The software I use for this is Virtual Boy Development Environment (VBDE) – which actually is a developer software, but I can use KR155E’s Stereo Viewer template without any programming skills. So this may not be the handy tool you have in mind, but it’s a nice workaround that works pretty well for me to visualize 3d images on the VB harware.
In consultation with KR155E, I’m going to post his Stereo Viewer template in a couple of days, along with a step-by-step guide on how I’m using it …

In my (old) 3DS XL (11.4) browser however, I couldn’t even open Youtube. It always times out when trying to open the link and I get an error regarding the page’s size.
Interesting – I get the same error on my OLD 3ds, but I thought it’s due to it’s very outdated system software (which I didn’t want to update yet for testing reasons).
So, looks like the OLD 3ds’ browser isn’t able at all to open youtube pages anymore …
I have two Euro NEW 3ds, both playing the 3d version correctly.
And one Japanese NEW 3ds that doesn’t load the Youtube page with an error message in Japanese (which I can’t read) that redirects me to a help page on nintendo.co.jp …

OK, thanks for the info! Happy to tell that 11.5 isn’t the problem – still runs on my new 3DS XL (EU) after updating
I’ve made a new ‘offtopic’ thread (including a poll) and suggest to continue the discussion on Youtube 3D problems there:

How much did you pay StereoBoy?I paid around $85.
Wow – that must be some days ago …
Actually, I’m ashamed to tell … 😉
It definetely was too much for a video game (knowing that poverty is a major problem to the inhabitants of planet earth). But anyway HF is also an awesome “document” to me as a 3D stuff collector, showing what communities are able to do with an underrated 3d device.
I also argued to myself, I’d be able to sell it later for the same price – so the money would have been more like a deposit. But I don’t want to sell it anyway … 😛
And finally, it also was my birthday when I bought it. And I had worked very hard on differen’t things the weeks before – so I consider it as a gift to myself 🙂
I also do regulary donations for non-profit organizations … so, conscience washed clean again, haha … 😉
I doubt that I will invest a similar sum again for a game … well – but maybe to support an upcoming, awesome homebrew project …? 😉
I think, that would be more reasonable …

However just to let you know that through ProMotion NG “smart drawing” by drawing curves you can do real 3d animations, and game graphics without the need of modeling in 3d or rotoscoping.
I know – You already showed me  🙂
I surely will use it when a find some time to do some 3D pixel art!

Strange … it’s working on my new 3DS (with system software version 11.4). Region settings doesn’t seem to be the problem – all 4 videos are available worldwide, my Youtube account says.
– Which 3DS system software are You using?
– Did you try other Youtube/Youtube3D videos?
You can find more 3D videos here: https://www.youtube.com/user/3D
Oh my gosh – this is cool! And is Bad Apple in 3D?

Same here. I paid a crazy price for the CIB. But I don’t mind, as I know where the money went. And if it’s becoming available more easy soon, I could even afford a multi player copy  😀

I don’t need to know this. I don’t need to know this. I don’t need to know this. Oh come on, please – what is it??
Does it have to do with that hidden content patch?
Pleeeaaase! 😉

Looking at the final ROM, I think KR155E’s idea to port it to VB was a very good one. I wouldn’t have had that idea my self – one reason is, I wouldn’t have expected that it’s possible to play video sequences on a nintendo device of that age (even if it’s just 5 fps).
Another reason is, I wouldn’t have expected that the drawing style of DKS still looks good in VB format – too low resolution and too few colors for the drawing details, I would have thought. But viewing the first test images, I was suprised how nice it looks.
I really think 3d is a main reason, why these images still look so nice in lower resolutions …
Thanks for your feedback, everyone! Very glad you like it. Seems like the good old DaumenKinosaurier is in good hands here 🙂

How ever did you do this just by drawing freehand?
KR155E wrote:
Check the About pages in the demo, they explain how the graphics were done. It’s actually rotoscoped 3D models.
That’s right – rotoscopy does the trick, combined with 3d animation. I didn’t want to make the release post too long, so I referred to the YouTube description. But of cause that’s the interesing part to the graphics people, so here’s some more detail:
1. 3D ANIMATION
The first step was, to create the complete animation with a 3d cgi software and render out a 2D draft image sequence (without caring for final textures or shading).
2. ROTOSCOPING
Then you can use these draft renderings, to redraw them by hand. Still in 2D, but you consider to draw some hidden layers in the background separately for regions that later may be revealed by parallaxe.
3. STEREO RENDERING
Finally, you map these drawings back into your origin 3d cgi scene. You’re using the camera (same one that rendered the drafts) as a projector for the hand drawn textures. Then just pin some shifted cameras (or a 3d camera) to your projector to finally render out all the desired stereo views … that’s it!
Wow – that’s amazing! I knew about the sega 3d glasses, but not the famicom ones.
I didn’t even know about “Famicom Grand Prix” – the artworks for “3D Hot Rally” are very nice!
Looks like Mario Kart began on the NES – in 3D!!
Thanks!
Thanks! You do a lot of Japanese translation – can you tell me, if the Japanese lines on the box draft make sense?
I just used google translator (and Japanese wikipedia) to get them … 😉

Youtube videos don’t work
Youtube 3D unfortunetly sucks since it was last “updated” – for me (firefox v.54 on windows) it only works with red/green glasses and I also have to flip them. It doesn’t support my 3D monitor any longer 🙁
Luckily, it still works on the Nintendo 3DS! Not in the official YouTube app though (that also sucks) but in the 3DS’ built-in internet browser (you probably have to adjust the 3D settings).

a larger Flashboy
I actually heard some very exciting rumors about a bigger flash cart lately! I don’t know any details or who’s developing it, but I believe we can look forward to some bigger content on VB in the near future  🙂
If I understand you right, I’d love to see it realized too. But it seems to me, you’re mixing up three different topics?
– Anaglyphs (color-composited 3D images for the corresponding 3D glasses)
– 3D conversion (converting a single 2D image to a 3D image = recontructing a second 2D image from slightly offset perspective)
– image-to-ROM converter for VB (merging left and right 3D image files into a Stereo-Viewer-ROM for VB)
I’d totally support the last one – and KR155E already provided me a nice workaround for this: a template project for VBDE 1.2.0, in which I can replace placeholder images (a fixed count of three images) with my own 3D images and then follow some easy steps to compile them into a ROM and finally browse them on VB – with zero developer skills 😀
KR155E also told me, that he will include an improved “stereo viewer template” in the upcoming release of VBDE
I guess, this is what you’re looking for too? If you already want to try this workaround with the current VBDE version, I could post the current stereo viewer template with a little step-by-step guide …

Also, is anyone doing any VR development?
I’m a 3d artist, not a developer, but with Unity I got my first simple VR scene working on my CV pretty easy, I find 😎
And of cause the edge connector game cards as well as the adapter itself could also be nicely designed 3d printed collectibles, to gather support for this solution …
And how about 32 MBit FlashBoys for the “NEXT GEN” Virtual Boy games? 😀
MineStorm wrote:
A solution would be for every VB user to have an adaptor. It converts the VB connector into a standard edge connector.
That’s an interesting idea. I think, it’s actually close to the Flashboy with the difference, that you wouldn’t always have to flash over again to change a game and the collectors also would have a nice game cart to collect. I would definetly support that …
Another idea: CIB-releasing homebrew games on “Special Edition” FlashBoys. So it actually would be a Flshboy+ that you could re-use for other games, but you’ll get it with a game pre installed – “FlashBoy+ Zelda Edition” for example. It would come with a nice Zelda box, manual and special cart sticker on the Flashboy. It could also be 3d printed in a certain edition color and with the game title engraved …
Of cause, you’d still need to harvest game cart connectors for both – Flashboy and edge adapter – but I think it’s a step more “sustainable” to produce adapters or more FlashBoys (that are both flexible) instead of locking the connectors to fixed game carts.
So maybe FlashBoy Special Editions could be a compromise too between CIB collecting and saving game connectors …?
… collectors vs. connectors … 😉
You’re welcome 🙂
@KR155E: If you’ve already an older version of VBDE installed, can you just install the newer one to the same directory or is it better to first uninstall the older one?
EDIT: Oh, I see – you just unzip the archive to a folder named “vbde” – that’s easy
