Dying to buy this as soon as it drops! Been scouring the local area for a long time to get VB games but no such luck, the joys of not living in the US or Japan 🙂

Sorry to bump a dead thread but any scope on 3d printing the controller’s shell at some point? I accidentally dropped mine onto the carpet today (not a hard surface but still), the controller is fine but I’d like to be prepared for the future just in case!
Thanks.

Hi I had a similar issue with mine, taking it apart the first time was a real pain and I also dug into the black posts. Don’t worry, the case can take a beating and it’ll survive.
Gamebits can still be removed fairly hassle-free even if they’re stripped simply due to the number of grooves on them, so the fact that yours aren’t coming out just means time’s taken its toll on them and nothing more. I’ve had the exact same thing happen with a Game Boy and ultimately I just tore off the back shell (had no other choice).

One thing I’d recommend is to see if you can use a small rotary drill and cut a flathead-style notch into the screw, then try to use a flathead to taken them out if you can. That’s only really plausible for the ones underneath the cartridge slot though.
Have you tried using some WD40 to lubricate the posts/screws, waiting a bit then trying to take them out? Might take some torque but that could work.
Alternatively if you have a fine and long enough solder tip then perhaps soldering a long gamebit screwdriver onto the screw and then attempted to unscrew could work. You’ll have to sacrifice a screwdriver though.
And my final thought is that sometimes screwing then unscrewing works. It seems counterintuitive but occassionally it comes through. Using epoxy resin on the screws for the sacrificial screwdriver method can be a possibility, but I’d be careful with that stuff.

That’s all I can think of, but good luck! I hope everything turns out alright, and also welcome to the community!

Just want to write about my experience with TheForce81, as I sent my displays to him to be solder repaired over the holidays and they have been fully fixed! Extremely cooperative and nice guy, he kept in regular contact with me, and I appreciate him holding on to them for a while. The work done was very rapid and high quality, and the dispatch was quick so I got them back in no time.

I really want to commend this guy for doing brilliant work for this community, he even helped guide me through the process of putting them back in and having to adjust them (which thankfully wasn’t necessary). Thanks a lot Force81!!

Hi sorry to bump an old thread but what screws does it controller use? I know they’re both Phillips head ones, but the ones inside my controller have become slightly stripped and corroded from being kept in a rough state for 20+ years. I recently cleaned my controller and that’s why I ask.

Hi RunnerPack, thanks for the ideas! Will apply that ABS ring as that seems like the best bet for me, though I doubt any force I could apply could possibly be the straw that breaks its “back.”

Yeah I’ll send some photos, those are the ports I’m referring to.

Don’t know if this is the right place to ask but is there anyone who has a 3d model of the actual shell of the Virtual Boy anywhere? Mine seems to have some (currently) superficial stress fractures that I don’t like…

Hey man would you be willing/able to build one of the VB USB adapters to send to the UK? This thing is awesome and like the OP said, I do also believe that the VB controller is the best one out there – people knock the ergonomics of the console itself but they struck gold with this controller, it’s so comfortable.
