Earlier this week I found a Game Gear Soft Check cart at a thrift store. Supposedly this cart can check/test various things in the Game Gear like the speakers, contrast, buttons, V-RAM, etc. However, I’m unable to get it to pass the first test which appears to be a COMM Port check since I don’t have a Game Gear Link cable (I think Sega called them Gear-to-Gear cables). Not that I’m really in a rush to get one at this moment though; the Game Gear was never really a console I had much interest in due to its size, capacitor leaking issue, and that Sega never made a Super Game Boy equivalent for the Game Gear.

I kinda wonder how this cartridge got to my neck of the woods. Maybe someone in my area used to work at Sega or something? I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence or maybe from the same person, but the same thrift store had a Genesis 2 in box the other week too that was still in pretty good condition.

This guy is the Game Wave Entertainment System, made by Canadian company Zap-IT! Games in 2005 and cancelled in 2009. About 13 games came out for it and was also a DVD player. I have two, this one doesn’t have a working DVD drive and a boxed one.

Funnily enough, I saw one of these things at a local used game store last week; I thought it was a Nuon at first.

I don’t have any prototypes but I did manage to find an old Nintendo Roulette game from the mid 60s and a trophy for selling SNES/Genesis copies of Primal Rage. Other than those two items, I have a Mattel Microvision, the rumble pak version of Super Mario 64, and a Chinese bootleg version of Dragon Ball Z: Goku Hishoden for the Game Boy.

The save battery in VB carts seem to be the same as GB, GBC, & some GBA carts, meaning that they are soldered to the board by the tabs. Looking at my VB Wario Land cart, it seems to use a CR 1616 battery for saving which can be harvested from either another VB cart or GB/GBC/GBA cart that has as a save feature. Some Game Boy carts use a CR 2025 battery saving (like the Pokemon games), so it can be a little tricky to find the right size battery to harvest and most GBA games that have save feature use flash storage rather than a battery.

Or you could find replacements on places like eBay with the tabs already in the battery, so all you’d need to do is a quick and careful solder job https://www.ebay.com/itm/10X-CR1616-SAVE-BATTERY-REPLACEMENT-W-TABS-GAMEBOY-COLOR-GBA-ADVANCE-POKEMON/262357234778?hash=item3d15b5b45a:g:GWQAAOSwRLZT-mfn

Finished making the rest of the boxes. Posted a video of them on my twitter

Was a fun little project to do and I like it a little more than how I was storing my handhelds carts earlier; in a binder.

Bought some card stock paper and printed color versions. Since I didn’t have a laminate machine thingy I used a bit of packaging tape as a substitute. Got 8 done so far and they turned out nicely 🙂

Made a test version. Couldn’t really find any GB box scans so I went to CoverProject and fit scans made for DS cases onto a GB box template. It’s made of standard printer paper so the box is flimsy, but the cartridge and case fit nicely into it. Although I want to fix some things like how the spines look, I like how it turned out. Not sure if I’d want to make roughly 70 of these boxes for my games though as that’d be a lot of time and printer ink.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Just to clarify on my first post, I’ll happily take any GBC & GBA recommendations too.

In that case…

For GBC:

-Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong
-Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 or 2 (if you like Pokemon)
-Mario Tennis
-Mega Man Xtreme 2
-Metal Gear
-Pokemon Puzzle Challenge

-Asterix & Obelix XXL
-Slime Morimori: Dragon Quest (recommend playing a DS game called DQ Heroes: Rocket Slime first)

-Mole Mania
-Zoop
-Mario’s Picross
-Picross 2

Strange … it’s working on my new 3DS (with system software version 11.4). Region settings doesn’t seem to be the problem – all 4 videos are available worldwide, my Youtube account says.
– Which 3DS system software are You using?
– Did you try other Youtube/Youtube3D videos?
You can find more 3D videos here: https://www.youtube.com/user/3D

I’m using a New 3DSXL with version 11.5.0-38U. I was able to watch the 3D videos you linked no problem along with VectrexRoli’s 3D videos.

Youtube 3D unfortunetly sucks since it was last “updated” – for me (firefox v.54 on windows) it only works with red/green glasses and I also have to flip them. It doesn’t support my 3D monitor any longer 🙁
Luckily, it still works on the Nintendo 3DS! Not in the official YouTube app though (that also sucks) but in the 3DS’ built-in internet browser (you probably have to adjust the 3D settings).

Looks awesome! Unfortunately I couldn’t watch the video on my New 3DS (clicked on the large parallax version along with the others, but all of them said “this video is not available.”)

There’s a thread on the site that might give you some ideas: http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=37056

Thanks for sharing the video! Didn’t know this trophy was given away as a prize for selling a bunch of SNES/Genesis versions of Primal Rage.

I like your idea for storing Virtual Boy games. It’s not as fancy but I keep mine in an old Game Boy binder along with Game Gear games.

I was initally fooled by this too. Was going to post this a few weeks ago, but noticed that the date of the review was April 1… 😛

Awesome stuff! Thanks for posting them!

Another underrated game that I forgot about is Mole Mania on the Game Boy.

I love how unique MMV is on the Game Boy! Gonna have to look into overclocking it though haha, I played for the first time in a while recently and forgot how bad the slowdown is. Also not a fan of Dr. Light being so passive-aggressive by expecting Mega Man to fight off Wily’s robots but still making him save up to buy his own weapon/suit upgrades :p

Is Wiz n Liz a kiddy game? I almost bought it since some of their characters make a cameo in the mighty Puggsy game, but thought it looked questionable in terms of enjoyability…

It’s hard to describe what Wiz n Liz is. It sort of reminded me of the 1983 Mario Bros. game but with many diverse levels and weird looking bosses. It may be worth looking up a gameplay video to better see what it plays like.

-Wiz n Liz
-Mega Man IV and V Game Boy
-Mega Man X6
-The Mario Picross games
-Most Virtual Boy games
-Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

What an oddly specific thing to get stolen. Something like amiibos I can understand since they’re high in demand and are recent, but a handful of homebrew carts for a 20 year old console that’s not very loved with a niche audience doesn’t seem like the thing someone would say “yeah, I’m gonna steal that.”

Regardless, sucks that this happened. Hope this doesn’t happen again.
