Neat! Some to add to the “unconfirmed” list. I did a reverse-image search and found https://www.reddit.com/r/TigerElectronics/ …which appears to be a subreddit made by some guy only to try and find people to sell him their Tiger electronics, with posts for all of those renders. Unfortunately no info on where the images came from.
Who’s the yo-yo who made that pic on Wikipedia WITHOUT DILIGENTLY STUDYING THE MANUAL???
Looks great! Glad to see the ESRB gave it a K-A rating. 😀
Anyone who can do the standard solder fix should be able to re-attach the cable to the board, and solder it.
Yeah, very similar to AVGN, “these games are good, but they’re on VB, so they’re bad!” That drives me batty because any console in the world is only as good/bad as its library. So yeah, I see that the VB has a small library, and that’s bad, but both Scott and AVGN are guilty of saying that certain games are good “except” that they’re on VB. Uhh, good games = good console.
Obviously anyone who instantly gets a headache is going to dislike the VB no matter what, and I get that. I guess I’ve never had a problem with headaches or anything, and I’ve played VB for some long periods of time. People complain about the 3DS too, and I always play that with the 3D turned all the way up, every time. So I guess I don’t know what I’d think of the VB if it made me nauseous.
I’m also a huge Game Boy geek, so the pixely monochrome and relatively simple games are right up my alley.
As far as the “quirky” comment: anyone who has put time into playing their VB, and not for the purpose of telling someone else about it, is not trying to be quirky. It’s funny that he brings that up when he himself owns so much of the library, and obviously isn’t a fan of the console.
And what’s the deal with complaining that the different D-pads usually do the same thing? I can think of at least 5 games where they do different things; should the right d-pad do nothing at all in games that don’t need that many buttons? How has this become such a common talking point when badmouthing the VB? It’s just part of the bandwagon I guess.
You did really well, considering the condition of that Jack Bros!
Sooo the Flashboy you got is a dumper/flasher for Game Boy games, but “Flashboy” or “Flashboy+” is also the name of a flashable cartridge for Virtual Boy, which is the topic of this sub-forum. So you might not get many responses or help with your issue, since we don’t know about that specific device.
Someone might be able to help, but in case nobody does, just know that we’re not trying to be rude. 🙂
And a handheld is a great place to try that, since otherwise you’d have to modify the controller AND the head unit, creating a head unit and controller that only work with each other and no other hardware. In a handheld, they’re permanently married anyway.
I got that too, twice. So, sorry everyone, looks like there isn’t someone named aanna who is waiting for you for a special reason.
It can run off of 2 Li-Ions. There are some details from smart people (not me) in this thread I posted ages ago:
In short, the VB will still run until around 5V, but that’s bad for the batteries. If you cut it off sooner than that, then you have to decide if the low-battery indicator is worth keeping. It’s a very interesting discussion, and it’s something that’s definitely doable with some tinkering.
Wow. It would be awesome to have one of those, but I don’t have Ten Large to drop on it.
I think the core sentiment is good.
If a PVB member already has a cart programmer, what’s the absolute minimum, breakeven price they could charge for a VB repro with any given ROM on it? If you take that number, add a couple bucks that would go to the original dev (where applicable) and even a couple bucks for the trouble of flashing and mailing the carts, would that total be able to undercut the absurd prices we see on ebay? If so, I think it’s worth setting up that avenue. Making it somehow identifiable as a PlanetVB product might be a neat bonus, but no need to make anyone think they’re somehow better than any other repro.
Then just find someone willing to do it, since orders would spike.
Those look perfect, if you’re sure the stock VB one is 10k. Just make sure you test it to make sure it’s facing the right way, before putting the VB back together.
Headphone jacks can be tricky, because of the functionality of silencing the speaker when they’re plugged in. So it depends on how the VB one works and how the GG one works. In a fully mechanical one, there are 5 solder points: one ground, L&R audio in, L&R audio out to the speakers. Plugging the headphones in interrupts the audio lines to the speakers and keeps it for the headphones. But the Game Boy one had 4, GND/L/R and a toggle switch that connected to GND when the speakers were plugged in, to tell the GB to mute the speaker. So instead of breaking 2 connections, it completed 1, so the jack itself has to match the functionality of the machine. I haven’t looked into how VB or GG handle it, so you’ll have to research both before you buy anything.
I don’t know what to call it “officially” or whatever, but I had to buy some of these wheels to replace the wheel on my Game Boy a while back. You can find it by searching for “10k potentiometer” plus “duplex” or “5 pin” or “dual” then checking the pictures to make sure it’s what you want.
Or actually, I have a bunch of spares if you want me to send you a few, for just the cost of shipping. I only needed one but ordered a pack of 10, and I haven’t touched them for years lol.
I’ve never had an issue swapping displays to another unit, or even left to right. They’re all the same.
I bet it’s salvageable. I’ve rescued some pretty bad jobs.
Heh, we’re not exactly going to tell you “no, you shouldn’t get it, VB isn’t that great”
VB is awesome and you should get one.
If you plug in the controller and turn it on while it’s open like that, do you see a red LED come on anywhere inside the “guts” of the VB?
