bit of angst into this thread. 🙂

My experimentation with hex values was basically a failure. I just could not figure out what I was trying to accomplish. *sigh*

Turns out that the green/red combo on WiirtualBoy was pretty close, with only a little green visible through the red lens. I tried playing with changing the hue on the green in the custom color setting and using pure red for the other eye. Still, red was almost perfect but I could not get the right shade of green. So, instead of getting a neutral white image it was light yellow.

I could play Wario Land like that, but 3D Tetris’ increased depth of field was garbled because of the overlap.

I’ve ordered some plain red/blue glasses from DealExtreme. We’ll see how they do!

Thank you, Captain! 😉

I found a link there where they mentioned that you could set a custom color as well. So, I think I’ll play around online with one of those CSS/hex color code sites and see what colors these glasses I have equate to.

Some of the sites I have to use for work use ActiveX controls, which is a Microsoft-only thing. So, I have to keep an IE handy. On my Linux systems I either keep an IEs4Linux version installed or just run XP in a VM.

I’ve beaten it too! What a great game. I beat it on the normal difficulty, getting 100%, then on the harder difficulty also getting 100%.

It may be my favorite VB game. n_n

I have to agree with RunnerPack’s idea…for a freebie–or even a temporarily loaned unit–I’d be glad to test if it works under a few different Linux distros I use!

😀

Wow, awesome video! One question though, as it is hard to determine from the low-res vid: how is the framerate? Is it smooth enough to handle some of the blinking/flickering effects like in Teleroboxer? Just curious!

Hey DogP,

I’d be more than happy to ‘beta test’ any working version of your device to see how it performs on my widescreen 50″ TV! *puppy eyes*

I’d even buy the parts and build it, per your instructions, when you get to that point. I’ve had a ton of experience soldering and wiring up mods on equipment. I just don’t know the principles behind what I do, I suppose.

Anyway, let me know! I’d love to help!! 🙂

Hmm…it occured to me later that I meant AD724…not 714…sorry.

Thanks for the info on the prop, I’ll have to look into it. I know enough about these things to be semi-dangerous…wish I knew more… 🙁

The data sheet for the AD chip has a full schematic for creating a VGA->TV (NTSC/PAL depending on what crystal you use) conversion circuit. That model adapts well to arcade boards, and anything else that can output RGB. For that matter, if you can produce RGB, I suppose you could pump out the R and B as pure component video…somehow…maybe…

*crying uncontrollably*

*sniffle*
That hurt, man. You had me for sure…

So, what kind of chip are you using to get the video out? I’ve played around with Analog Devices’ AD714 chip, as it is apparently popular for using to adapt RGB video from arcade games to both NTSC and PAL formats. It also puts out both composite (which is visible in your *FAKE* screenshot…) and S-Video.

If you had two of your circuits in place (1/eye)and output the signal from one eye into the R channel of the chip’s RGB input, and the other eye into the B channel…wouldn’t that give you instant R/B 3D? I dunno…just musing…

Anyway, I’m game if you need a hardware beta tester!!! 😀
