-2048 unique graphic tiles in memory at once, used by:
–1024 simultaneous 8×8 pixel sprites, no scanline limitations
–32 backgrounds (up to 4 less if all sprites are used)
-Backgrounds are also often used as huge sprites themselves, since they can be moved around freely in relation to each other…
…As you can see, the tile/sprite engine is pretty generous on the VB, compared to NES/GB.
Thanks Dan!
So, just to be clear does that mean you can have 32 backgrounds in place simultaneously, or stored in banks?
Is there really no limit to the amount of sprites on screen at once? 1024 seems a hell of a lot considering the resolution! 🙂
Is the 32 BG rule for memory banks or simultaneously?
Thanks again for answering here, this is really appreciated and I hope to have something to show for it quite soon…
I picked a 300w step-down up from Maplins earlier today, they have them for £24.99 or you can get a much smaller one (that was always fine with my famicom) for I think £14.99.
Where did your hear that? Being on VB forum I wouldn’t get that one if I were you.
Just trying to help you make a decision without actually saying anything concrete.
I’m personally not fussed about Faceball because it’s on a bunch of other platforms and I can basically imagine it being in black and red with bad 3D easily enough.
Dragon Hopper is a little different, because it looks like it could be special, but if the owner of Faceball wouldn’t consider dumping it for a reasonable amount then I wouldn’t waste time with that kind of personality.
Figured I’d add my name on twice as I guess this is a one shot opportunity and I try to get one for use and one for wen the Queen comes round as a rule. Why not here.
Not sure if these will be numbered or not, but I’ll grab that 20th slot either way. We are 8 short right now, so we’re well on our way.
For the ROMs to be released we’d need o cast the net wider than just on here, but with the aid of some Gameboy, NES and Super NES communities it could be done if people chucked in $50 each.

I played through Earthbound “Zero” on a GBA flashcart many years ago. Yes it’s absolutely not a legal form of ownership to own one and especially not legal to manufacture them. However, it’s a great game and Nintendo did no justice by canning the release and never offering an official alternative.
There is no legal way to own this game. Even if you shell out over 1k on eBay when an offifial proto pops up, it’s PROPERTY of Nintendo or the developers.
All in all, Mother 1/NES Earthbound is one of the top 10 games ever made for the console. Fans have screamed bloody murder for at least a decade to get this released, but it seems that Hal and Nintendo don’t want our money.
Legality is never black and white and is always shades of grey. This particular issue is a light grey, because the game is in the public domain and Nintendo would have to wrestle to prove that the extra content is also theirs (the code base obviously is) and what’s more, the NES repro guy is charging for parts and labour.
It’s about as illegal as jay-walking I’d say.
Nintendo make it a policy not to chase after and punish fan activity like this. It all enriches their name and community and is not deriving them of major income, so please don’t feel like their seething at the thought of this. They didn’t want to invest in it themselves because Earthbound is NOT massive in the West despite what teh internetz would suggest – but they’re certainly not going to shut anyone down over it.
By the way, I don’t know if these will be numbered so I didn’t want to set a precedent, I just like the number 7.
In fact, I switched places with someone at the Wii launch event years ago so that I coiuld be #7 even, I’m that sad.
I said previously that I could order two so I might do that after the list fills out a bit.
I can’t commit yet so won’t add my name twice until I’m sure.
