Ugh. That question is not as silly as it seems but actually on one level with the hen/egg problem. 😉

Actually, the chicken/egg mystery may have been solved!

I’d say you’re the definition of a troll, even if you’re doing it unintentionally.

From Wikipedia: “In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.”

There’s no problem discussing the Virtual Boy, as long as what you’re saying makes sense. Let me dissect your post and point out to you what’s wrong with it. Observe:

Have you encountered any in real life?
I havent but what would I do if I did?

This is a perfectly acceptable post, disregarding the grammar and punctuation mistakes, of course. It’s on-topic and raises a valid point about people that trash the VB even if they haven’t played it. You should have stopped talking, because it’s all downhill from here.

what if I had my Virtual Boy out and they wanted to destroy it? (like one dream I had)

Yes, because I’m sure any reasonable person would just randomly come up to you and tell you they want to destroy your Virtual Boy. I’m sorry, but just because you have bizarre, irrational fears about your VB getting destroyed doesn’t mean we want to hear about it or respond to it. And who cares what you see in your dreams? I can’t even believe I have to say this but since you can’t seem to grasp this concept I’ll spell it out: Dreams are not real and have no impact on reality. But even if you ended your post at this point it wouldn’t be all that bad, until you add:

what would I do if they did smash/pulverize/throw/punch/smack and/or impair my VB? 😯

Here it becomes obvious you are trolling, because you say the same thing again, but you make it sound even more asinine by adding specific nonsensical ways that these fictional people will destroy your Virtual Boy. And the reason you’re being a troll is because you actually ask us to answer such a stupid question that has several obvious answers. Maybe you should stick with common sense on this one in the [nearly-impossible] event that this actually happens, and file a police report for property damage. Or maybe don’t walk around in public with your Virtual Boy in the first place, as if there would ever be a plausible scenario where you are walking in public with your VB and someone destroys it. There are a million reasons why this question is stupid and not worth answering. I can’t believe I’ve even spent this much time writing this response, I’m just ignoring my own advice by feeding the troll.

I just want to know for those just in case times where I may randomly bring and probably mention my VB somewhere for some reason 😀

Ignoring the obvious bad sentence structure and wrong use of the verb “mention” here, your overuse of emoticons just drives home the fact that this post is a troll, and/or you are probably less than 12 years old.

OK, I emailed them and it seems I was right. Here is their response:

“They actually fit the outside screws perfect. The inside screws are a tight fit and may rub on the casing”

I’m not sure if that means it is still possible to open the VB or not without grinding the bit.

Did you order that bit then? I’m still hesitant to order one of the bits online because I’ve heard:
A) They are bad quality and easily break/strip
B) They don’t fit in the VB, even though it says in the description that it will

If you have actually received the bit and you can verify that it works I will order one ASAP, otherwise I’m still looking for a solution.

Wow, don’t be such a douche, undead. I seriously doubt your cartridge would go down in value because of this ROM.

Don’t feed the troll, people.

The first one (red) is a clamp-on base. But supposedly it isn’t as sturdy as the other two I linked.

Does yours have a metal or plastic clamp at the base? The one I linked above has a plastic clamp, I believe, and I’m worried it wouldn’t be strong enough. I also found this and this which both seem to be sturdier, but more expensive. I wish I could just pick up the first one but I’m afraid it will fall over while trying to hold the VB. What do you think?

Do you think something like this would be good enough? It’s cheap, so I don’t know well it would hold up the VB. And I can’t find any large pictures of the part where the lamp connects, so I don’t know if I would be able to remove the lamp and connect the VB connector. Thoughts?

Awesome! How did you actually connect the VB to the arm though? Can the VB adjust at the end of the arm or can it only be used from that position? And do you have a link to the arm you used?

How do I obtain a screw driver that is capable of taking apart the VB? Is there stock product somewhere that will work or is it necessary to modify something?

I run the VB off of the official AC adapter only. However, when I had the VB set up at my computer desk I never noticed this issue, and then when I moved the VB to a different room and played it on the floor (and plugged into a different outlet), that’s when I started noticing it. But like I said, there were a few weeks in between so I suppose anything could have happened. The outlet that it’s plugged into now is actually an extension cord with some phone chargers also plugged in, so maybe there is a noise problem in the cord or the VB is causing erratic current draw or something. When I get home I’ll try it straight from the outlet and see if the problem goes away.

I will try your suggestion of playing from different angles and see if it gets better or worse. Again, it doesn’t always do this. It seems like when I first turn the system on it is fine, and then after a few minutes (5ish) it may or may not start to get the flickering brightness problem. And it’s more obvious in some games than others – games like Red Alarm make it very hard to tell there is anything wrong, because there is so much black in that game.

And like I said, I have never seen any artifacts or lines that shouldn’t be there, and the depth works perfectly.

You’re just infatuated

…so is that why I wanted to dress up as a Virtual Boy (or would I be a Virtual Girl in my case)?

So is THAT why I’m hesitant to play it? 😛

Makes sense, since when I was about 4-7 years old I used to say that I wanted to marry a computer 😀

This is your dumbest and most nonsensical post yet. Congratulations!

For the love of God, stop calling it “Virty”!!!!!! I don’t care if you’re a girl and 12 years old or whatever. It’s not “cutesy” or funny it’s just annoying, and it belittles and demasculates something all of us on this forum love. Just stop. /end rant

That’s an incredibly good deal for projectors. I’ve checked craigslist and even the cheap old XGA projectors are going for hundreds, unless they are damaged/broken or don’t include bulbs.

So then the only content you view in 3d has to go through the PC? Could you watch movies with that setup? I have heard about the iz3d drivers but I don’t have much experience with them. Can you do any 2D-3D conversions of movies? I imagine most movies wouldn’t translate very well but some have potential.

Do you mind only having a resolution of 1024×768? I thought about buying a projector but I’m not crazy about hooking up my ps3/360 to such a low resolution for gaming.

Also, I looked into the VR920 and from the reviews I’ve read about it, they’re not very good. The manufacturer claims for those video glasses are ridiculous. They always claim something like “It looks like an 80″ big screen from 6 feet away.” But if you have tried them in real life, you know that it actually looks no bigger than a 19″ computer monitor that’s 3 feet in front of you. Plus there is no light blocking on the sides or bottom/top of the glasses so you have to wear them in the dark to get any kind of immersion effect. They would definitely be fun to play with but I have convinced myself that I would be disappointed with them.

Nice. How hard were the projectors to set up? I’m assuming you’re using 2x DLP’s then? What resolution? Does that require two graphic cards for video output or do you somehow daisy chain the signal? What kind of software/hardware do you use to split the image? I actually looked into doing that myself, but I didn’t like that a silver screen is required to reflect the polarized light, and everything seemed very finicky and hard to install, not to mention expensive. But I imagine it’s worth it in the end, right?

I’m pretty new here too. I’ve found everyone here to be very helpful. It’s a great community!

It’s almost certainly going to be real stereo 3D using a parallax barrier. There’s also some kind of rumored “3D Control Stick” which sounds a little different than “analog stick.” Check it out:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/nintendo-3ds-to-come-with-3d-control-stick-vibration-and-sha/

They already said the 3DS will be glasses-free technology. My guess is they do something with a parallax barrier.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax_barrier

I’m not sure I’m going to like this. 3D is best when there is some kind of immersion factor. The VB provided this because of the binocular + eye shade approach. Virtual reality gaming usually involves wearing an immersive headset. Even home 3D gaming can be played on a large screen TV. The 3DS may have stereoscopic 3D capabilites, but playing on such a small unit will make it very gimmicky. It reminds me of looking at a holographic/reflective sticker – you get the 3D effect but it’s only a novelty.

I could be wrong though, perhaps Nintendo will provide very cool gaming twists using the 3rd dimension. It just won’t be the same as the Virtual Boy to me. Either way, I’m excited to try it out and see what it has to offer.
