i’m pretty sure that was the displayed i used at toys r us, it had mario tennis on it. i remember it being really small just like that.

auction shows, picker shows, pawn shop shows, they are all the rage now. the history channel, spike, discovery channel, and more all feature shows about finding and selling things. i’ve been a thrift store shopper for years and have watched prices sky rocket in the past 3-5 years. at one point you could pick up a genesis with a few games for under $5. now its hard to find a genesis (with everything needed to play) for under $20.

I try to keep in mind that all the kids who didn’t care for their stuff are now in the late 30s and looking to buy those experiences back

i think these things have been the driving force behind the recent vb console price hike. to cash in right now you would need to sell systems with ribbon repairs. i say “cash in right now” because i don’t think this is going to last. in another 10 years we will have the later generation buying up stuff and they aren’t going to care about the same systems the generation before them did. however, by the time we reach this point we will have less systems in excellent condition to trade and sell.

as for packaging, i can’t agree more. i was a gold lever power seller on ebay for a few years. every single feedback i received was almost always directly related to my excellent packaging. i can’t understand how someone can ship something as fragile as the vb by simply stuffing it into a box. it is so important to ask sellers how they package before you buy. i’d rather pay over my budget if it means i’ll get what i paid for in the condition advertised.

the vb is the perfect system for homebrew. there are so many things yet to be discovered. the vectrex now has more completed homebrew games for it than were retail releases. i hope one day the vb has the same.

good luck with your project!

i wish i had not found this thread. i am going to be that person who complains that everything is just crazy!

4. E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial (Atari 2600)
We know it’s legendary awfulness

i love ET. it puts all the important aspects of the movie into an incredibly tiny package. the game is challenging, but yet easy to beat. the only annoying thing are the pitfalls everywhere, which can be avoided once you learn the maps. really, i don’t see what the bid deal is.

5. Peek-A-Boo Poker (NES)
As with “Hot Slots” X rating doesn’t mean a damn thing, it’s just poker and nothing more exciting than that.

sure it is just poker, but it has nudity! remember this is the NES. it had to be an unlicensed cart to get away with it. its also not a half bad game, if poker is your thing.

Dragon’s Lair Arcade
Unplayable. A guessing game.

you have to remember when it was released that it attempted to do something that had not been done before. its a game of memorization. are you saying memorization isn’t a valid gaming tool? not liking the game mechanics doesn’t make it unplayable. if it was so unplayable i hardly feel that it would have been ported to so many systems (dos, mac, cd-rom, dvd, 3d0, gbc, ps3, wii, dsi, android, etc).

Dragon’s Lair (NES)
Awfull game and hard as possible, I couldn’t get past the first screen.

its a fairly challenging game but its not horribly bad. i wouldn’t say its awful by any means. its not cheetahmen II for example.

Adventure (Atari 2600)
Can’t get a more boring of an adventure than this.

what are you comparing it to? adventure is a classic example of a simple adventure game done right. its so extremely basic yet it offers weapons, hidden objects, puzzles, enemies, and even the 1st easter egg.

there is even a great homebrew sequel of it for the 5200.

Milon’s Secret Castle (NES)
Way too difficult and play control needs improvement.

milon’s secret castle is full of secrets. the core of the gameplay is taking the time to discover secrets. the rest is understanding where to go next. all-in-all it isn’t an extremely long game, perhaps you should give it another play? its like most games of that era, they weren’t polished multi-million dollar games made by teams of 200 with credits that scroll for 15 minutes. you have to give them some leeway for their minor flaws.

Rambo (NES)
Zelda 2 rip off.

ok, so character sprites and movements resemble zelda II. but how can you call it a zelda 2 rip off? it is nothing like zelda 2. its just another side scrolling adventure game. you could list any number of games with similar styles of play and call them zelda 2 ripoffs by those standards. with that said, i rather enjoy rambo. i own it on cart and have beat it countless times over the years. it isn’t the best rambo title ever released but its still a great adventure game with plenty of exploration.

eBay has been offering free listings all summer long. you could list it at buy-it-now and see what happens. if that doesn’t work out, list it again at an auction price, again for free.

if the timer ran out, then you were waiting until the last second to snipe the bid? that’s the game you play if you wait, you have to hope that the ISP is working, the pc doesn’t mess up, nothing is lagging, etc. -=P

i missed a few vb auctions and then ended up grabbing one that was easier to win. the one i finally got wasn’t very good, and i regret how much i paid for the item i received.

are you talking about the IPD slider? or do you mean that you bumped the mirrors or something? i haven’t taken my vb apart so i’m a bit confused as to what you are experiencing.

if you are talking about the IPD slider, it is never perfect for me. i can’t get both sides to be perfectly in focus but that never affects gameplay for me. i’m sure the issue has to do with my eye sight and my corrective lenses.

Do you have a fix now for that, or did the problem go away with the fixing of the cables?

i never did take the time to build a tool to take apart my VB. i’ve had a great offer from TheForce81 as well, and i know in my heart that i should take him up on it but i just haven’t found the time to grind down a bit.

i also kind of want to buy a brand new VB for the repair. the one i have does have some minor scratches on the red plastic lenses that cause a few black lines to appear in front of my eyes. i know its the plastic because the lines move as my eye moves, and i wear corrective lenses so i’m use to spotting that type of stuff.

there was one discussion here about trying to manufacturer some custom lenses, perhaps out of glass. i always hoped that they would actually be developed. right now i am considering trying to track down a perfect set of red lenses and then to bug TheForce81 for some of his free time =)

thanks for making a post here, seeing this old thread posted in makes me want to get off my butt and figure out what to do. the great thing about the permanent fix is that if the vb dies i can always buy a new one and swap in my perfectly repaired cables =)

I love 3D! I also love the history of this system.

The Virtual Boy embodies everything I enjoyed about gaming while growing up. From the graphics to the sounds, every VB experience for me has been exciting.

I also think that the Virtual Boy is the system with the most potential. There is unlimited possibilities for Homebrew, and hopefully someday we will see hundreds of completed games available for the Virtual Boy.

this would be about $22 USD?

this is a prime example of how awesome this community, and the people involved with it, actually are. now please dump it so we can all enjoy your b-day present! =P

i should have written this reply much sooner, i apologize for that.

richard ended up replacing the usb connector, just in case that was the issue. he kept me informed during each step of the process. i received the cart back and flashed a bunch of things to it without issue.

thanks mate! =)

that turned out REALLY nice. i wish i had one!

its fun to repurpose something for your own needs. a way to better organize your personal collection. wehile ds cases could serve to solve a problem they will always be ds cases. something about sliding a vb game under the manual clip seems cheap and uneventful to me. i would much rather see classic 1-off carts distributed with a box from their era, regardless of the difficulty involved with doing so.

If they have any extra free time, they listen to hip-hop

i’ve been listening to indy, underground hip-hop, and groups that are now much bigger, for going on 20 years. i listen to hip-hop from all around the world and i did it before it became something “cool” to do. Hip-hop makes up a majority of my listening time (about 8hrs a day) but I also enjoy Jazz, Blues, Metal, Funk, R&b, Chiptunes, Folk, etc, etc…

i am also an avid homebrew proponent and a collector of classic video game experiences.

i don’t appreciate it when a genre of music is grouped with the undesirable actions of a few. the modern “rap” music that plays on the radio is not hip-hop. hip-hop is something that a large majority of kids these days do not understand, appreciate, or are even aware exists.

i am very happy to read that you are still working on this project.

cheers!

rayman 3d is a port of the dreamcast game, so if you played it there you have played it before. the game is fun but the graphics look dated.

steeldiver was one of the worst games i got to play at the 3ds launch party. its just a gimmick filled game that use some of the unique features of the 3ds (like the gyroscopic controls). its not fun at all.

sf iv is fun but its hard to keep the 3d sweet spot with a fighter. its also a fighting game, so playing it alone gets boring pretty quickly.

the zelda remake doesn’t offer anything new (well retextured graphics that they claim were built from the ground up for the 3ds) but its a classic zelda game. if you have never experienced it then give it a play.

the new starfox is fun. i haven’t put many hours into it but i’ve enjoyed it.

pilotwings greatly expands upon the wii mini-game but the world feels dead. there are no moving cars, people, etc. its just basically an expanded mini-game. its great in small doses but not worth the asking price. i picked it up for $5 at a online sale and sort of even regret that price.

kid icarus is getting good reviews, but i’m not sold on it yet. some are saying its the best title to be released so far. it might be worth checking out.

mariokart 7 is really fun, especially if you play online.

don’t forget the e-shop titles and virtual console. there are some fun games you can grab there but do your research. some just aren’t very fun with the 3ds circle pad.

metal gear solid 3d got some really bad reviews. poor graphics and difficult controls among the complaints. but i’ve been told the 3d effects are pretty nice, you feel like you are in the jungle.

i am not an expert on the hardware, but i am pretty sure it isn’t outputting video. the 2-player connection plug was designed for 2 virtual boys, its a link cable.

that version is the same as the retail, correct? there was nothing different about the ROM?

i assumed that one might overwrite the other and that applying both would break something. i applied the level patch first and then the control fix patch. i now have the best of both worlds! =)

thanks for the suggestion
