this is so technical that its far above my own head but your efforts are not unappreciated!
that is wildly creative and cool. I have a ROB and a VB, and they even set only feet apart from each other, but i never thought of combining the two. Amazing work.
Been playing this. what an achievement! I was stuck on areas 4-6, but now i figured it out and progressed to area 7. This is a very cool concept and works well—genuinely good content! Well done!
For those who might need a little “hint”, no spoilers, but the basic idea is that you need to finish each room to progress to higher numbers (doors wont open until you’ve finished lower levels). The map doesnt “check things off” but the game is clearly keeping track of what you’ve already finished.
Adore this VB community and keeping this underrated system lively!

So cool to see this. I cant wait to download and try it on my flashboy!!!
Just commenting here to bump this article i came across by Benj Edwards, member of Retronauts and a good game historian.
Ok, next update. I played GAMEHERO, the “guitar hero” “clone” for VB. WOW! I mean, its comically low end in one way–the tunes are often approximations rather than some sort of “spot on” 8bit cover, and the visual presentation makes your eyes feel like they are going crossed (the way one spite is in one eye, and the 2nd sprite in the other eye) but it WORKS, and once you figure out how to play (i.e. the shoulder buttons as R and L) the game takes off. And it turns out to be a super cool homebrew effort!
I may have spent the most time playing this one of any homebrew so far. The very fact of unlockable content (additional songs)… i was coming back again and again. Some of the songs are funny to hear, others wow me with their excellence, and others are great gag/winks to the player (Wont spoil them here).
Loved it. What a cool idea and neat inclusion of so many tracks. Well done, devs. Really love it.
my VB (purchased via ebay years ago, so i dont know the original owner or geographical region) has an SN of
VN104933150
as marked on the underside of the console.
Probably going to continue to use this thread (of mine) to record my comments/thoughts on the homebrews hosted here.
Just tried out Fishbone. Wow’d again. Im just very impressed by the level of proficiency and slick presentation you people are able to eek out of this system. I actually found myself slightly addicted to Super Fish World, trying (unsuccessfully) to reach 100 score. I made it that high on one of the games, but wanted to do it on all 4. Maybe another day. In any case, i love this process of trying your imaginations and designs. Were i a programmer, i’d throw my hat in the ring. I guess instead i’ll sit it out and enjoy your genius. Thanks!
Just played Deathchase and I gotta say, this is a technical achievement. Got to level 7 before wiping out entirely–there seemed to be some glitches as I began the race (the trees were showing up with error graphic lines or something, but it was running so fast i couldnt see much before I died). But just imagining what this took to design and code—nice work.
Regarding the comment above, “You are very lucky to have a Flashboy, it seems to be impossible to find one anymore…”
I had mine made just 2 months ago–i think they are still available (flashboy +).
Welcome to the new user! im fairly new myself but an avid devote of the VB.
update: So i played and finished it tonight. Anyone who plans on playing this should refer to page 1 for padding instructions (if you plan to play on a flashboy) and SKIP page 2 if you dont want spoilers.
HOWEVER, i was about to give up after getting almost to the end–and page 2 had a critical piece of information on how to see the ending. So, spoiler, or hint, your decision.
I really liked it. A mysterious vibe, and i caught onto the joke aspects pretty quickly, and though i wont pretend to understand it (even the dadaist ending/meaning/etc) i liked the flavor of the whole thing. It was short enough to play and finish quickly, and it works well. And the graphics are great, especially the void area with the ameoba thing!
Great contribution to the VB homebrew library imho.
thats my guess too. Looks like rental instructions. Ive even heard podcasters talk about working at blockbuster, etc where they themselves ended up keeping the materials (box, manual) when the stores rolled out subs like this to save on loss and wear/tear.
EDIT: on second thought, it seems too technical and professional for a video store knockoff. Seems like maybe some kind of instructions for a demo kiosk or trade show, maybe?
got this up and running using the padding instructions on page 1 of this thread; looking forward to trying it on real VB hardware later tonight. FWIW, this game is competing with Dark Souls (on switch) for my attention. hope that says something for my love of VB. Thanks!
these are some stunning images. Never having played Last Story, i’d still be interested.
Thanks for the recommendation—I’ll try it. However, I’ve never had this problem before with the other (non-homebrew) games I’ve played. This VB has been put through its paces for a good while, but never before with indie software!
Hey, i’m not going to let a few moments of nausea or dizziness detract from classic gaming!!! ;’]
As a new Flashboy Plus owner, just adding this info here to help other newbies that come behind me.
I couldn’t get the “64” version of the Padder to work, so i used the one at the following link.
https://www.planetvb.com/modules/tech/index.php?sec=tools&pid=pad_vb
You take the VB rom file and drag and drop it into the PAD_VB.EXE program—-Again, just pick up the ROM file and HOVER it over the EXE program, drop it, and it will copy and paste a “PAD” version of the ROM file into your folder (adds “pad” to the file name).
This is the one you need to flash onto the Flashboy Plus.
You may need to put the padding program into the folder with the ROM to get it to work. If its working, when you drop the ROM into the Padding EXE, you will see a black screen flash, then it just closes…but the file with the “PAD” extension now works. This is the file you will load into flashboy+ cartridge.
Found some help at this link: https://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=5792&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&type=&mode=0&start=10
Just open the loader (Flashboy EXE), select your (padded) ROM, drill down to the folder where the padded rom lives……. and click the “FLASH” button.
Finally, when using the Flashboy EXE program to flash the ROM….YOU NEED TO CHECK THE BOX NEXT TO THE NAME OF THE GAME YOU WANT TO FLASH. This will make the FLASH button light up, and away you go!
